What is MAGS?
MAGS is a monthly competition for all amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to use AGS to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner.

For more information please visit the Official MAGS website.

Why should I enter MAGS?
We're not here to tell you that you should enter MAGS, but merely allow it as a creative opportunity to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and generally as a good kick-start for the new comers (a.k.a n00bies).

MAGS is the perfect opportunity to make a game, and the wonderful prize is to announce the next month's rules, and all competitors get the game placed on the MAGS website.

MAGS is meant to be fun and is aimed at everyone, despite their skill. If you have poor art skills work on graphics, and vice-versa, as the voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, you may get help for the competiton, but should try not get anyone else to do any part of the game for you.

You are not allowed to (re)use material already created before this competition, you game must be completely new! An exception goes for sounds and music where you can also use free material that is available to the public.

Please do not just enter the competition with a rushed entry (a game created in just some hours or a few days)!

Topic: End Times Christmas Stories:

This month's guidelines were set by last month's winner Abstauber:

_________________

Tell your favourite christmas story in a post-apocalyptic scenario.
You are free whether to choose an existing story (e.g. Space Scrooge) or come up with something with your own.
Your end-time scenario can be a waterworld, a nuclear desert or the last remains of a space colony. It can also differ from these proposals, but it must be clear that a disaster has changed the word order completely and it must be a common end-time scenario.

All games till the 28th.

Thread Rules:

1)  Comments are allowed at all times but should be hidden before and while the voting.

2)  Partecipators are allowed to patch their games even while the voting but I should be informed via pm or here, and only IF the game has a serious bug that makes it crash. Due to the inability of keeping track of versions of the games, I've settled to this.

So you can patch your game, if it crashes or if it can't be completed.

Have fun this month too!!

This image, is barely photoshopped, and has nothing to do with the HHGTG. I'd love some thoughts on it, and yes the rock is supposed to be weird.

I'm wondering does anyone know who has the copyrights of HHGTG Text Adventure Computer Game? Infocom had the rights till 2004 or 3 or 01 then they lost them, and hell, I 've yet to been able to find a proper license saying "We have the rights"

Topic: Breaking In:

This month's guidelines were set by last month's winner Babar:

There must be a concerted effort, by a team of people, to break into some reasonably major obstacle.
So it could be breaking into a bank, or a prison, etc., but try not to go for something as simple as "Being locked out of my own car".

Also, not necessary, but try having the player character be switched from one person to another during the course of the gameplay.

For extra awesomeness points: BEARDS
...And that is all.

Okay, now this is the weirdest thing ever, but due to Blue's there's a song, I heard just once, pretty recent (8 years max), so info.

1.It's a band
2.The song was playing on Christian Dior perfume Ad
3. The video of the song, had the band and the lead singer (woman long hair at the time),on a white studio, with blue instruments (transparent).
4. The interview I saw after the video, had the lead singer saying she used to play drums and she got 64 on drum class (what a bunch of useless crap can a man remember).

Any ideas?

Topic: Steampunk!

This month's guidelines were set by last month's winner Helme:

Your game must take place on somewhere in the past. Steampunk means, that some sort of technology was invented, that changes the timeline.

The inventions mast have a certain importence for the game, but they don't need to be the center.
Most steampunk stories take place in the victorian age, but you are free to choose between stone age and 100 years ago.

Okay, so since I'm working on the thumb revision, yes the tool that is used for hitchhiking, so any bloody ideas on how to visualize a two button hitchhiking device? (Not sure if this goes here)

The thumb is an electronic device that allows hitchhiking on nearby ships. It has two buttons, one called Hitchhike and one called Engineer (Green and Red coloured)

I'm thinking something like this:

I want something that sort of obligates this movement:

or this one:

Any ideas?

What happened to this?! I just came through it by pure accident..
That explains who MrColossal got his custom title (and AGA)..but perhaps he did travel in time.

