Advanced Technical Forum / Mode7 - (Solved)
Sun 05/06/2011 19:03:07
I use an object graphic cause I felt it's the best way. I'm trying to replicate a mode7 effect similar to the one in final fantasy 3 in SNES at the intro. With the difference that it will be playable by keyboard (you know moving ahead).

How the code works:
-It gets the viewport of the scrolling background and sets it into a dynamic sprite. Then cuts that sprite in 12 pieces (sections). Resizes pieces accordingly by an individual rate for width and height(ratew and rateh) pastes the pieces together on a dynamic sprite and sets that sprite onto an object.

Bulbapuck has passed me the torch, and well, I think it'd be nice if we could decide a date. Before Mittens. I'm thinking Mid July.

INFORMATION ABOUT OROW

The OROW competition is a very simple competition were you make a game that is one room big in just one week. This competition has in the past proven what the members of this community are capable of, and it will be interesting to see what comes of this.
(Some of this post is copy-pasted from another thread.)

Rules:
-Entries must have only one playable room/location
   -Entries must be adventure games
-Entries may use content from any source, including pre-made.
-Entries may have cut scenes, menus or limited controlled sequences outside the main room.
-Entries will be submitted anonymously, more on that below.

Anonymous submission
An important aspect in this competition is the anonymity. This means that you cannot share any information about your entry. Nor can your game contain your name. This is because the game should be voted on by it's own merits.

You submit the game by sending me a link via PM. I will then upload it to another site. (Probably ShutUpload)

The winner will be decided by public vote once the competition ends. There will be 5 categories: graphics, music/sound, scripting, writing/concept, puzzles. Each category will be scored out of 5. Voters will be expected to have played, and to vote on, at least half of all games entered. However, of course, playing them all is preferable.

This competition will start on DATE REQUIRED. You should not start making your game until then. Even if you think you have no chance of winning, you're encouraged to enter - it's as much a forum activity as a contest.

Absolutely no information about your game should be shared with anyone until the competition and voting has ended. Please reply to this post if you intend to take part, but don't give any idea of what your game will be about.

Best of luck, and have fun.

This is killing me, I listened to this song again, after like 1 year, and still back then I didn't know whose song is it.

Does anyone know a song that says "everything seems to be ..." at the chorus, ends with a sax/trumpet playing over one verse and a chorus, it has an acoustic guitar, and sung by a female singer(most likely) and the chords are something like D A(fast one strum then chord change) B and B A(fast strum) D?

I can record a bit of how i remember the song to go, seeing if that helps anyone. The song is mostly folk-like but I could easily say it reminds me of MGMT's style 9though not instrumentally wise). Please help an old man find the name of this song, and you'll be blessed with eternal greatness and love.

I apologize if the creation of this topic is stupid, but the files were extra new, and I wonder if anyone's actually got em yet. I hate to admit I've got no access to them. So I'd like to ask if anyone actually has the source and the exe of the AGS Irc Ceremony, and if he/she'd be kind enough to re-upload and/or send the files.

http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=1408

Again, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place. It's kind of AGS related, that's why I placed it here. I created a topic so that it would be more brought into attention and bumbping the other topic would mislead people ecc.

AGS Awards 2010 *LIVE* CEREMONY

What is a live ceremony?
As an annual event, the AGS awards winners are revealed via a ceremony that so far has taken place on the IRC Channel. However the awesomeness of SSH's rendition of the ceremony, after it was concluded has led into this. A live ceremony is a ceremony where YOU control yourself.

How does it work?
Firstly thanks to Wyz's code (designed for this purpose mostly) we now can have the most awesome thing ever imagined. Or second close. Regardless everyone will be assigned of a person in the crowd. Now announcers when given the ability to announce will be ported on stage. The AGS executable offers automatic connection to the AGS ceremony channel, and only requires you to declare your nickname on start. It keeps log of everything individually.

Who's behind this?
Wyz, Dualnames, JimReed, m0ds, bicilotti and most importantly YOU.

It's not hard to use or to comprehend, it's designed for people that can't use the irc or don't want to download a client, or just want to make this MORE AWESOME THAN EVER.

