Auditions are closed! Thanks to all who participated!

Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok is looking for voice actors! We require actors to fill the roles of 32 characters, ranging from young to old, male and female.  The average number of lines per character is around 80; but there are a number of characters which have more or less lines.

How to Audition
We are looking for reliable voice actors who can breathe life into our characters. Sound quality is a must, as well as the ability to speak lines convincingly. If you are looking at expanding your portfolio and can commit the time to record the lines, then we're interested in you!
As this game has so far been developed on zero budget, and will be released to the public FREE for download, we are unable to provide monetary compensation. However, we will gladly provide in-game and documentation credit for each of the characters you voice.
Simply record a couple of lines for any of the characters you wish to audition for, and please send the files in .OGG format to me (Fizzii) at fizzii_ish@yahoo.com.

Characters and Dialog for Voice Auditions
The following characters are the roles we wish to cast. Heroine's Quest will not contain narrator voice dialog due to the copious number of descriptions in game.
The game is inspired, among other things, by Wagner's operas. Therefore, several of the characters are supposed to be bombastic and hammy, such as Sigurd, Brynhild, Loki, Thrivaldi, and Ratatosk. Feel free to chew the scenery, and overact that.
Note that most of the non-human creatures are several centuries old; the ages given indicate what they look and sound like.

A pronunciation guide can be found here on how to manage the various Nordic names.

If you don't want any spoilers, please do not click below. If you wish to see the portraits, PM me.

Male Voices
Spoiler

Snorri
Number of Lines: 120 - 150
Sex: Male
Age: 30 - 35
Description: Loyal soldier to Jarl Ylfing, Snorri is a fierce warrior and sea captain who relies on speed and cunning rather than brute strength. He is a gambler, roguish in demeanor, and fancies himself quite the ladies' man.
Audition Line 1: "Our lady Lithrasir keeps the clouds away with her smile, and draws the Aesir to our town with her cooking."
Audition Line 2: "I believe you have been a credit to our city ever since you reside here. But I am the captain of the guard to Jarl Ylfing, so I feel the duty to test your skills personally before I can vouch for you."

Aurvandel
CLOSED
Number of Lines: 120 - 150
Sex: Male
Age: Old
Description: A powerful and aging wizard, Aurvandel is magical advisor to Jarl Ylfing and charged with protecting the city. He is competent and knows a lot of arcane lore, but once asked tends to not shut up about it, to the point of repeating himself. Also, he repeats himself.
Audition Line 1: "It is an undead spirit, which has risen from the dead to become undead and no longer dead. It shall be your task to make it dead again, instead of undead."
Audition Line 2: "And there is the noble giant, which is part of the jotunn nobility, and uses the equipment of a noble. These are somewhat more intelligent than the common giant, although being giants, they lack noble behavior."

Sigurd
CLOSED
Number of Lines: 120 - 150
Sex: Male
Age: mid-30s
Description: A fierce and experienced warrior, Sigurd protect his village from any monsters which dare to attack it, making him its informal leader. He is honest and to the point, and has enough combat experience that he doesn't need to prove himself to anyone anymore. He tends to clash with Ylfing.
Audition Line 1: "I am Sigurd, son of Sigmund, and I fear no troll!"
Audition Line 2: "While no proven warrior would stoop so low as to steal like a common magpie, I do not think I can vouch for all in this town."

Thrivaldi (1)
Number of Lines: 120 - 150
Sex: Male
Age: ~25
Description: A two-headed troll who is extremely strong, he fancies himself king of all trolls and is the right-hand man to Egther the frost giant. He tends to argue with himself. His left head is boastful, loud, and full of bravado. It enjoys eating, punching things, and punching things and then eating them.
Audition Line 1: "Know this, human: we punch through mountains with a swing of our fist!"
Audition Line 2: "And then we give the Eye to our Master, and the Master will be proud! Oho, yes!"

Thrivaldi (2)
Number of Lines: 120 - 150
Sex: Male
Age: ~25
Description: Thrivaldi's right head is smarter than the left, not that that's saying much. He would very much like to impress everybody with his cunning and leadership ability, but is preciously lacking in both. This head is sneering, somewhat contemplative, and still loud.
Audition Line 1: "You do not impress anyone by talking about puny kittens!"
Audition Line 2: "And then you follow my lead! I know where to find the hero girl!"

