Well, the engineers also switch to science, and they both switch into kinesiology, commerce, health science, and social science. Humanities (my faculty) just gets the most.

Argh! That's so incredibly familiar!

However, I can't place it. If you could post a section of verse, I might be able to, but that bridgey bit has too many different voices to pick anything out.

Slackers usually don't make it through engineering or computer science...

That's because they all come to the dark side the Arts and Humanities. Come, slack with us and know the joys of slackage!

(Hey, I'm only half joking. About 25% of Engineers and 10% of Science students at my school can't handle the stress, so they switch faculties after first year and become Humanities students)

Candle, you didn't even call her a he. That remark was directed at me. :D

I was debating putting (s)he, but decided not to. Considering the number of times I've been called "he" and even "Mr. DragonRose," I should know better. Sorry.

If you want a spell check (i.e. to check that each word is spelled correctly), use a spell checker. It is more efficient than a human.

If you want someone to EDIT it (i.e. to make sure that it makes sense logically and grammatically, as well as checking the spelling), use the proper word.

As for editing... well, while I was typing this out, MoodyBlues already posted. I'm going to post this anyway, because it explains some of what he did, and looks a few things he missed.

1. What is supposed to be happening? This is completely out of context, so it's a bit hard to figure it out.

2. You should have dialogue 3 (your goodbye dialogue) at the end.

3. What is that bit at the begining? Does it have any relation to the rest?

4. When using commas, there is a space afterwards but none before.

5. In dialogue 2 "It does get lonely up here sometimes.?" doesn't need a question mark. It's a statement, so use a period. And only use one kind of sentence ending punctuation mark at a time. (??? or !!!  are common ways of showing emphasis, though not gramatically correct)

6. Several responses seem to have no connection to the
questions.

7. Sentences begin with capitalization. Therefore, every new line of dialogue should begin with capitalization.

8. Furthermore, don't capitalize in the middle of a sentence, unless it is a proper noun (such as a name, a city or a title).

9. "I went through great depth" doesn't make any sense. "I went through a great deal of trouble" "I went through a lot," etc. make more sense.

10. Contractions have apostrophes. So "Thats" should be "That's."

11. On the flipside, plural words don't have apostrophes. So "apple's" should be "apples."

12. An elipsis (a bunch of periods meaning someone has trailed off) should only have three periods.

13. Don't use the same word twice in a sentence. For example, with "A good apple would be good," you could change one of the "goods" to "nice."

A discription- not a picture, thank god!- of Tub girl is on that page. As well as a lot of other discriptions of nasty sites you will never ever want to go to.

Actually, Mssrs Collosal and Naranjas, the earth IS rounder. The circumphrence of the earth around the equator is greater than the circumphrence around the poles. It IS slightly more equal now, though we obviously still have mountains, valleys, gorges, foothills, and other terrain.

I  give you proof!

1. The theory that dinosaurs evolved into birds for years. This is not news. I remember learning about it when I was in grade one.

2. Tyrannosaurus Rex doesn't mean "King of Tyrans." It means that it is the greatest (King) of the Tyrannosauridae (Tyrant lizards, so called because they were predator dinosaurs, with much larger teeth than other dinosaurs)

3. Continental shift has always been happening. It never stopped.  This is what earthquakes, and therfore tsunamis, are.

4. The earth is NOT completely round, even with the tsunami. It is more round, yes, but it's not a ball.

Mr. Fisherman, however, is correct. The earth's rotation has sped up. Days are now 2.68 microseconds shorter! Oh noes! I must get a new watch.

I took a shot at painting over the little girl. It was mostly just some minor changes.

Mine is left, yours is right.

First, I lowered the ears a smidgen. This gives her a higher forehead- most little kids seem to have big heads, and this is part of why.

Next, I raised her waist line by a couple of pixels. Kids have short torsos. I also straightened out the torso a bit. The curves were making her look more like an early adolescent than a child.

Last, I shortened and puffed out her sleeves, but that was just a personal preference. Every dress I had as a little girl had short, puffy sleeves, so it just seems right to me.

General Discussion / Re: see any films lately?
Sun 30/01/2005 19:35:07
The last movie I saw was Zepherelli's Romeo and Juliet. Last movie I saw in a theatre was The Incredibles.

But I honestly can't tell you which film I've seen was the "best." The Princess Bride is my favourite movie of all time- it's one of the first movies I can even remember seeing. However, the production values are bad to terrible- the music sounds like midi, except for the occasional bit of guitar, the sword fighting is terrible, and everything looks blatantly artificial.  But I still love it.

The best for production would have to be Citizen Kane. There's only one shot in the whole thing that Isn't gorgeous- a cockatoo suddenly appears in the middle of the shot, screams, and disapears.  But the acting, the music, the costumes, the sets- everything else is great.

Worst movie I've ever seen is Battleship Potempkin. Ten minutes of action stretched out over an hour, useless shots stacked upon useless shots, and though the story is very historically significant, it's told in the most boring manner possible. Bleah.

They are there, but I made this thread right after we had that huge downtime and a bunch of stuff was culled. I was worried that they might end up getting eaten by a file demon (you know, those sneaky creatures that destroy the file you want when you need it the most) so I asked about hosting them somewhere else.

You are now up to date on this magnificent saga!

That is your whole arguement?

You knew some twins [and indentical is just a word to describe them, they aren't completely the same 100%] and one became gay.

