Turbo Kid I've mentioned. Plus, you could try actual 80's movies. I saw Cherry 2000 only last month or so and it's a fun flick, with an interesting take on society. The classic Total Recall, of course. "They live" I don't have to mention to you, do I? 1998's Six String Samurai was weirdly enjoyable, too. "Fifth Element". And if you want to go even further into the cinematic past -- "Soylent green".

Still, I would love something new that'd draw from the retrowave aesthetic directly, with magenta lights and all, like Kavinsky's Odd Look video. I love how the guy's face is always tinted teal, in the spirit of Mario Bava's cinematic style.

Yeah, Hoff was pretty cool -- but if you want awesome, you need to see THIS. Three words: claymation, Care Bears and Carpenter.

Oh and speaking of claymation, that's exactly what made me drool over Manborg. And there's something to the visual quality of the movie that instantly made me think of Neofeud. I like how raw it feels.

Dude, are you my lost twin or something? I checked Trevor Something on NRW just yesterday -- and ordered Manborg DVD, which has been on my wishlist for a while now, literally five minutes ago (along with Wolfcop and Turbo Kid). And saw Kung Fury on day 1.

A synth soundtrack for Neofeud! Hell yeah! I agree, Lazerhawk's great with rhytm and atmosphere, which would be perfect for background music. Check out VHS Glitch, too. He has that same rhytmic prowess as Lazerhawk, more of that Carpenterian epic spookiness and intensity -- AND seems to be no stranger to the theme of technological dystopias.

That is so awesome! :D I'm totally into this synth revival. Perturbator I do love, but the kind of dark intsensity is a bit overwhelming and I have to ease into it. But I'm getting there! Carpenter Brut pretty close, if a bit more dreamy -- and VHS Glitch completely sucked me into classic horror synth. And there's plenty of other things to pick from: more disco-oriented stuff like Scattle, neo-romatic Gunship, Lazerhawk with their cosmic tunes.

As for dystopian sci-fi, I love PKD for how he's sci-fi and not sci-fi at all, and his novels are first and foremost about people and their struggle. I love "Blade Runner" the movie, but the book blew my mind. Another one that comes to mind is Harlan Ellison -- who was actually more into the fantastic, but things like "Jeffty is Five" are so relatable on the most basic human level.

Have I told you just how much I love the intense, saturated lights? The reds, lime greens -- and, of course, magentas! :) You could make videos for some horror synth band, like this one.

Also, I just love the tagline: "Smart - so you don't have to be" (roll) What I love about dystopias is that they're deeply rooted in todays world, just showing it for what it is rather than what it pretends to be.

Sadly, this challenge I will not undertake
I already have one project to make
But I bring some creepy tunes
To listen to in the dark of new moon
May they bring shivers and mey they inspire
Creativity -- or dark desires!

I was skeptical at first, but this actually looks...

The style of the original was basically perfect, so it's a good thing they stuck to it rather than try to do a 3D remake in the vein of Sam'n'Max. That said, I'd love to see DotT reimagined in some unconventional way - say, in claymation.

I'm a noob to the political management genre -- but I was drawn to this game as a natural born tyrrant (laugh) So far I haven't gotten very far. In fact, I started out with the intontion to test the boundaries of how bad a ruler I can be! (laugh) Strangely enough, my downfall wasn't as fast as I thought -- and my ultimate fate not nearly as harsh as it should've been ;)

General Discussion / Re: Goodbye MAGS

Atelier, admit it, you only did it because I'm almost done with my last years' August MAGS and you were afraid I'd jump right back in for next month's competition -- and then, at the end of the month, I'd start perstering you about extending the deadline ;)

But I won't do that to Stu... yet (laugh) I do feel a need for a creative challenge -- but November is the month of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) and I've been dying to just sit down and write something.

