General Discussion / Re: iPhones
Mon 20/07/2009 14:50:37
One thing that pissed and still pisses me off as a (hobby) developer is that I considered buying an iphone in order to use it and simultaneously get into mobile game development but guess what: you can only develop for the iphone on a MAC. I know Microsoft often does the same (ie. not open-sourcing their stuff and not making SDKs available on other OSs) but Apple has the image of being 'better' than that and also they went to court often against Microsoft in order to make them change their ways. So, while Microsoft is somewhat of an evil big company that only care for money, Apple is not better in the least. At all. They just never got the chance to be as evil as Microsoft is.

Also, the Apple store is ridiculous. They reserve the right to allow what can be sold and what not and will use to enforce their political views on people. For example, they first told the team behind the politically critical TV show South Park that they could develop an app for the iphone that would allow people to watch episodes for free anywhere they are (basically a portable version of southparkstudios.com) but when the money was spent and the app was ready, they suddenly disallowed the sale of the program because they political content didn't sit well with them apparently.

That was awesome!! ;D

Especially loved the reverse coming-out-of-water scene!

Heh, that's a really old term. 'Auwiese' would be the singular of the noun. 'Au-' is a prefix to 'Wiese' meaning it's a 'Wiese' close to water, I think, in any case, you can probably disregard that prefix and regard 'Auwiesen' just as 'Wiesen' (and translate that with 'meadow' I guess).

Hope that helps.

AAND that was it, thanks, you were a great help!! :o

Just set the about:config flag from 2 to 0 and it's all back to good now!!

Thanks again. ;D

Sorry, running Firefox 3.5 which should be a stable release.

Two days ago I started noticing that some images on this forum here seemed to have turned pink. Take a look:

It doesn't appear on all images though, most are displayed correctly. I thought it was a new theme or whatever and didn't worry about it. Then I saw it was also there on two or three images on another, unrelated and non-forum page.

I then took screenshots and checked in Paint to see whether it was just my monitor messing up - but no, the rgb sliders say that the pink color tint is really there.

It's only Firefox (Internet Explorer for example still renders this forum fine) and it's not just one image type (.png, .jpg, .gif or similar) - does anybody have ANY idea what could cause this? Any help is greatly appreciated!

EDIT: Oh, and if I right-click an affected image and hit "view image" it shows that image in isolation, in pink.

Yea, let's stop with the phonetic/phonology talk, it's not exactly my favorite chapter either... :)

jetxl, the problem is that language is really quite arbitrary at the level of letters (these are called graphemes in linguistics), at the level of phonemes you can actually recognize a lot of progresses and changes that work in a very mathematical, logical and predictable fashion.

Anyways, one thing I'm curious about, when you say the word 'advertisement', what syllable do you stress, ADvertisement (I'd always do this) or adVERtisemet (heard people do it), is this an AmE vs. BrE thing? Also, issue, do you pronounce the 's' as in the word 'sure' (basically ishyou) or as in 'scent' (isyou)? Again I'd never even consider saying the second but I've heard it, even in American TV, I think.

Edit 2:
Dkh, in your current edit, you're way off.

EDIT: Yeah, sense - sence would be different. The quality of the final sound (the 's') is different, sense would be /s/ and sence /tz/ (can't use proper IPA symbols here unfortunately) basically, I guess.
sense would be /z/ and sence, whatever that word means, /s/.

Of course, sense would be /z/, typo there. Sence isn't a word, if it were I would actually pronounce it with a /tz/ I think but I'm not a native speaker.

EDIT: Actually, now that I think about it, you're probably right about sence too, let's not talk about non-existing words though... :)

Double negation is completely accepted in African-American Vernacular English. :p

Every frame store the current mouse position in two global integer variables (call them old_mouse_x and old_mouse_y for example). Then also every frame subtract the current position of the mouse (mouse.x, mouse.y) from those old values from last frame. This will get you the vector (2d) that the mouse has traveled in between both frames. Half the length (for example) of that vector and position the mouse there.

Any flaw in that logic? Haven't tried it.