I also knew some twins, one was gay and liked lacross, the other was straight and liked soccer... Man they must not have been very identical at all. I mean, they should like the exact same thing and talk the exact same way and like the exact same foods, since they're identical...

bah, you get my point, at least I hope so

Huh? I think you missed BT's point. He was saying that homosexuality isn't a genetic traight because it doesn't show up in identical twins.  The "lying" part I read as sarcasm.

Favourite ever- that would be hard to answer. So oftern the interface only works because it fits in with the rest of the game. The Sierra GUI wouldn't fit in with Maniac Mansion, for example. There's too many variations in MM for a simple "USE" icon to work.

However, I can tell you what I've hated- single click interfaces, such as in KQ7, Torins Passage, GK2 and the Myst games. If I want to look at the lever- which, to me, would seem like a good idea- I don't want to pull it instead.

As a caveat to that, I did like the interface in The 7th Guest, if you'll consider that an adventure. As you moved the single cursor around the room, it changed to show you what it would do. A beckoning finger meant that the you would go to a new screen, an eye meant you would look at something, a book meant you would read, etc.

If you let me know somehow what will basically happen when I click my mouse, I'm happy.

2] It might look pretty, but it isn't professional.

8] If I recall your arguement correctly, you could just call it a block buster. A cult hit means that there is a tiny but rabid following.   The idea of having an unusual film that grabbed main stream attention would seem to fit in with your arguement.

Sorry if I ran a bit rough-shod. I end up doing a LOT of proof reading for formal essays, (which is about all that I get to write any more  :() so I tend to try and force most non-fiction into formal rules.

The worst I can imagine is examiners finding it and assuming plagerism, but I have all my development notes and my English teacher has seen enough of it to know it's my work.

Never EVER assume that. That sort of thinking can get you expelled. I am in no way joking. I know more than one person who has had to go to hearings because they miscited something or were simply unaware that someone else had had similar ideas and had published before them. They have even talked to the teachers before submitting their work, but they didn't show proper documentation.

Anyway, on to your paper.

1) In your first paragraph, you continuously mention "they." Who are "they?" Where have they said it? Just "the critics" is not enough. Give some names, give publications. If you feel that this is just a general observation, find other people who have said the same thing and use their opinions to back your own up. Citations make you look clever, and keep you from getting your butt kicked over technicalities.

2) What the heck is up with your title? Making words bold doesn't excuse you from using the space bar. If you were submitting this to any reputable publication, they would take one look at that and never even read the rest of the article.

3) Second paragraph, you make a bracketed interjection about the latest Affleck vehicle driving off a cliff. Though it's rather clever, it breaks up the sentence, making it hard to follow.

4) Your comments about The Cohen brothers are completely unsupported. You just say "they're getting less original" and leave it at that. Are they being derivative of other films? Are they copying what they've done before?

5)
QuoteSubsequently, in a neat series of copycats, recent action movies are full of ‘bullet time', a phrase coined by the unabashed Wachowski brothers.
This really doesn't make sense. You make it sound as if they should be ashamed for coming up with bullet time.

6)Oceans 12 is released.

7) You sometimes cite years for films, sometimes don't. Pick one.

8) Pirates of the Carribean isn't a "cult classic." It's entirely mainstream. Rocky Horror Picture Show, Plan 9 from Outer Space and UHF are cult classics.

9)
QuoteThe Big Movie of '99 was probably American Pie
Was it or wasn't it? Make a stand.

10)
QuoteIt seems, at a glance, that what the critics proclaim is right, and Hollywood truly is the antithesis of creative vision.
This is wordy and convoluted. Simply saying "It seems, at a glance, that the critics are right, and Hollywood truly is the anitithesis of creative vision."

11) If you're aiming for a broadsheet audience, you're aiming for a grade 6 reading level. Antithesis is a big word.  Try "opposite" or something similar.

12)
QuoteIn fact, are they anything new at all?
Ah! Grammar! Subject verb agreement is your friend!

13)
QuoteThe same is true for Spiderman, revisiting the superhero movie scene, and it's no surprise to suddenly see Hulk, The Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Batman, and Catwoman sidling onto the silver screen. Did I mention there's a sequel? There's a sequel.
You mention six films here. Which one has the sequel, or do they have one sequel amongst all of them?

14) In the end, you seem to be making an article for countercultural films. It comes from nowhere. I'd advise using examples of what underground films have done that is so original, and contrasting it to the pastiche of modern Hollywood movies.

In all honesety, this seems to be more of a 'zine based article, rather than a broadsheet. You use informal, almost colloquial language.  You put yourself into the article occasionally, something you'd need a proper byline to get away with in a broadsheet, unless the whole thing was about your own experiences, which it isn't. Also, bashing the current cultural mainstream is best done from a countercultural base.  Broadsheets, even liberal ones, like the status quo.

BB: Well, it really depends on where your cop is from. The police in Ontario wear Kevlar vests as part of their regular uniform- even traffic cops and the guy that comes around to schools to say "Don't do drugs!" wear bullet-proof vests.  Cops from Las Vegas wear brown, and New York cops wear uniforms like Erwin has drawn.

Or so TV has told me. It might have been lying.

As for the actual picture, the tie doesn't seem to be following the line of his stomach. I tried a bit of a paint over. It's crap, because I wasn't really trying that hard.

Basically what I did was move the tie over quite a bit, so that it's more in line with the way the feet and head are facing. I also changed the curve of it, trying to make it sit on top of his belly, rather than being a part of it. Whether or not I succeeded is your decision.
