I'm not sure about your nephews, but my sister and her friends play Nancy Drew all the time. They're pretty hard for young kids and they are kind of girly, but they're not violent or anything. Very mild as far as most games go.

Really, it depends on the style. I think people get too into their band names and album art and stuff, and they don't even think about the music. Crank out like 5 tracks and then base your name and art off of what you have accomplished.

Critics' Lounge / Re: New song! Heavy!

It's not bad. I know it's not finished, but I still have a few comments. Guitar is droney, but it's great for rhythm. That intro rhythm is lost in the distortion. I love the right channel guitar during the slow breakdown. I'd add some wah (or more if there is some) during the second chord when the riff goes up. There are some panning issues. The left channel guitar is too far left. Everything else feels like it's slightly right.

Vocally, the tone is nice during the heavy parts. But there are too many effects during the quiet parts. I know NIN is sort of a cliche sort of thing to model your music after, but he's got his shit down. Mr. Self Destruct balances not only amount of effect, but how "heavy" the lyrics are. There are many other tracks that do this, but I think Mr. Self Destruct has a much more obvious change.

But that lighter breakdown is awesome. It's not really along the same lines of style, but the song The First Vietnamese War by The Black Angels has a wicked guitar riff with wah, and something along those lines would be awesome over that breakdown. Here's the track from their website.

It's an interesting concept. The problem is, no one wants to rate a bunch of games. And won't the first few games people rate be poorly influenced? Like, what if there were a few short games that people rated for their first few ratings? Wouldn't they always have a low score?

Maybe if we're going to use an in depth math related system, we could take another approach. Perhaps we could sort by downloads and rating at the same time? I'm no good at math, but maybe something like this?

[Rating + 2 * [Number of Downloads / (Total Global Downloads)]] / 3

So a game with a rating of 7 out of 10 (70%) and 500 downloads might look like this, given that there are 10000 game downloads or something.

[0.7 + 5 * (500 / 10000)] / 3 = .3167

I mean, it's an arbitrary number, but it's something. I think it's important that the rating is related to number of downloads. It wouldn't be perfect, but maybe you could organize another way too, like sorting by rating and then number of downloads within the sorted rating?

I dunno, but I agree that this needs to be changed. It comes up so much, maybe it's time.

LGM and I bought bought first gen Zunes at the same time. I like mine. It's a 40 gig and it holds a lot. The best part is the customizable background, as well as the radio receiver. It's got P2P (more like zune to zune) sharing, but only for a few plays. There's no click wheel either, it's more like a direction pad with an extra middle button. Battery life rocks too. I wouldn't recommend one if you could get an iPod touch or something, but if you're looking on the cheap end, old Zunes aren't a bad choice.

It's okay texturing. Morrowind's textures are stretched pretty far anyway, and these aren't anything that's that different.

Futurama: Jurassic Bark

I agree. That's the saddest thing I've seen on TV. "The Luck of the Fryrish" is also sad, but not a tear jerker like Jurassic Bark is.

No, the lines on the island in the forground. Tree looks awesome though.

Background animation is great, but I'm not a fan of the dark lines on the island. Doesn't look very clean. Walking animations look good too. Reminds me of a pastel Gobliiins.

I really love it. There are a lot of things that bug me about it though. The perspective of the steps, the height of the building in comparison to the characters, shape of the islands. All minor things, but that damn square inside a circle sun is driving me mad.

I also agree that the tree could be a little fuller.

I think this is a wonderful idea. Especially if, as Darth said, it were possible to add color variations throughout. Art has never been a strong suite with me, so I would definitely use something like this. ;D

Yeah, like a hue alteration thing would be great. A slider for adjusting hue, or a hex code input for walls or something. And as long as the styles are consistant, and all of the shadow were worked out, I think it would be a great tool. I might actually finish a game. :D

Critics' Lounge / Re: BG: Torture room
Sun 17/02/2008 00:49:20
Aside from the weird lamp shape, I LOVE the first version. It's not great for a torture room, but I think that too many people try to take on this noir style, that really ruins the quality of their work. I'd leave the lighting alone unless it's a scene where they're actually torturing someone, then I might go with Cluey's idea, but maybe not so dark. Just a medium tone that's semi-opaque.