Okay, I know this doesn't go exactly here, but I've had talks with bicilotti and thanks to Wyz's awesome source code and help, I've managed to put together a workable code.

What's needed:

As for now just contribute character templates then. And any opera/stage backgrounds. USE PM FUNCTION.

#87
This is probably an easy one, or my head thinks so. I'm stuck and this is rather important to me.

Declaration
Code: ags
String slota[5];

I have this array of five strings, that I want to fill with "A","B","C","D","E" in random order but without a string having the same letter. So that when i read the array I get
each of the five letters but in any order.

I hope I'm making any sense.

General Discussion / Movie Related Question
Thu 30/12/2010 01:58:34
A) I need an answer to this question badly
B) I'm aware its pointless as f^&* and perhaps annoying as well
C) I'm aware there's a chance I won't get an answer or an answer I'm happy with.

This goes mostly to people that have seen lots of movies.

If my favorite movies are:
Brazil, 12 Monkeys, Donnie Darko, Lost in Translation, Legend of 1900

What movie should get me an equal psychological impact to those movies?

I find the feeling from these movies as overwhelming nostalgia with a bit of sadness.
#90
Simple as that. Just include a picture of the album if possible, as song if you like with a youtube link, and please a reason why you like it so much.
And here's my part:

Neil Young - After the Gold Rush

Well, cause it's a very sad record, and probably his best imho. The songs are great, there are no filler songs in my opinion. If you're into folk or Neil Young, you should get this album now!

Most of you are probably aware of this, but I feel the need to even so show this to those that are unaware.

http://experimentalgameplay.com/

Experimental Gameplay, has a theme per month, and regardless of game engine it asks people to make games in 7 days based on that theme. I've played many games unaware they were runner-ups and winners of this competition. I think Braid and World of Goo were entries. But not sure.

Anyhow check it out. ;)

General Discussion / Rotoscope
Mon 06/12/2010 03:39:46
I'm planning on rotoscoping a bit. I know its a hassle, but it's an experiment I'd like to do just for fun purposes. I recall seeing/finding a CD or whatever that was a collection of videos of people walking on different moods and occasions. Like pregnant women and stuff. If anyone knows that that would be neat to trace. Also if anyone's done it, I'd like some tips and pointers.

I'm probably going to use either after effects and photoshop. Any links supplied to cool walkcycles would be neat!

EDIT: The thread may be a little in the silly/pointless fashion, but well, I have to increase my post count or my brain will freeze. Or yours.  ;)

WHAT?
Make a GAME in an HOUR, with a THEME. Any game, as long as you're using AGS and you stay away from DRUGS

WHEN?
ON Saturday 27/11/2010. 14:00 GMT. If you can't, contact me and submit an early entry!

WHERE?
In this THREAD

WHORE?
Please CAMWHORE or BLOG.

WEBSPACE?
TerranRich's SHUTUPLOAD.
or MEDIAFIRE

WHY?

Because after this HOURGAME, YOUR LIFE WILL ACQUIRE MEANING.
YOUR FRIENDS WILL BE FRIENDS.
THE GLOBAL ECONOMIC CRISIS WILL BE NO MORE.
A CURE FOR CANCER WILL BE FOUND.
KIDS IN AFRICA WILL BE FEEDED
THE CHANGE OBAMA PROMISED WILL FINALLY OCCUR.

The theme will be set by the previous winner (that's me!) and announced here at the beginning of the hour. You will have an hour to make the game, plus 15 minutes to debug and upload it. Making a game from scratch is strongly encouraged, but you can use a pre-made template and music from one of the hoursong competitions. I can make a game too but it won't be voted on. I can make trophies though. Please don't use one of those upload sites with 30 second waiting periods and crazy popups. ShutUpLoad works, so just use it, unless you have your own hosting.

If you are busy on Saturday and want to have an "early submission", post here!

THEME: Pick a feeling

Okay, you need to pick a feeling and make a game out of it. Example pick happiness and make the most happy game ever. Pick depression and make the most sad game ever. Yeah, the theme is kind of dumb I know, but hopefully it will inspire you to make games.

