General Discussion / Re: Super Tuesday
Wed 06/02/2008 01:33:46
They call it Super Tuesday because a bunch of states (24 of 52) have primaries and caucuses today. The rest of the states do theirs on different days. They call it that because it's a major turning point for the candidates.

Bush is out January 20, 2009.

Edit: Um, I guess there are 51 groups in the electoral college, but for some reason I thought the 52nd was Puerto Rico. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi-hats are awful. The bass is too metallic for my taste. And when you get to the "heavy" part (0:45ish) it's quiet. There's a build, but there's no volume build.

It's not horrible, but it's very faux-industrial, like Lucas-Arts trying to make a NIN cover for an adventure game.

What program are you using?

Eh... It's only half as much as a student...

I like the style. The character appeals to me and the backgrounds have a good feel. There are some weird things, like the plants and the door handle, and some of the perspective. Colors are a little bright and the paneling on the walls is to low in contrast. The anti-aliasing makes everything feel blurry.

Doors seem a bit large. Not wrong, just feel misplaced. The bulletin board is too high, no one could read all of the high stuff. The top of it should be around the top of the door. Desk looks rather dark. I'd imagine that would be one of the brighter places. The desk, the door, and bulletin board should all be lit brightly, the rest could be less bright. Like the shadow from the desk isn't right for how much light that lamp is putting out.

Some of the textures are a little stretched. Marble floors for one. Too fancy for a wooden lodge like hotel. Unless the stone texture on the desk is supposed to look fake, maybe shape the end a bit to make it look made of stone.

I never have this problem with Photoshop CS3, but Illustrator CS3 gives me so much trouble. I think it's partly because it tuns on more memory, and whenever I'm using it I'm using 10 other things, but statistically it's worse.

I liked the concept of the DS, with the two interacting screens. And in some situations, like Darth said about Zelda, all aspects of the DS design were used to their full advantage.

Hypothetically, if you took the time to figure out how to produce your game so that it could be played on the DS, and could design your programming around the two screens, who's to say it would even be worth it? Designing games is incredibly complex. Even something as revolutionary as the Wii hasn't been utilized to its full potential. Being able to walk from one screen to another won't impress the DS owner. You've got to find a way to use the features in a way that Adventure games have an advantage, something other games on the DS don't.

And who would play your game? Not many people own a DS. And if I owned a DS, I probably won't feel inclined to play your game other than that there is a connection to the boards.

Give me an example of what amazing things you could do by combining the DS features with Adventure style games, and I'd support you.

And like MessaBlue said, by the time you're done making your game, people will be like "What the hell is a DS? I've got Wii 2.0" or something.

Actually I realized that after I got halfway through. Sorry that it looks so similar.

Actually, I think they're not that similar. Sure it's space and there's a path, but yours is much more detailed than that. The railed car or train, the different platforms, the depth. There's way more story in your image, I can tell how the game would feel and play like.

Sorry, Akatosh, but I vote for JoelPhilipPage. Great work!

My guess would be it's a broken backlight. Monitor might not be getting enough power or something. Try another monitor to see if it's not just the computer.

I don't know much about lighting, but I'd think it'd look something like this? Also, for as long as the shadow is from the desk, I'd think there would be some dark places on the wall. Same with around the door, because the light source is bright.

I loved Tarantino's cameo. It gave you a good sense of what the virus did to people. Willis's part was too over the top. At least the blob was better than the hulk that Willis turned into. Looked like a fleshy Hitler Mecha from Wolfenstein. Besides, Planet Terror didn't even have that many Zombie scenes in it!

Funny bit of info, Tarantino plays one of the zombies that kills Fergie. On the DVD special features she talks about how he kept biting her on the neck and leaving hickies and marks.

Just a heads up to anyone reading this, the headphones that Boyd first posted about are on sale at Musicians Friend.

Have to buy them tonight though (1/24). :/ Just thought I'd share with those from the US.

Well, my argument was that in order for a human to die and come back to life, would be for a virus to take control of the brain and start the body back up again and bring itself back to life. The heart would have to start again to pump blood the the limbs so they could move and the lungs would have to provide blood, and the body would be taking in blood and guts as a food providing the body with some nutrients. All of this activity would reactivate the body and slow the deterioration and decay.

Depending on how you claim a zombie virus would work will change how they move. Some claim it takes over the brain and just controls the body. If that's the case, without blood pumping to the muscles, you could move hardly at all before your body completely stopped.

Realistically, how a zombie virus could actually bring someone dead back to life, would require brain function, which would require oxygen, which would require blood flow, etc.

