The big question I'd ask here is...if it can be a novel, then what is gained by turning it into a game? What sorts of meaningful interactions will come in game form that enhance the story you want to tell? To what extent will players contribute to the formation / guiding / telling of the story?

Depending on the nature of the interactions you envision, you might consider doing a hybrid like a visual novel. The ren'py engine seems, though I haven't really used it, to be fairly straightforward as far as programming goes, and the graphics are minimal. Ponch may have used it for something before, I think?

Could the decoration be the OM, or the Order of Merit?

Can't wait to get home to see how this art looks animated!

I just need to carve out an hour over the next few days to get something in. I've got something in the works, though!

I think you've got a good start to the composition, and the right sorts of people chiming into help you here. I just want to note that there's a specific problem with the gradients, in case you decide to keep them. It looks as though you've just sort of placed them willy-nilly to provide some color variation, without giving thought to the true properties of light and color. For instance, you have a diagonal gradient across the sky. Is there a situation in which this would ever happen? Additionally, your ocean gets darker as it recedes into the distance, whereas, with this lighting, it would likely get lighter. See here:

Gradients, used properly and tastefully, can be helpful, and I don't personally consider them lazy. But if you use them incorrectly, they stick out like a sore thumb.

But then the part where you've cut the tag is more bothersome than the tag itself! How do you deal with that? (This is an 85% serious question.)

Would you like to include some sort of statement or argument or at least a link to something we can discuss?

In case you missed it, as I originally did, the joke is in what the red shirt says with the letters obscured.

It also includes skeuomorphic design.

Congratulations to Drew. It's technically true to say he wins by default, but I know his piece would have been a strong contender for first place no matter who else had entered.

Your turn, Drew!

Get two screenies in there before Darth gets here! Read the rules for the sub-forum!

OMG that is beautiful, Miez. Shame I already cast my vote!

I never got farther than this with my aborted Darjeeling Limited attempt. Sharing to show how skilled Lasca is, comparatively, in bringing Wes Anderson to the AGS screen:

Concept: Daniel Eakins. Are we allowed to give credit for GUI in this competition too? I love the idea of playing as Obelix and Dogmatix too! Close second goes to Oraxon.
Artistic Execution: Lasca. This is lovely.
Playability: Mad. I want to play this game.

Such amazing work this round though. I can't believe I didn't vote for Selmiak or Gameboy in any category, for instance. And I still want to know what Miez's is from!

I accidentally played the first part of that game as George Kaplan!

This looks beautiful. What program are you using to create your art (I am thinking you may have been using Anime Studio, but I might be confused)?

Quote from: Ali on Thu 20/02/2014 09:12:29I can only conclude that it lacks the (largely) supportive community of Kickstarter.

I was trying to think of AGS games that had used Kickstarter, and somehow, unforgivably, forgot Nelly, even though I was a backer! Sorry!

Less than a week left. Will we see any other challengers?

Welp, I'm giving up on this round. After being beaten to the punch on the 12 Tasks of Asterix, I should probably now scrap my crappy Darjeeling train coach in light of Lasca's amazing view of the Belafonte.

You may want to look realistically at others who have done crowdfunding campaigns in our own community before looking at the 400K+ success stories.

I think part of the readability issue is the fact that the text is all uppercase. We tend to find it easier to read properly cased words.

And yet, the traditional...American at least...way of doing word balloons is all-caps. So you should weigh readability versus cultural norms. You may also want to make sure that, if you stick with all-caps, you don't have any characters named Clint Flicker.