Well, on HHGTG, there's the ability to drop your inventory items and the limit to carry a certain number of them (I have two dif modes, so it's quite flexible), thing is when you drop an item , the item due to my decision to have realism in the size is rather small. For example a toothbrush appears to have 8x2 dimensions in 320x200 bg. But I'm feeling it might end up as a pixel hunt, and I don't want this to happen. So, any ideas on how to fix this?

I'm thinking like adding a GUI that will show up an arrow with the name over an item. Something flashy. Or even have the image of the item in zoom view(like Loom) when over it, so you can pick it up easier.

I've composed the current soundtrack, on which I'd love your opinions.

Apart from the village I found a little boring, I'm satisfied with most of them.
They are in wave form due because I've yet to compress them.

It's in parts due to size limitations from uploaders:

Soundtrack:

Battletheme

Village

Bossfight

Intro

Credits

Outdoor

Castle theme

The soundtrack is about a fantasy based RPG/Adv sort of game:

Battletheme: A chiptune that will be looped for battles
Bossbtheme: A tune played on the final battle (loop)
Castletheme: A tune looping inside a castle
Intro: A song written for an atmospheric intro
Credits: Guess
Outdoor: A song looping outside the village
Village: A looping song inside the village(that's the worst one and I'd love some ideas on how to work on a song that's supposed to be heard inside a village, you know the folk elements and all)

I need critic on the whole soundtrack. As in how does it feel, is it too boring?

What do you do, when you lose that feeling that tickles you when you start working on a game?

What do you do, when all the fun seems to be lost in your project?

What happens when you keep improving your game but it never reaches good enough for you?

I'm drawing a complete blank here. From one point, I don't want to have this work lay to waste (mostly for people working on their parts), but secondly, I feel like I 'll never be able to release it, and it will end up as a huge joke..

EDIT: It takes one thought to charge up again!(Back on track)

Well, here have this(you can set any possible interface and combinations of them with this module).

Abstract:
You can set BASS,

SCUMM

or Sierra interface

to your game, fast and easy with this module. You can even have combinations of those three. Example: Have BASS interface and Sierra like GUI.

I'm composing the music on a game, and I'm wondering you guys that have composed music before how do you send your music files? Do you compress them into a certain format(mp3, ogg) and send them? Do you allow authors to compress them as they like? What's really the best thing to do in order not to have a ginormous music vox file but still maintain music quality?

Topic: Only One

This month's guidelines were set by last month's winner Tijne:

There is only one rule for this month:
-There must exist -something- in your game that is 'The Only One' of its kind.

It can be an object, a species, or anything else you come up with, so long as it's "one of a kind".
The game should (but doesn't have to) revolve around this 'one of a kind' thing (or find it useful in multiple ways).
There may be several different "one of a kind" things.

Have fun! ^_^

Topic: Episode 1

This month's guidelines were set by last month's winner Gudforby:

Telltale have had a great success with episodic adventures. Now it's your turn to create the first episode for your own new adventure serie!

You are pretty much free in the forming of your first episode. The game might be the first part of a continous story or a serie of separate episodes. You might base your serie around a main character, or an enviroment, introducing new characters and plots in each episode.

The only thing you must do is that in the end of your episode, you have to tease for your next episode, to show your further thought on your "serie". This can be archieved by ending with a cliffhanger or a short "preview" or "trailer". You might even have a better idea yourself? It's all up to you!

Good luck!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All votes can be cast in the next 72 hours from the edit time stamp (till the 30th)

Winner:

Tijne with his game, the Colourless Sylph!!
Congrats you have the honour to choose the next month's guidelines..

Comments:

I found the idea really really cool, and for the first time its something really new and exciting, wish I could really enter!! Have fun lucky ones you! :D

As for comments, there has been a trouble last month about posting comments during the voting, since according to some it affects the voting. I feel it somehow does, but I also feel it weird to have one's mouth shut until the voting. I really can't decide. Perhaps its better for people to post their games after the MAGS, so people can comment on them. That's the most viable solution here.
