Word or even Notepad should work fine. Either of those will make it easier to drop the text into what's been compiled thus far. If you need the most recent versions of the backgrounds you plan to base them on, I'm happy to post here/send them to you.

Also, status update - 70 odd rooms and a new mapscreen in progress. This things is most definatly taking shape.

Heh, that sounds promising enough  8). We need to experiment with how it's going to be presented, but I think it would be a good idea to have some room's text done in preparation. Plus it would give us something to muck about with when we do the tests.

Alrighty. Take a room like Scid's, for example. What information would be necessary for those who have never seen the place in game or no little nothing about it? Characters most associated with it? Significant events? Changes over time?

Dribs and drabs. Nothing as great in number as the Golden Age back in 2003-4, but RI has kept the show going in that time, and there've been a few releases of note, most prominently the finished Edge of Reality.

Right now, as a result of this new exposure, the general consensus is to sort out the problems that caused the influx of new games to die off, ie reorganising the game and character database, bringing up the background/sprite quality, making the series more accessable for new folks to get up to speed on important stuff, things of that ilk.

Exciting stuff, most definatly.

Right now, I'm 45 odd rooms into the primer. Speaking as a fan, it's very satisfying to see all the backgrounds from various games all assembled into one coherent whole.

Having said that, I don't think there are any objections to other folks trying their hand at a text based intro, for example continuing A Brief History of Reality (although it would be kosher to seek Creed Malay's permission first, since he started it).

BTW, Einoo, interested in lending a hand with anything you've seen so far? I'm pretty sure as a RON alumni you'd bring a lot of awesomesauce to the proceedings.

Yes, I had this problem when I started the primer. I take it you're using the newer version of AGS, 3.0 or above?

There's a few ways around this. You can either use an older version of AGS, or wait a bit for a new template to be done using the latest version. Either RI or myself would be happy to throw one together for ye. :D

Firstly, hi there and welcome to the RON project! In response to your observation, yes, that whole 'plot forum' thing referred to our old forums back when RON was hosted on the Underdogs. It's a little dated now, as plots/graphics/games/projects/everything else are now blended together on one subforum. Still, you've posted in the right place, so don't worry there.

With regards to your plot idea, I think in recent years the admins and makers have been slightly weary about giving characters from established properties major prominence in RON games, due to the whole copyright debacle. And considering that the Leisure Suit Larry franchise is still a current property that's being used, I would advise against using him for fear of the rightsholders sending C&D's your way. However, there's nothing stopping you from making your own washed-up-former-playboy character and turning him loose in the town, since there aren't any characters of that nature created for the project already. It depends on how much of the unalterable gameplay/plot hinges on the main character being Larry specifically.

Anyway, I'm sure there'll be others weighing in with their thoughts, so let me just wish you luck with your project, and I look forward to seeing what ye come up with. :D

Good lawd, now there's a name I've seen about!

'Sup Einoo, welcome back to the endeavour. How've ye been?

I've recently replayed Root, and (although I'm only second guessing RI here), I think the problem is using backgrounds from other locations in different places - for example, using Albert Waeks Second Hand Bookstore interior as the interior for the First Bank. In this case, would there be anything stopping you from actually using the bookstore (and Albert as opposed to the Thakbor's Mother sprite) as a location as opposed to the bank?

You'd have to ask RI for specific instances, but I think that's the issue here. There may also be other niggling continuity issues, I'll give it another playthrough tonight and make some notes. It's nothing particular major, and certainly nothing that a few tweaks and swaparound of backgrounds won't fix.
#154
This here map right here is the most up to date map of the town so far. I can also send you how much I've assembled of the primer so far if you want to see how all the backgrounds go together in pratice, if that will help.

You're so bad at Zork you got eaten by a Grue. In BROAD DAYLIGHT.

Yeah, this surprised me too. RI has the whole story since he pointed it out when we were brainstorming the new system, but I think it's due to the location of some of the backgrounds, apparently they're in the wrong places in relation to each other. No fault of yours, it's just symptomatic of just how bloody difficult it is as it stands right now to research where everything goes if a large number of locations are used, particularly in the downtown area. The primer I'm working on will go some way to helping out with this. Speaking personally I would like for Root to be in the standalone catagory, since it's a pretty kosher game.

Don't worry, there's noting 'controversial' about Root, and that particular subsection shouldn't by any stretch be considered a 'sin bin'. Hell, the only thing stopping Au Naturel being on the Canon list is the fact that Davy is alive in a timeframe he should have been dead in, and we all remember the hooha around THAT particular game.

Yes. We require forms filled out in triplicate using a number two pencil, with double spacing, referencing and a bibliography of your favourite shapes of fruit. Upon submission they will be scrutinised, shredded and rolled into delicious hemp cigarettes to prevent I and the admins from losing what has affectionatly been termed 'the crazy'.

but seriously, planning permission? Hell no. Don't think you need anyone's say so to come up with new stuff or edit what's already here. The idea of having a 'core committee' to control the output of games was one that was almost universally shouted down as it goes against the whole spirit of this little endeavour. So don't think you can't add/modify anything out of fear for treading on someone else's toes. Having said that, if you have an idea and want some feedback from the boards, then you're more than welcome to post it.

With regards to the map and new locations, I would follow the same rules as coming up with a character - try to do stuff that's new and couldn't already be used elsewhere. For example, there isn't a comic book/game shop in the town yet, so if you wanted to do that then go for it. On the other hand, there's already a private detective agency (Max Griff's, in the town square office building), so it dilute the range of locations if another was to be created.
#158
Awesome. I recommend taking a crack at a couple of the most used ones - Davy Jones, Max Griff, Mika etc. If we can get a few of these with a good solid walk/talk cycle, then we'll have a template which we can use for getting the others done in doublequicktime.
