Dream Theater are underrated? Okay now you've gone on the other end.

You are partly right, "some" people know DT, but maybe that's a regional difference. Here in Germany, nobody knows them except progressive metal fans like me. ;) They are NEVER played on any kind of radio station and I bet that not even 1% of people here know their name.

He just builds his playing on random hits in fast tempo, and makes it sound cool, yes, but in those slow songs they have, and when he needs to do plain rythm, he's not very good.

That's probably a matter of taste. I personally think that he does not hit random notes at high speed and I think that he's a great drummer for slow songs as well. Take any slow song by DT as example.

Very interesting. Some suggestions though (I take it you can't do anything in the simple demo yet except to take the manual and leave the room and walk into the floor):

- Make the first room brighter. I couldn't really make out some things.
- The character movement was still a bit strange, but maybe that will look better with proper walking animations. Right now he didn't seem to turn properly yet and he became faster and faster the FURTHER he was away from the camera, which looks really strange as it should be the other way around!
- Of course, most of us would need a translation to play the game, too.

Nice gui, but is there anyway you can access your inventory? I'll definately keep an eye on this, keep it up. I wish I could help, but I'm afraid I don't have the time nor the proper skills...

EDIT: Oh, and take two ingame screenshots (showing both rooms preferably) and post them here!

Haha, good idea, xenogia. Actually I just hit the keyboard randomly because I couldn't think of a good name... :)

People have constantly insulted Dream Theater members ("Mark Portnoy sucks, he tries to copy too much from other drummers" or "The singer from DT sucks, he can't sing." is something I hear every day at other music forums).

I think that they are great and probably one of the most technically skilled bands around nowadays. None of them suck, they are all great at what they do...

I myself, being a guitarplayer, learned a lot from them (John Petrucci mostly) and think that they are the most underrated band ever.

I don't think there's a special plugin or module for this, but if you know how do that for one player, then you could just check for the keys for the second player and handle the keypresses the same way you did for the first one. I don't quite understand where the problem is, I'm afraid... :P

Hehe, yes I knew about Eric's page, but I could've sworn it was down several hours ago. Anyways, here's the latest version (which I am quite happy with) and a second character which doesn't look good enough yet. What could I do about him?

Final Version with new character in same style...

6x zoomed...

Keep the constructive critique coming please!

Hey, that looks great, ProgZ. Thank you very much, I think the more simplistic shading style fits quite well. I am currently trying to learn from your paintover and adapt it to my sprite similarly!
#1628
Hmm... I just can't seem to find any tutorials on shading sprites. Almost 80% of the tutorials in the sticky here are broken or not relevant. Can you or anybody else post the direct link to one or more of the tutorials that helped you the most?
#1629
Yeah, you're right. I don't like the face and the shirt shading either... I'll try to modify it somehow.

EDIT:
Allright, I won't have time to update his position (because that would probably require to start all over with the sprite) but somebody might do this in a paintover maybe? I will change the outline colors to be a little lighter and I want to change the shading on the face and the shirt, but I am not sure how to do it properly. I mean, I know how to draw respectively to a lightsource and everything, but how can I define depth?

EDIT 2:

Here is Version 2. Is it any better? I'm not sure myself. I desperately need good shading advice. Should I use more shading colors maybe?

Version 2

24x58, 13 colors + background and 6x zoomed...

Once again I tried to improve my sprite-skills. Took me 10 minutes to get the following character view done. I know this is not enough time to make something real good, but I wonder what I could improve!

Here is the sprite:

25x62, 12 colors + background and 6x zoomed...

So, please give me feedback, suggestions or even paintovers to show me what I could make better with this character. Thanks!

Then you could go fake all the way and just check if the player is standing underneath a ledge (with regions etc.) and - if he does - you play an animation of the player jumping up and grabbing the ledge. If the player then presses up, you show an animation of him moving up onto the new platform.
#1632
So couldn't you just add a force to your player character that will move him upwards (y--) and gets less and less and then release the character to the gravity to pull him downwards? Those things always take quite an amount of fiddling around...
#1633
That's actually very heavy scripting wise (I mean it's really hard to implement). For normal jumps you can have a simple animation playing most of the time, but if you want real jumps, you will need to add gravity. Move your player down every frame if he doesn't stand on a platform (do collision checks to find out if he does or not) and if you want him to jump, just give him an upward force.

If you don't have a clue what I was just rying to say, then you should probably look into something easier first.

Tinkerer

Spoiler

Well, I guess it's just practice. I can't make out a special trick for it. Hang on one of the ledges and only press up or down if you need to and save & load often. It's possible, really!

Then you'll need to add one more to the bottom (inbetween the closing bracket for the rep_ex function and the last one that you posted here).

But that will only work if the rep_ex really ONLY consists of what you posted here! So, I take it that it says "function rep_ex ( ) {" right ABOVE what you just posted and that there is one closing "}" right AFTER what you posted, right?

If it still doesn't work, then please post the code WITH the "function rep_ex ( )" line and all that comes until the next function opens!
#1637
You have 1 closing bracket too much (or many?). Get rid of one of those three that are written after each other, that should help if I'm not completly blind.
#1638
Well, you could use a variable after all. Just call it "int skip_rep_ex" and set it to 1 if you want to skip the rep_ex function and to 0 if you want to run it. Then add this to your actual rep_ex function:

Code: ags

if ( skip_rep_ex == 0 )
// only if we don't want to skip the rep_ex function
{
   // do your stuff now...
}

That's atleast one way that would work.
#1639
What you did should be correct, just add a ";" to your line like this:

Code: ags

// script for Hotspot 2 (load): Any click on hotspot
RestoreGameDialog(); // <- ; is important

This should do the trick!

You can not make a multiplayer game with AGS without the TCP/IP-plugin, but this one doesn't work most of the time and never a game was made with it.