Flapwing was great. Took a long time for me to figure out what was going on, but when I got it everything made sense. It was the perfect amount of confusion and understanding.

The Cardiac Oak was alright. Not much of a story, and I wish it would have ended better. I've never been a fan of the faux-tinting and it looks too green to me and not blue enough. Some of the early vignettes aren't subtle enough. Like the hand on the walking stick I think moves in and out of one and it immediately caught my attention.

Loved the Pirate one. Gets sidetracked a few times. Great style, far better than Flapwing which also had an amazing style. It would make a good kid show, if not for the Hell and the odd jokes. The music was too loud at the beginning of the video and I couldn't hear the singing.

But I'm not sure how far your role as director gives you room to change.

Oh, and fantastic 3D work and sets/props. Very professional.

I wrote an article for a school newspaper (that was rejected) about how nuclear war now is less of an issue then bio-terrorism and how it's possible and more likely that terrorists would release a mass zombie pandemic than give us smallpox or something.

In reality, if it was possible to turn a human into a zombie (dead back to life to kill people) they would be fast and mobile, just like the zombies from the remake of Dawn of the Dead or 28 Whatevers Later. There would be a loss of sensory of fatigue and they could run faster longer.

Sure they could be less intelligent and moan and move in heards and whatnot, but they would move just as fast as we would. Prog is right about the decaying thing, but most of the zombies in movies are infected from a bite, which would hardly "decay" your body any. Maybe you'd lose mass amounts of blood and lose dexterity and some mobility, but a simple hand bite would turn you into an olympic runner, but with a taste for brains.

The 3/4 needs some help. The face is very washed out and the lines of the body are grey. Boosting the contrast would help. This style is very cartoony, but the size of the feet are huge and the arms are short and the hands are small.

Well, as for the head problem, the main issue is that his proportions change. The 3/4 is on the left and I drew lines to show where the parts of the body should be on the side view, give or take a bit because of maybe a slight "bob" in his walk.

Changed the purple, because it hurt my eyes.

Also, when you post images, you don't have to scale them before you post them. You can use the [ img ] tags for normal sizing and [ img width=# height=# ] to double it. If you were to quote from my post, you'd see how I did my image.

Cutting down on the number of colors is pure choice. Most people make their games with low color counts because of tradition. It is best to cut down as many colors as possible when spriting, but with something like this, it isn't necessary. AGS now can run millions of colors when it used to run, I dunno, 256? 512?

It looks alright, IMO. From what I've seen it looks a bit too sappy. "What are you doing?" "If this turns out to be a big thing, I want to record it." "I'll never let go, Jack."

It's all boring crap mixed in with the good stuff. I loved the remake of Dawn of the Dead. But again, it was too love-story. Everyone is too ignorant about the zombies. "What is that thing" "People are coming back to life and we don't know why!" They're Zombies you fucks. Why don't they ever call them what they are within the first, I dunno, minute of the event. Someone is dead and they come back to live. Zombie. Shoot it in the head and run for cover. 28 Weeks Later had a great mix of everything. It was well done and I felt there was just the right amount of everything.

But, I do have respect for Romero, so I can only hope for the best. Anything will be better than Land of the Dead. That movie made zombie flicks look like a kids show. The Wiggles featuring their friends the Undead.

I had a friend who's processor/processor fan caught fire while he was on it. Thankfully it didn't burn up the board.

I never backup my PC, but after hearing horror stories like this maybe I should. Then again, I'd probably be more upset about my computer burning up than losing my stuff.

I'm actually in the same boat. I've been on the lookout for some nice closed, noise isolation (not canceling!) headphones.

The ones that Boyd posted look decent, except I've heard they are very uncomfortable and not that great range wise.

LGM has a pair of Sennheiser HD201's which are great. I've mixed with them and they are comfy and have a great sound quality with a good amount of isolation. They are quite tight though and my glasses don't sit right when I wear them. Other that that they only other gripe I have with them is the cable comes from both sides of the headphones and it's rather thin. I've gone through 3 pairs of headphones this year because of tripping over the cable.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Sennheiser-HD201-Pro-Closed-Back-Headphones?sku=242417

And for only $25, you can't go wrong. Though if I had the money I'd buy something like these.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Sony-MDR7509HD-Studio-Headphone?sku=422040

What you really want for mixing, is a closed, noise isolating headphone. Noise cancelling is NOT what you want. The difference is that noise isolating keeps outside noise quiet and less bothersome while working. Noise canceling removes noise from the audio track itself. If you want a killer pair of headphones that cancel, buy some Bose super comfortable ones like they sell at the Sharper Image or something.
