I'm sure this is relatively simple but it is my first time writing a function.  I'm trying to write a function to make it easier to make someone face another direction.  I know how I could set it up for one character but I can't figure out how to make a single function be able to work for all characters.  Any ideas?

I love games with parsers in them mainly because it gives an extra dimension to puzzles.

Whereas original style games. (Games with look, walk, interact, and talk) simplify what puzzles can be done while at the same time making it easier for people to use the game.

So I was thinking of using a parser at some parts of a game where the solution would be to obvious with the normal interface while using a regular interface at most other places.

So what are your thoughts?

This is actually a problem in "A Night to Remember" a game that I released about a month ago.  When players are walking up the stairs that are at an angle sometimes the player will get stuck while walking down the stairs.
I looked at the walkable areas and they aren't small and it is completely filled.

Does anybody have any idea why this would happen?

General Discussion / Download link changing
Thu 20/08/2009 23:43:24
So for the last about month the download for my game has been working fine but yesterday instead of clicking on it making it download it takes you to mediafire's homepage and no way to download the game.  I fixed it but I don't want to have to go and check it every single day to make sure people can still download it.

Any idea why this would happen?

Before I say anything else let me make clear that I am not being impatient I am just curious.  I was wondering how long it takes for the AGS rating panel to rate games or what system they use.  I saw the game Heed uploaded by Ben304 on July 15th and it got a rating before the end of the month if I remember correctly Whereas The Devil's Shroud part I came out on the 24th of January and yet has no rating.  My guess is they wait for a certain number of downloads or something.  Can anyone else shed some light on this?

-Thanks!

Critics' Lounge / Coffee shop
Wed 05/08/2009 03:58:50
If you can't tell this is a coffee shop.  I have not yet done lighting for this room yet mainly because i can't figure out how to give a very soft lighting and I'm getting tired.  Also I couldn't figure out what colors to use for it's wall or for it's floor (I actually spent about an hour trying to figure out proper colors but that seems to be my weakness) and I ended up going with what i have here... The only problem is that I don't feel like it has a feel of a coffee shop.  It also feels a little bit bare but I'm not sure what I can add.  In fact the only thing I am really satisfied with in this whole room is the table and chairs in the middle...  If there are any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

Is there a way to turn on and off backgrounds within a room. I have one with a light on and windows darkened and then 3 with the light off and the stars sparkling.  Is there a way to have the light one going and then turn it off and turn on the other three?

Critics' Lounge / Upgrading my sprites
Tue 28/07/2009 15:48:28
Alright, as I have said my brother is no longer doing the art in my next game so I have to learn how.  I decided to switch from 320x200 to 640x400 so I could get a little bit more detail.  The only problem with this is I have to update all of my sprites to twice their size which isn't working all that well.

Here's Nathan: The main character in my last game

Here are the sprites I am working on for my next game:

I am somewhat happy with the front view but I am totally stuck on the side view, it just looks strange and I'm not sure what to do with it.

Critics' Lounge / First Attempt.
Mon 27/07/2009 22:42:55
In my previous game my brother did all the artwork but he doesn't want to work on this next one so I'm learning how.  This is my first attempt at a background.

The things I cant figure out are:

1. The stars don't look realistic. (I'm not sure what colors to use.
2. The wall doesn't seem like the right color for the carpet and all I could find that
worked was a gray color and that matched too much with the house in the           previous game.
3.  The lamp looks more like a giant flashlight.
4.  I'm not sure how to do lighting... (I'm using Microsoft Paint)

Sorry if these problems are to simple but I'd appreciate any help.

Edit:  I intend to make it darker over to the right so the empty space wont be a problem.  I just don't know how to do the lighting yet.

Beginners' Technical Questions / Parser
Sat 25/07/2009 01:13:33
I'm working on setting up a parser for a game and I want to set it so that The player can just start typing and the GUI will show up, much like Trilby's Notes.  Do I have to set each of the letter keys  individually or is there a way to do it more efficiently?
#32
I was wondering what all your opinions are on text style games like Trilby's Notes.  I personally love them because they allow you to try to do anything which wouldn't happen in a normal adventure game.  Of course there are some problems like with wording things correctly.  I am wondering however because I am considering making a game in that same style and I want to know what other people think.