Not a great torture chamber, but if they hang out there, I'd think there would be seating, like a couch or some chairs.

Maybe straighten up the wall edges because the weird lines aren't really working. Also, I might add some depth to the broken plaster/drywall.

Trailer was kind of bogus, but it gave me a great feel of the movie. I think Harrison Ford will have developed his character into something that we'll really love and connect with more than the other movies.

Also, the action and style have improved, IMO. National Treasure took on Indiana Jones, and now they're taking National Treasure's improved action style and applying it back into Indiana Jones.

Looks good, but I guess we'll see.

I know many, but these are the ones my friends and I have been using lately.

"Do you Hūsker Dū?"

"Has anyone ever told you your eyes look like Space Crystals?"

"Nice shoes. Wanna fuck?"

And this one, which is awful, I've never used, but want to so bad. What you do is you make eye contact with a girl, and then motion for you to come over using your index finger, like curling it or whatever. Then when she shows up, you say, "If I can make you come with 1 finger, but imagine what I could do with 10."

This is degrading to women. And to the male race.

Critics' Lounge / Re: 2 songs, critique please

I wrote up something yesterday, but closed all of my tabs on accident. Oh well.

Poseidon:
As for the clarity thing, I'd have to disagree. Radiohead is a special case. Thom Yorke has a very distinct, personal style and it really makes their music. They have great lyrics, but I can't understand anything he says. I didn't truly appreciate Hail To the Thief until I looked up the lyrics. Besides, Yorke has some great melodies, so who cares about the lyrics? The reverb on the vocals, though, feels a bit much at the beginning of the song, but by the end it's not bad.

The guitar is nice. The song is very folky, which isn't my taste, but it's well done. The bass is too flat sounding, too bassy. There's a bit of clipping too, which I think is the bass.

I was surprised when the second guitar came in. When it started, I was sort of, "Meh, Andail and a guitar." Then the other guitar(s) kicked in and I was wowed. The piano snuck up on me too.

I think last time I commented on your music I mentioned how your lyrics flowed. Over all, the flow is nice, but there are some weird spots. There's something about the space between "chamomile tea" and "well I'm." It could be that the chamomile tea part is rushed. I'm not sure. It just stuck out to me. The line after "it forks at every choice" also feels rushed. And "fuss" sounds like "fuzz". Could be a European thing, but I don't know. Is it poh-say-dun or poh-sigh-den? That could be a language thing too.

Restless:
Very midival feel. Right after "attire", the guitar bit ends with a bit of background noise. Same with at the end.

Organs feel out of place. Maybe just use a similar thing as the "La"s, but do a quiet "Ah".

"Nose" or "Notes" is a bit shaky. Sounds like a note you're stretching to hit.

And again, the reverb is a bit much. I'm not sure how you're recording, but sometimes I'll put a sock or a glove over the mic and rubber band it tight and not only does it work like a pop filter, but it'll warm up the vocals a bit. Try something raw. It may sound weird to you, but everyone that records their own voice feels the need to do a bunch of stuff to it to make it sound real or better, which most of the time isn't the case.

Everything sounds good, I'm just nitpicking minor stuff.

I like how in depth your idea is Loominous. It would be hard to keep one style, but maybe as a community collaboration, it might work. Packaging it with AGS would make the potentially large file size less of an issue. If they're going to download it, they're going to download it regardless, especially if it's free.

Republicans who aren't happy with their candidates, are really breaking their shell and voting for Obama and Edwards. But if it comes down to McCain and Clinton, those Republicans who would otherwise voted for Obama or Edwards, won't vote for Clinton.

But, though I would rather not have Hilary as our president, I guess I can't complain as long as Bush is gone.
