The question is not whether AGS can do it or not (it can), the question is whether you can do it. Do you feel comfortable enough with AGS coding yet? Then go ahead. You should look into the sine and cosine functions to simulate ball movement, the rest is pretty simple maths.

I'd help but when I download your wave file, it's really quiet and I only hear noise, no footsteps at all. Maybe it's because of teh evil 6,66 seconds length? ;D

Oh and this is prpbably not the right place to pust something like this as long as you don't want any comments or critique on it.
#1804
That didn't happen. ;) Anyways, I changed it.

TUNE CONTEST
19 Oct - 27 Oct

Concerning last contest...

I didn't yet have a chance to express my thankfulness for picking me as winner for the last contest, and since I have too much time this was the first contest I ever won, I thought I should write a short comment. So here we go:

Nikolas: "So, the winner is..."
He opens the envelope.
Nikolas: "...HKD!"
The crowd stays quiet, everyone looks confused.
Nikolas: "I don't think there's any member in this community that is named 'hkd'."
A guy in a black suit rushes on the stage and whispers something into Nikolas' ear.
Then he disappears again.
Nikolas: "Ah, let me turn around that envelope."
Nikolas: "It's... DKH!"
Everybody cheers...
I come up to the stage and receive the medal from Niklas.
Me: "Thank you so much. I love you, I love you all!"
I fake a tear, turn around and start walking offstage.
Then I fall over a banana peel on the ground and let the medal fall and break.

Concerning NEW contest...

Allright, now that we're done with that, I am ready to throw the new topic at you: Write a piece of music, that expresses a climax. This could be the music for the climax of an action movie or the climax for a porn scene. If you think that porn is immature, you are most likely a virgin and you should stick to the first suggestion ( the action movie ) or make up a new topic with a climax in it.

So let me summarize:

- Write a song.
- Any styles, genres, formats or instruments are fine.
- Keep in mind that the primary criteria when judging will be how good you express that climax.
- The deathline is the 27 Oct - this year.
- What are you waiting for?

What's with the grotesque blackness at the bottom? I get that the sides are bushes, but nothing in nature is perfectly straight like whatever that ungodly abomination in the middle is!

I guess that's for the gui, [lgm]. ;D

Good work, I wish I could draw this good with my tablet. You could try to use a little more dramatic lighting ( à  la loominous ;) ) and some more details maybe, as said before. Apart from that it's cool.

But what is this noise all over the picture? Since this is a png I believe it's in the pic itself and not some kind of artefact!? It looks like you used the Photoshop noise filter on the whole image?

EDIT: Darth was quicker...

I have thought about this idea a long time, before posting here. I know there are too much competitions going on anyway and that there has just been a new competition suggestion, but I realized, that there are several competitions for artists (backgrounds, sprites, comics), for musicians and even for story/dialog-writers, but not a single one for the ones here that are into coding.

So my idea is to have a competition for coders. A good example for a task, could be to write a particle engine with AGS... The entries would be AGS games, but should only show off the desired effect of course. They would be judged on how good they look, how fast they run (for example how many different particles it can render without slowdown) and how close they come to the desired effect.

The winner of a round could post a new idea, just like most competitions here already work.

If anybody here has any better ideas or suggestions on how to do a coder-competition, then share your opinion please.

You have so many great looking sprites, it'd be a shame to have to go with only one.
If I'd be you, I would make her change her appearance several times in the game. That would make her a more believable character and it would show off all those great sprites. You could even go as far as having the way she looks dependent on the situation she is in. Do you have a scene where she has to act mature and grown-up? Then let her hair and the rest of her body seem more mature (like in prog's edit). Or does she seem immature, childish and young in a scene? Then let her wear that hat, that makes her look younger.

Dkh, as much as I question your song's qualities in the lullaby-division, it's nevertheless quite cool to listen at Smiley

Dkh: I like your work. I will allow it to enter. It is weird in every way. And, although not a lullaby, it could be night music for a monster baby when having a nightmare. So I'll take it as an entry. Cheers...

Thanks to both of you. It really wasn't meant to be an entry, but now since you say it's fine, I guess, it's fine, hehe.

Awesome!! Finally I got my model importer...

It crashed when I tried my own file, though.

I am not sure if my entry is valid, since you can hardly call this a lullaby... but it's wierd big time... ;D

Anyways, I would've done better with the porn theme, I guess.

HERE it is, tremble.

Thanks for your answers, DanClarke and esper.

This is the new version:

Original Size

Scaled x4

Is this any better? I fixed his shoulder and changed his head/neck a little.

Thank you ProgZmax and King_Nipper!