Phonemes (sounds) are not bound to letters. 'Eye' and 'I' for example are spelled differently but if you record the sounds when pronouncing or transcribing it using the IPA both are identical (/ai/). So, to answer your question, no, there is no difference in pronunciation between none of your examples (at least in AmE, can't speak for BrE).

EDIT: Yeah, sense - sence would be different. The quality of the final sound (the 's') is different, sense would be /s/ and sence /tz/ (can't use proper IPA symbols here unfortunately) basically, I guess.

I'm very certain that you can use 'realize' in both contexts in English just as well as in German... as in:

(1) ...and only then I realized I wasn't wearing any pants.
(2) ...a project I wanted to realize for years but never got around to.

Yep. "Party at your place tonight?" could be contracted to "Party at yours tonight?".

Cheers guys, and thanks for all the flowers. :)

BTW, for anybody still waiting for the AGS raycaster pseudo-3d plugin and Troopers (and FOY :)) - they are still in the works!! :)

PNGs shouldn't be big, really. It doesn't matter anyways because when you import them into AGS it actually turns them into another format that is internal to AGS. So you can use any format as long as it works with AGS the way you want it - the resulting game will always be equally big.

General Discussion / Re: About new computers
Sun 07/06/2009 12:39:23
First of all, can't help you with temperatures (never been an issue for me, thanks cold Germany) - although I don't believe it's gonna be such a problem, with my new computer I don't notice it being any warmer etc. When it comes to monitors, it probably depends on technology (ie. LED, plasma etc).

For me, a modern computer/gaming system is mostly defined by four properties: processor, graphics card, RAM and - yes - monitor.

Processor: don't be fooled, a 2.5 GHz Quad core is NOT better than a 3.16 Ghz Dual core, hardly any games use four cores (Crysis being one that does, IIRC) and speed is more important than four cores. The Intel Core i7 920 has four 3.5GHz cores for example, that's top of the line of course.

Graphics card: I'm an NVidia fan and I can only help you with these cards, go for the GTX series, GTX260, 285, 295 etc. are all amazing new cards with enough power for even the newest titles.

RAM: Don't go for less than 4GB, I personally chose 4 and then room for later upgrades. This also means that only an OS running at 64-bit will be able to use all that RAM, so if you go with Windows, you're optimal options would be XP 64-bit (rare and hard to get, only English version available IIRC), Vista 64-bit or the new Windows 7 64-bit. Educate yourself on the 64-bit technology a bit. I use Vista 64-bit and it's not half as bad problematic as most people make it to be. It even plays Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 without emulation, which is over 10 years old and definitely not written for 64-bit processors. 32-bit applications will run in emulation mode and will be a little bit slower but I have yet to notice that because anything that old will always run so incredibly fast anyways.

Monitor: A lot of people underestimate the simple power of the monitor. They spend upwards of 1000€/$ on a kickass computer and then play games with a 17". I have an Acer 24" widescreen and it's wonderful. Makes playing games SOO much more believable, it's really incredible, I would never go back. Even 24" are not that expensive anymore (got mine a while ago new for less than 250€). I'd say 22" or 24" would be my recommendation. Also makes using big programs easier, Photoshop, etc. Heck, even coding with AGS is nicer with lots of space.

Power usage (and electric bill) will depend on your power adapter of course, I have a 400W one for a dual core and GTX260. You should find out what you use right now. This new technology does need a little bit more power, of course, you should ask the shop where you buy it whether that's enough.

I remember that Windows Media Player would always set the MIDI out volume to 0 when you played a MIDI with it, if AGS would do it, it should be considered a glitch and be fixed.

Opera users are like the Mac people of browsers or something. Jesus, can't you guys let one thread about Firefox be without interrupting and being all high-and-mighty about how your browser is so much better... Sorry if that sounds mean but it's really the way I feel.

Arjon, I think you're set pretty much. Mouse gestures are a thing a lot of people like, haven't tried it myself though. I also added the net video hunter and skip screen ones, thanks.

Have you checked your mixer settings? Easiest way to check it out is double-clicking the speaker symbol in the lower-right corner in the taskbar, there should be a slider for MIDI. Is that turned down or muted maybe?
