General Discussion / Re: I have a sugestio
Tue 04/02/2014 22:15:32
It might be incredibly obvious, but an alternate suggestion would be not to get banned. It seems a fairly difficult thing to bring on oneself, though obviously it's possible. I've been here a couple of years now (I think. Sadly, with no completed work yet to show for it.), and I don't think I've even been close, not even in the same city block, to being banned.

Thanks for the information. I may try to see if I have access to Finale in one of the labs at school, just to mess around with it. You get lovely results from it, but I'm not sure if I would. I'm doing a similar sort of thing though, but using the program GuitarPro, writing staff (well, really, writing tablature -- I'm not great at reading/writing music), exporting to MIDI, using SoundFont to change the voices / volume / panning of each track, and then running through a mastering filter or two in Audition. Lots of steps, but the quality improves at each step along the way. Seems like you get better results out of the box with Finale.

I only play a variety of instruments similar to the guitar (bass, ukulele, banjo, etc.), and I think that limits my conceptions when writing music. I don't understand how all of the other instruments work, and so if I try to include them, they're still playing guitar parts.

In any case, I apologize for hijacking your thread, but thanks again!

There's also the option when you import a single png file that has a numbered filename, that says something along the lines of, "This sprite appears to be one of a series. Would you like to import all of them?" I think this is what Construed is talking about.

Construed -- I'd start by checking your filenames and make sure they order correctly in Windows Explorer. Note that "1.png" comes sequentially after "10.png." Your single-digit numbered files should be "01.png," etc.

Thanks Khris and Anian! I'm going to give this a try this afternoon!

Well, I love it. I could see this being the theme to an epic romance. All of the instruments work nicely together. Very professional work. The only problem I see is that I'm now going to lose the tune competition for sure this month.

I'm assuming this is MIDI. What's your method of arrangement / recording / voice choosing / mastering, if you don't mind my asking?

I cannot believe I got third place among the entries here. I am grateful, but honestly think all of my competitors more deserving!

This tune is a slow, dark version of a calypso that serves as the theme to a noir-influenced game which takes place on a boat between Trinidad and Venezuela. Were it faster, you might imagine it being played at the carnival in El Callao. The use of vibrato'd vibraphone is my cheat around trying to achieve a steel drum sound (because the steel drums in the soundfonts I've found aren't great, and I don't have access to real steel drums).

In the interests of full disclosure, I "recorded" a song yesterday that already bears the name of a country (as does the game I'm making it for), fits well with the requirements of this competition, and that I'd love to enter. However, I recorded this song yesterday. YESTERDAY! Just before the competition was announced. Any chance you'd still let me compete?

I've got a computer with an external hard drive shared on the home network via wireless router. Is there a way / what's the easiest way to be able to access files (i.e. stream media) from that hard drive to an iPad that's also connected through the router.

The Rumpus Room / Re: *Guess the Movie Title*

I do believe this is Once Upon a Time in the West, in the scene where Frank walks down the street and picks off hiding gunmen while Harmonica gives him hints from the window. If it's not that, then it's at least reminiscent of that!

Aside from a few bugs, I really enjoyed playing this. We played over dinner while my son sat and watched, enthralled. As I said above, the animation style is similar to some shows he watches -- stuff like Daniel Tiger -- so he loved it.

The puzzles were a bit on the easy side, but the story was enjoyable. Some elements, both puzzle solutions, and parts of the narrative, are telegraphed a little too far in advance. But, for the most part, I'm invested in the tale, the world, and the characters. I want to know more, and am already counting down the days until the next release. The voice work is amazing, as has been noted.

However, I will say that this didn't really have the feel of a class point-and-click, which is what I think many backers were hoping for. In addition to the graphics being modern, the story and the arrangement of the world also seemed different. Not as much was explorable / not as many objects were clickable. It felt in places like an adventure game being optimized for a future tablet computing / iPad experience. Vela's world especially suffered a little from my feeling as though I'd crossed vast amounts of space with little effort. I know some material was cut out that would have mitigated this.

As I said, though, the characters, the story, and the world are all rich and promising. I look forward to the next part and don't at all regret backing. For the documentary alone, I think my money has been well spent.

I've also recently enjoyed the first chapter of The Wolf Among Us, which I got my Fables-reading wife for Christmas.

Yeah, that looks like the link. It's being tossed around a lot more today than yesterday, which means a lot of people are in the same boat. Is your HB account the same as your KS email?

I never got it either, Stu, but there's a link from another backer in the comments to request a new link from Humble Bundle. That worked for me. You have to have Steam to install.

But yeah, it's a disappointment to have to do that. Not sure if the fault lies with KS or with them, though.

The art reminds me of PBS Kids shows my son watches, what with the textured puppetry. I think it's lovely so far, though I've only played for 10 minutes, and especially like the work in moving the camera in natural ways, close-ups of characters talking, zooms to corners of rooms, etc.

Put it this way

I think this is a super helpful post because of the examples you provide, and I also appreciate that by using some of them, you're saying, "Well, this is a bit crap, innit?"