Volund
CLOSED
Number of Lines: 70 - 90
Sex: Male
Age: ~30
Description: Blacksmith and soldier to Jarl Ylfing, Volund's craft is unmatched by any human (though surpassed by the svartalfar). He is a strong and serious man who is loyal to his family, and fiercely proud of his son Heime.
Audition Line 1: "I am very proud of Heime; he is already shaping up to become a powerful warrior. It will not be long before he wields a true blade instead of a wooden one."
Audition Line 2: "A powerful warrior needs a powerful weapon, and what could serve you better than a two-bladed axe?"

Liff
CLOSED
Number of Lines: 70 - 90
Sex: Male
Age: ~25
Description: The village herbalist and potion maker, Liff is a gentle man who is friendly and also a bit wistful. He is Lithrasir's love interest, and is a decent fighter even if he dosn't like to admit it.
Audition Line 1: "There is value in potions and alchemy. Odinn of the Shaggy Cloak knows this, and was willing to put out one of his own eyes for a drink from the Mimisbrunnr, the well of wisdom."
Audition Line 2: "Munarvagir is troubled these days. Food supplies are dwindling, and there are more trolls and vargs in the forest than there should be. Yet still we stand."

Regin
Number of Lines: 70 - 90
Sex: Male
Age: ~45
Description: A retired adventurer who now lives in the countryside, Regin is happy to share only mildly exaggerated tales of his past, or to buy fancy stones for his collection. However, his father has been murdered years ago, and he still seeks revenge.
Audition Line 1: "And it is all too clear how that sentence ends. The look in your eye, that dazzling cape, the fact that you walk into Munarvagir in the middle of this harsh winter... Why, you must be an adventurer!"
Audition Line 2: "The town normally runs on the trade through the forest and via Lake Gandvik. During the fimbulwinter this has proven somewhat difficult."

Skrymir
CLOSED
Number of Lines: 70 - 90
Sex: Male
Age: 30
Description: A large and strong Svartalf who studies battle in all its forms, with a fondness for exotic weapons. He is the proud and respected protector of Svartalfheim, and dutiful to a fault. Because he prefers blades to words, he has some trouble expressing himself in human language.
Audition Line 1: "Skrymir of the Svartalfar. Martial artist, guardian of Nidavellir, and dabbling alchemist."
Audition Line 2: "Most trolls, unworthy of attention. Fremont and Thrivaldi, brighter than most, and honorable in their own way."

Andvari
Number of Lines: 70 - 90
Sex: Male
Age: 30 - 40
Description: A svartalf unconcerned with his appearance, Andvari is a master craftsman, possibly the best in the Nine Worlds. He designs and builds things for the sake of it, and does not like to be disturbed while doing so (which is to say, all the time). He is grumpy and impatient, especially with humans.
Audition Line 1: "Perpetuum mobile. I do not expect you to understand, but keep your hands off!"
Audition Line 2: "Nice? All you can say is nice! This was crafted by Andvari, master among the svartalfar! I do not think I waste my time with items that are merely nice!"

Alviss
Number of Lines: 70 - 90
Sex: Male
Age: ~40
Description: Of all svartalfar, inquisitive Alviss is most interested in actually traveling to other realms instead of hearing about them. He knows a lot of the different realms, although he sharply disapproves of some of it.
Audition Line 1: "Did you know that I visited the human town of Munarvagir? What, must I inquire, is that strange barrier surrounding it, made of parts of forest? Why is it that I am unable to enter when I pass between normal trees?"
Audition Line 2: "Why is there a circle of flame within the forest, and who lies entrapped within? Is this another trick of the Aesir, who cowardly entrapped me?"

Arngrim
Number of Lines: 70 - 90
Sex: Male
Age: 30s
Description: The former guildmaster of the adventurer's guild, Arngrim has become a recluse due to illness and now lives in solitude in a tower away from the city. Despite his sickness, he enjoys sharing stories of adventure.
Audition Line 1: "So far 'tis been ice all winter, but if spring should break, I shall be the first t' see it."
Audition Line 2: "Jarnvidr has always had its trolls, but this winter the woods be swarmin' with 'em. They be tough, but no match for a skilled warrior. We have had a troll head decoratin' the guild for a long time."