My name is Nathan Carter.
Though... My current associates know me only as Arthur Barrington.
I'm a con artist and the person I am working on now could be my biggest job yet. After this I hope to retire.
You see Victor Sammuels a rich entrepreneur is having a dinner party with his closest friends tonight and I happen to be among that company.
As far as I can tell there is a decent chance that something illegal is going on at his company and blackmail is my specialty.
I should be able to search the house tonight when the opportunity presents itself and hopefully it wont be long till I get my reward.
This may sound corny but this should be a night to remember.

Nathan may have understated just how much of a night to remember this will be but then he doesn't know whats going to happen does he?  Everything goes well and then something goes horribly wrong that puts the lives of Nathan and all the other party guests in danger (and perhaps a few others) and he has to rely on his (or rather your) wits to make it through the night.

I would like to ask those who play the game to comment and vote on the games quality as this will help me understand what I need to improve on for the next game I make.

Here is a link to the game:

Im trying to figure out how to make it so that when the play clicks on a walkable area with the interact, look at, or talk to interaction the player will walk there, this is so it will be easier for the player to move around and they wont have to change their icons as often.

For the final scene of my game it is precisely timed so the music ends at the same time as when the scene ends but only if the player lets all of the things being said pass without clicking.  Is there a way to disable skipping any dialogue?

Im not sure what is wrong I used an article on the AGS help site but I cant get this part to work properly.  No errors come up but it doesnt actually save anything and no name appears in the list box.  The code below is for the save button.  Any ideas?

function Button8_OnClick(GUIControl *control, MouseButton button)
{
int totalSaves = lstSaveGames.ItemCount; //number of saves on list
String saveName = txtSaveName.Text; //holds value of txtSaveName

//Check for a save name. If none, tell them.  Else, go on.
if(saveName == "")
{
   Display("Enter a name for your save file.");
   return;
}
//If there is no saved games yet, just save it.
if(lstSaveGames.SelectedIndex == 1)
{
   SaveGameSlot(totalSaves+1, saveName);
   gSaveGame.Visible = false;
}
else
{
   int checkSave = 0; //runs through the list and checks for double entries
   while(checkSave != totalSaves)
   {
     if(saveName == lstSaveGames.Items[checkSave]) // one matches, so overwrite it.
     {
       //if so, overwrite the selected save game
       gSaveGame.Visible = false;
       SaveGameSlot(savegameindex[checkSave], saveName);
       return;
     }
     checkSave++;
   }
   //if we've made it here, then there is no match; just save to a new slot.
   if(totalSaves < 20)
   {
     gSaveGame.Visible = false;
     SaveGameSlot(totalSaves+1, saveName);
   }
   else
   {
     Display("The maximum number of saved games has been reached; overwrite or delete some old ones.");
   }
}

Advanced Technical Forum / Problem found
Thu 02/07/2009 22:09:59
I found that when your editing a GUI and you put for the font a number that does not correspond with an actual font in the game (in my case 0, 1, or 2) it displays the font that corresponds with 0 in the editor. However, when actually running the program if the GUI tries to display itself this appears.

---------------------------
Illegal exception
---------------------------
An exception 0xC0000005 occurred in ACWIN.EXE at EIP = 0x0043FC07 ; program pointer is +379, ACI version 3.12.1074, gtags (446,5)

AGS cannot continue, this exception was fatal. Please note down the numbers above, remember what you were doing at the time and post the details on the AGS Technical Forum.

Most versions of Windows allow you to press Ctrl+C now to copy this entire message to the clipboard for easy reporting.

An error file CrashInfo.dmp has been created. You may be asked to upload this file when reporting this problem on the AGS Forums. (code 0)
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

Obviously to fix this problem all you have to do is to change the font to something that actually works.  The only problem is that the editor doesn't say what the problem is so I had no idea for about five minutes.

So this is more of a suggestion for a future version of AGS than anything.

Thanks.

I am having a few problems in trying to compile my game.

1) When played in full screen there is a lot more black area than in separate window mode.
2) The music is not playing from the right files but is using a much older file
I think the second one I have to do the rebuild VOX thing but I cant find it.

I have the music saved as Music1.mid
and the code im using is PlayMusic(1);
