I'm glad you got some enjoyment out of it guys, It was definitely a fun game to make, especially doing the speech pack, and not really having to worry about the quality of the graphics/writing/sound/etc.

Well the best example would be "draining" The first time it involved climbing onto a ledge on the inside wall of the yarra river in the middle of melbourne, and then walking through a tunnel about a kilometer long, and popping up out of  a footpath on the other side of melbourne, with onlookers looking at us strangely.  That was a very dreamlike experience, and something I would have just said 'nah' to if I'd been asked before, unless I was really drunk anyway =P

What you're describing comes from what's called "hypnogogic hallucinations" (from the greek meaning "into sleep").
It happens when you're first drifting off to sleep and starting an initial REM period.  You body is fully  paralized (apart from the eyes) during this period, but when you're first entering it, if you're not paralized yet, you can sometimes jolt awake.  I hit my self in the head once when I visualised my bike handle bars falling of my bike while I was riding.  (I laughed out loud when I realised what was happening =) )

If you concentrate when you're falling asleep you can notice the hypnogogics start.  You'll start having really strange thoughts, and a vivid imagination.  This can be used to have a lucid dream, because at this stage you can still have consious control of your thoughts.  If you try and hold on to the thought that you're going to be asleep in a few moments, and will start dreaming, you can become lucid.  (this takes a lot of concentration though, and I'm pretty lousy at it)

QuoteAnyway, the other major reason for me not going on with lucid dreaming is that I like to pay more attention to living in real world.
I actually feel the exact opposite, when I'm really into lucid dreaming, I find that I can see the world in a whole new light.  In a lucid dream, I can look at a tree, and marvel at its complexity; the textures and feel of the bark, etc.  But in normally in waking life it's just another boring tree.
The element of ultra-reality that I enjoy in Lucid dreams, I started to feel in waking life too.  Especially when I'm uber bored, commuting home from uni or something, I'll suddenly have a lucid moment, and everything will seem bright, and new.  I can marvel at the sky or the people driving around, etc.
Another element of 'lucid living' is that I've started to do things that I would only really do in a dream.  I'm usually a pretty restrained kind of guy.  But I've been trying things that are 'out of my comfort zone' more often.  Seeking new experiences.  I think I've also become more creative since I started LDing. I'd never even tried drawing anything untill december 2002, I just didn't think I was creative enough. (But that's probably more to do with the fact that AGS is so cool)

QuoteI've got a book on dreams that basically says; Lucid dreaming is the devil!
A lot of people seem to think that they'll lose normal dreams forever, which I could imagine would piss dream analysts off, but even if you can manage 1 lucid dream every night, There's still an average of at least 5 other dreams a night. Plus you can analyse your own dreams why they're happening:
-"so, mr pink bunny rabbit, what you do symbolise?"
-"I represent your repressed sexual feelings towards your mother."
-"oh."

unless you already have obsessive compulsive tendencies, i doubt you could do it TOO much.  Generally the more the better, but working by a schedule works too.  But The schedule should be something like, every time you "go to the toilet, or eat something" rather than "every hour" because then (hopefully) in your dream, when you eat something, you'll do a reality check.

I always had a hard time having lucid dreams, even when i was in my prime, (ie did reality checks all the time in real life) I only had a good lucid dream about once a week.  It's harder for different people.  The other thing you should know is that it takes most people a month or more to have their first lucid dream, after starting to try and have them.  Some people have them the first night though, so don't be discouraged.

I find I can become lucid lucid once a week still if I start writing down my dreams again, but I can rarely get the motivation to do it for more than a couple of weeks.

Reality checks (RC's) are just so you know if you're dreaming now or not.  Right now you're probably pretty sure you're awake, but when you're asleep you think the same thing, so you should do RC's all the time.  They're hard to remember to do at first though.  RC's are also useful if you think that you're probably dreaming but want to know for sure before you jump out a window or something.

Another thing that's good to do, related to reality checking, is to just imagine what you would do if you suddenlly realised that you were dreaming.  This helps prepare you for when you DO become lucid, and stops you getting to excited and waking up.  (most people wake up really quickly the first few times they become lucid.)

The thing with people who 'don't dream' is that they actually still have all the dreams, they just don't remember them.  If, before you go to bed, you remind your self to remember your dream as soon as you wake up, and write down anything you can remember (even if it's something useless like '...went through a door...') you should be able to start remembering more and more.

yeah, lucid dreams are teh coolest.
I was really in to them for a bout a year, but now I'm to lazy to try having them.  I've still got the Lucid Dreaming guide I wrote up on my site though.

Actually I had a short lucid dream this morning, but it wasn't very exciting. I didnt even fly.  The best ones are when I'm flying around and kickin' ass and freaking out everyone in my dream by telling them they're not real.