I hope I improved myself this time: ;)

Original Size

Scaled x4

I made the outlines darker and therefore stronger (which works good I think), I made him cut his hair ;), and removed the wrong shading on his pants.

Any further advice? I am still not happy about his head/neck region...

Critics' Lounge / C&C: Character Sprite
Fri 07/10/2005 00:20:51
Hey there,

after staying away from the Critics Lounge for a rather long time, I decided to improve my sprite drawing skills (once again ;)).

So I drew this guy in roughly 10 minutes:

Original size

Scaled x4

I know that I should work longer on a sprite like this than 10 minutes in order to make it look better, but I just don't know how? How should I spend more time on it? How could I improve it?
#1816
Allright, allright... ;) I see, it needs lots of work.

Anyways, I did it in 2 days and it's all coded in a horrible kind-of-way ( one single .cpp file with 5k lines ).

I'll consider redoing it with a better foundation.

Of course, I would add more bonus ( again, what's the damn plural? ;D ), but this was just going to be a beta. I like the shooting bonus ( and I've already implemented exactly this one in the PONG clone I once wrote in AGS ), so I'll see what I can do.

Funny enough, InCreator was right, the only textures I used, that are from a coding tutorial are the ball and ground texture... ;D

Thanks for your time, though.

He used the Novodex physics SDK, so yes, you are right.

Anyways, you actually managed to use Novodex with this? Awesome!!! This just keeps getting better and better. Unbelievable, really. Now only model support ( .obj, .3ds or.x or something) and it's perfect!

Thanks for your comment, Vince.

You are right in all your points. Still, let me try to explain: I didn't exactly think of the power-ups as usual power-ups. Those boxes are designed to be picked up randomly. Let me use an example: The player is not supposed to think: "Hey, there goes a "increase cam rotation"-bonus in my direction, I should try and pick it up". He won't think this way because he knows this bonus isn't going to help (especially in singleplayer against the computer), instead he is supposed to pick the bonus up while trying to get the ball, so it happens more like an accident: "Holy crap, I just picked up that bonus - what the hell is happening?"...
Now you could go even further and say, those power-ups are (again especially in singleplayer mode) negative power-ups. The player should try to stay away from them.
The only exception is the "stop camera rotation" bonus. This one (if used properly/picked up shortly before camera is behind your paddle) will actually improve your situation quite a lot.

Now to the movement system: You are right, it is very confusing. But experience shows to me and other people that played the game before I released it here, that after playing for a longer time, it will eventually be learned by the player and automated. I don't know how long you've been playing the game already. It is probably not the best idea to make the player go through this amount of time to learn the movement, but I couldn't think of any other way making the paddles move...

So, in conclusion, you are right. Those are all pretty lame excuses ;D... Anyways, this game is meant for quick "party" fun and was done in two days. It also was my first ever released OpenGL application... ;)

Thanks though for spending your time!

Hello,

I just finished working on just another PONG clone. What about a PONG clone, you say? Everybody wrote a PONG clone... But this one is special: It is in 3D. That's right, programmed in C++ and OpenGL, it combines the feeling of the good old PONG with the new possibilities of the third f*cking dimension. It features... ehm... two paddles... and... a ball. No seriously, there are only three different bonus ( what the hell is the plural of bonus? bonii? I always wonder about that... ) available at the moment, but those are fun and something completely different than your average increase paddle size/add ball kind of bonus - for example one will increase the speed of the camera rotating around the scene, so that playing is becoming really hard and challenging.

Did you really read all this text above? Anyways, here are three screenshots - but keep in mind, they don't show the feeling of this game at all. The actual look is quite terrible, but play it and I'm sure most of you will find it quite addicting ( atleast most of my friends did, when we tried out the multiplayer-mode:

EDIT: I am sorry, you'll have to visit each link and click on "free" everytime in order to watch the screens and download the game...

And - finally... The legendary... ehm... main menu...

DON'T JUDGE THIS GAME BY IT'S LOOK! Actually, don't ever judge a game by it's look...

I am aware of some bugs ( both the paddles and the arena aren't displayed correctly ) but it is completely playable as it is. It features a tournament with three levels and three different enemies ( easy, average, difficult ) as well as a multiplayer-mode for two people on one keyboard.

For more information please check out the readme-file.

It is a beta and the reason I post this here is to get feedback, so please let me know what you think about it and what you would tweak/improve/change.

Thanks and here is the link...

Yeah, I'm completely with Guybrush Peepwood here.

I remember the chainsaw from Maniac Mansion. It never had a purpose for all I know, but it sure excited me as a kid.