Critics' Lounge / Interface
Thu 28/10/2010 12:26:56
I know it's placeholder graphics, but please let me know if such interface would be okay for a game, and let me know what annoyed you more/bugged you more. There are in-game instructions on how the interface works.

Okay outlining something is fairly possible. Constantly outlining something that changes size and position is what really makes me wonder. I've tried this a lot, but well, I can't accomplish the effect in the way i want it. Perhaps a plugin could do this better, is my guess. Also faster.

Well, I want a black outline on all characters in the screen that will be always around them. I also want that outline to scale. So more like a dynamic outline. Well, that's all. I've tried lots of things but drawing on the surface doesn't have the effect required. Really, I'm stuck.  :'(

I managed to somehow accomplish the effect with a gui and surfaces but it was slow. Slow as hell. And my coding is messy with drawing surfaces and all.

The problem is the exact same that Journey Down had. Great art - looking bad when scaled. Perhaps using Khris module (with bilinear and stuff) would be the better approach instead of outline?

Critics' Lounge / Perspective Issues (AGAIN)
Thu 21/10/2010 16:26:40
A. I'm not much into perspective yet, so a nice edit would be like GREATER than telling me what to do, cause well I can't do it.

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q53/JustLedZep/hospitalreception2.png

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q53/JustLedZep/hospitalreception5.png

I'm trying a 2-point perspective, which was good so far, but damn that counter (reception counter), just is killing me.

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q53/JustLedZep/hospitalreception1.png

All I need is a reception counter but no matter the approach i failed. So if one can draw one for me, it'd be great. Minor thingie, I'm not trying to do a square but rather something like this: http://www.biz2bizonline.com/tiffany/images/napolireception.jpg

It may be square but it has those thingies on the sides. Anyhow its a phycho-ward and well I need a counter.

So if I'm being too demanding and shit. I'm just a learner by visual reference. And well if one would make me a counter I'd learn as well. but asking me or teaching me won't work. At least not without visual reference on this image.

I know I'm on the verge of breaking the critics lounger rules. I want critic, just not the "you can't do 2 point perspective" hassle

EDIT:

Pretty much what the title says. Suggest a great movie. And perhaps incline a reason. Btw, no f$^&$* spoilersplease.

So there goes mine:
-The Holy Mountain (1973)

Cause nothing will disturb you more in any way. If that film can't, well congrats you're a pathetic bastard.

General Discussion / China loves me
Sun 19/09/2010 16:57:24
I know some will object to the stupidity of the topic in question, so I apologize.
I just never had that.

Okay, first I have a nice firewall and a nice antivirus. Secondly I was attacked on common internet space. Specifically my gmail account.

That's the IP
123.148.2.132

There's nothing missing or any damage done, but I did change my password to prevent it from happening. Is there a certain measure I should be taking?

This is out of my field, so if I sound like SSH (AKA a total n00b) please tell me. ;)

Completed Game Announcements / Loricum
Wed 08/09/2010 11:39:51
THIS ISN'T MY GAME, SO DON'T CREDIT ME OR SHOOT ME. Also usually authors announce their games, but not if I find them first.

Now, that's through, I've been checking Adventure Gamers yesterday and I saw this. It's a very nice AGS game, and I think it deserves to be announced.

Quote
Created by the MED Theatre group, a team of 13-19 year olds from Dartmoor, England, Loricum  is a freeware adventure based on a play about the flooding of a Dartmoor valley to make a reservoir. The project was overseen by the group's artistic director, who with a team of mentors for the development, animation, graphics and film-making elements, helped these teens to realize their ambition of creating a game. The result is a short but sweet adventure with a distinctive art style and an intriguing, very personal storyline with three very different possible conclusions.

Well, here it is:

http://icethin.blogspot.com/

Instead of my usual rants on "Life sucks", I decided to take a different approach and show you the path of ninja let's say me. For now there's the part one for how to make your own rain. And I will finish the tutorial on the following days, even supplying the code. If you want to subscribe I guess now's the time.

Sorry if this insults or angries or irritates or something to anyone. It wasn't my purpose.

This will not at any part reduce the interviews or my thing at the AGS blog.  As I have a new interviewee at the moment. I'm not against the AGS blog,  I'm just offering my small knowledge in things, as a shitty developer.