The best Lucid dream I've had recently was when I was being stalked by a scary serial killer type guy, full nightmareish stuff, untill I  realised I was dreaming.  So I just picked up a car, and threw it at him, that was pretty funny.  heh heh...  I guess you had to be there. ;)

Join Duzz in this glorified n00bie test game, as he goes on a fantastic journey of tragedy, adventure, and monotomy.
Duzz Quest is a once in a lifetime experience for all the family.
Huzzah for Duzz Quest. Yeah!

Download here. Ã,  (It's 16meg, sorry dialups)
The Speech Pack is ready now too, Get it at my website. It's 14 meg.
Features:
- One and a Half years in the making
- 16bit color
- Sometimes 320x240, sometimes 640x480 resolution.
- 12 characters
- 20 playable rooms
- An INTENSE action sequence
- 540 spoken lines of dialog (coming really soon)
- Original music by The Midnight Express, and Mr. Clean.
- Craptacular in every sense of the word

History/Explanation/Disclaimer:
Duzz Quest began as my AGS test game. I used a picture I had of my back yard, and put it in the program, making Roger walk around. I was all like "Cool! I can walk around my back yard, like those old sierra games I used to love", so I showed my friend Tim, and he was also all like "Cool! You can walk around your back yard, like those old sierra games you used to love", and it was coool.

So then I added some stuff to it, and then some more stuff, and it became DuzzQuest, and it was cool. People said I walked funny in it, but "Bah!" I said. "Humbug!" I said. "That's what they told picasso!" I said.
Still more things I added, and still more things, bits and pieces, odds and ends, one day a room, the next a plot element, sometimes deluding myself that it would be a decent, playable game, other times just experimenting with AGS. I added a lot of things just temporarily, but never did I remove any of them. And the result is a hodgepodge of meandering, aimless plot, nonsensical, gameplay, and schizophrenic graphic resolution.

There's a story (however banal), behind every little thing in DuzzQuest, from Bamptons Rescue Remedy to Tims terrible secret. I doubt anyone but me will understand all the references, but it is MY egotistic adventure after all.

Any bugs, typos or spelling errors you may encounter were left in intentionally to add to the general ambience of unprofessionalism, any lack in speech quality is the fault of stu's 21st party, and any offence taken at lewd verbalisations of the word kumquat rests entirely on the heads of Helen Clark and Katie Ward.

Yeah Toefur, I'd have to say Quest for Glory 1, 2 or 4, everytime I replay one it turns into my favorite, so I'll just say all 3 are the best =)

Sorry I havn't been posting recently, I've been working on DuzzQuest a lot, we've had a lot of beach weather, deep in ocean blues of absinth and all that. =)

Even; I was being sarcastic with that aliens idea (sarcasm really doesn't work on these forums does it :P)  But your north pole idea is really pretty good, that way it could be a sequel to both 'Grr!' and 'Good Santa, Bad Santa'  everyone knows that santa only uses his so called "elves" so no one complains that he's using child labour, and the whole factory at the north pole is surely a tax dodge....

I like your ideas too foz, I'm thinking maybe a person finds the suit in a rubbish bin somewhere, (lightning strikeing in the background) and decides to wear it to a party/go trick-or-treating/whatever. implying that the suit is the source of the evil or whatever.  That would make writing a plot much easier.
#96
yeah, the only reason for him to have to wear the suit is if all his normal clothes are inaccessable, or he has to work somewhere that requires the suit...
...or perhaps because the police know what his face looks like, and he has to hide it.

I don't really want to show Dan's face at all if I can help it, it'd be like when they showed Dr Claw's face on inspector gadget.  That sucked.

The more I think about it, the more i think a sequel wouldn't be worth doing, unless I come up with a grand idea.  I think my time would be better spent on other projects.  For now I'm getting DuzzQuest finished, and we'll see after that =)

wait, i just got an idea: 'aliens attack from the moon, and start frying people with these heat rays thingo's, but Daniel is immune due to his asbestos lined suit, and he alone can save earth...'    it'll need a love intrest, and some kind of plot twist near the end, but I can work on that as I go.

jeez, 5am... and I'm at a 21st the night before... well, If I'm not blind and havn't passed out, I'll be sure to make it :-\

Actually, I'd better give my apologies now, I can't get up at 5am, even when I'm NOT hungover.  :'(
#98
I don't think the sequel should be set in the same place, It'd feel like I was just re-hashing too much.  I liked the other Idea you pm'd me though, I've been thinking along the lines of dan trying to find another job.

The thing is, a sequel would need to be bigger, better, and have an actual story, but keep the same 'feel' as the first. If a sequal is just 'more of the same' I don't think it'd be worth doing.    (at the moment I can't even think of a good reason that dan would have to keep wearing the bear suit :) )

Thanks for the input though, it's very much appreciated. =)

Or just tie a rock to them and make them watch Titanic...

if you're not angry enough to put use the rope with the boss, you'll have to either 'hurt bench', or use the skill tester, at all other times there's better ways of getting angry