In any case -- good luck with whatever you're up to :)

SilverSpook: I'm still not sure what format would suit a story -- I'm torn between making it an online comic strip OR trying to go commercial with a regular 24-page booklet. I love webcomics, my current one is well past 600 strips right now -- but The Dream was always to go pro, and maybe, just maybe, release something on paper someday. Digital is a more realistic goal -- and there's plenty of fun to have with the format as well. And I yearn to revive my older webcomic (I'm pretty sure I've posted the link before, in this very thread). I think I'm onto something with the style I'm developing for it, because hyper-realism that I achieved towards the end was waaaay too time taking -- I'd spend crazy hours on a single page.
Also, this morning Problem let me know the last few tracks are alllmost there -- so the pink mayhem's impending!(laugh)

Crash: Twarda's art is brilliant, I'm a noob compared to her. I might've regressed a little, too, through the years of drawing my current comic strip, where I make super-simple cartoony doodles and, with no background art in most of them, I don't practice composition much. It's with the games that I really need to plan out the placement of objects and characters on the screen -- and I wish I could transfer that ability and expand it, with more dynamic action, in a superhero comic.
As for these doodles, no, all the game's graphics assets are done and in place -- BUT there will be PLENTY of cameos from DC's and Marvel's superheroes, as well as other cartoon/game characters. The classic Harley is there! (there's a pic somewhere earlier in the thread)

Thanks :) I've actually stuck with my "one doodle a day" challenge. My favorite has to be my own rendition of Harley Quinn.

Part of the challenge is to also stick to the 16 color EGA palette -- and it's a fun experience.

You can check my other Gotham Girls on my DeviantART profile -- 4 so far, and hopefully a new pic every other day.

Work's been kinda slow -- but we're getting there. Problem's free to work on the music now that the press kits for Rogue State have been sent out.

Me, I've been pondering on the idea of making a regular Magenta comic. For that, however, I need to up my skills as a cartoonist -- and so I decided to practice more. Here's my today's doodlings:

It's my take on Batman's Catwoman -- with less detail to the costume and more of little touches that make her look more like an actual cat: the scratches on her cheels imitating whiskers, the yellow nail polish making her nail look like a claw, and her figure's very slender, the female curves being merely hinted at with the tails.

Sure it's ok. People who are new to the project will probably check the post first rather than the last update -- so that's your best chance to make a good first impression.

Looks beautiful and intriguing -- and sounds absolutely gorgeous. This is going to be EPIC!

And my, what a stunningly handsome adversary! (laugh)

That's a huge and intricate design. At first I didn't even notice you can stroll sideways -- and that's where it gets really interesting.

And in response to your question: I'm in Poland. Most of these immigrants are heading for Germany, our nearest neighbor to the West -- but Auntie Angela's made it so that they're forced to stay in the country that they're registered in. So it's bound to get ugly. Plus, the whole former Eastern bloc -- which we're a part of -- is largely mono-cultural. And a self-proclaimed bastion of Catholicism ;)

It's a new game from the guy that made Blueberry Garden and it looks pretty SWEET! It appears to be an adventure/RPG game with emphasis on interacting with other characters and hacking various devices. The trailer doesn't hint to a bigger plot: no grand conflict to resolve, no great danger or some such -- but... maybe that's a good thing? I like a game that lets me just walk around, talk and enjoy the views -- where nobody's trying to shoot me and where I don't have to watch my every step. Even Fez got too hardcore for me past a certain point.
What do you guys think? Has anyone heard of/played this one? Thoughts?

It's been a month and a half since the last update, so a quick update would be in order. These past six weeks I've spent recording all sound effects myself -- and pestering Problem about the soundtrack. Now, with both almost done, with only a few minor things to add, I'd say Magenta will be out on patrol in a couple of weeks.

I also got permission from my old-time myspace friends Twilite to use their song in the game's outro/credits :cheesy: I'm super happy about it!

And it appears that today is the fifth anniversary of me registering on the forums! 8-0

Oh, you don't have to tell me about the migration crisis. Here in Europe it's #1 topic on the news all day every day, trying to sway everyone this way or that way: first, they show you sad little kids and weary people walking along the train tracks, so you go awww -- and then it jumps to a footage of a horde of young men going berserk.

There's something about it that immediately made me think of Blomkamp's movies. The kind of scrapland ghetto, work-with-what-you got feel of the location. The collage style really works.