Fremont
CLOSED
Number of Lines: 70 - 90
Sex: Male
Age: ~30
Description: A steadfast and old-fashioned troll, Fremont does what he thinks trolls do best: live under a bridge and demand a toll from anyone who wants to cross. He lives a simple life and is happy with that, although he's a bit of a coward and, like most trolls, not particularly bright.
Audition Line 1: "That is wrong! They must come here more and bring me good food as toll! Troll must not be hungry."
Audition Line 2: "Have seen her, yes. Ugly girl, look like human with weird pink skin and too small teeth."

Jarl Ylfing
Number of Lines: 30 - 50
Sex: Male
Age: mid-40s
Description: The proud and noble warleader of Fornsigtuna, who speaks with gravity and sternness. Ylfing comes from a long and respected family of clan leaders.
Audition Line 1: "In the name of Odinn the Wise, we bid you welcome to Fornsigtuna. Arise, traveler."
Audition Line 2: "The woods of Jarnvidr around us are becoming dangerous. Wolves, trolls, and undead are on the prowl, and there have been sightings of giants."

Guard
Number of Lines: 30 - 50
Sex: Male
Age: mid-20s
Description: Generic city guard who keeps order.
Audition Line 1: "My lady, the Jarl Ylfing wishes to speak to you in his castle."
Audition Line 2:"We do not appreciate beggars in Fornsigtuna, especially not in winter."

Librarian
Number of Lines: 30 - 50
Sex: Male
Age: Really Old
Description: The librarian is an ancient man who has fought in many battles past, but now sits in the library. Most of the time he appears senile, but sometimes he does have something insightful to say. The inspiration for this character is from The Librarian from the Hilarious House of Frightenstein.
Audition Line 1: "Do not walk counterclockwise, for it will undo your work. Do you understand me? No walking widdershins. Nice word, is it not? Widdershins. I like it a lot."
Audition Line 2: "Why is he there? Heavens, do not ask me. I think he just came with the place. What would an old library be without a good haunting, after all?"

Egther
CLOSED
Number of Lines: 30 - 50
Sex: Male
Age: ~40
Description: The main antagonist in the game, Egther is a powerful frost giant who is well versed in magic and wishes to bring about the downfall of the Gods. Pondering, smart, dark and also mysterious, he achieves a lot of his work through his minions, since he is magically sealed in his icy home.
Audition Line 1: "Speak to me of the Fate of the World, oh Norns. Is it not nigh, and mine to command?"
Audition Line 2: "Precisely. Do not botch this, Thrivaldi. I shall be most displeased if you should fail."

Fafnir
CLOSED
Number of Lines: 30 - 50
Sex: Male
Age: ~25
Description: A well-dressed and snobbish Svartalf who perceives himself as the mayor of their city. The rest of the Svartalfar don't agree, but don't really mind because it doesn't harm anyone. Fafnir enjoys expensive clothing and shiny stones. He is knowledgeable and generally willing to advise you as long as it's clear that he is your superior.
Audition Line 1: "One likes to view this Svartalf as a regal and leading figure among the denizens of Svartalfheim."
Audition Line 2: "One does not understand your obsession with these trinkets. One would think one sees more appeal in gemstone, or possibly gold."

Loki
CLOSED
Number of Lines: 30 - 50
Sex: Male
Age: ~25
Description: A trickster among the frost giants, he used to be friends with Odinn and Thor until his machinations caused the death of Baldr. For his cruelty, the gods have cast him out, imprisoning him in the bowels of the earth, in perpetual torment until the world ends. Loki burns with furious anger at all gods and humans.
Audition Line 1: "Raaagh! Surely you know me if you made it this far. Loki ski-treader, greatest of the Jotunn. Or so I was, before my brother betrayed me and tied me up here!"
Audition Line 2: "Asgard is mine! Mine, I tell you! I shall sit on Odinn's throne and drink the Mead of Poetry from his hollow skull!"

Helgi
Number of Lines: 30 - 50
Sex: Male
Age: ~30s
Description: A proud warrior, brother in arms to Sigurd and husband to Sigrun, Helgi has been slain in proud battle against the forces of Fornsigtuna. You get to speak to his ghost. To a viking, dying in battle is the best way to go: so while he misses Sigrun, he is otherwise content with his fate.
Audition Line 1: "In trade, you should sooner throw than trust them; but in battle they are worthy opponents. You should have seen the fight old Dag put up! He made it to Valhalla too, I am proud to say."
Audition Line 2: "Honor is straight as an arrow. A good viking is even-handed in trade, loyal to his friends and duties, and fearless on the field of battle. No trickery, pure might and skill."

Lithrasir
Number of Lines: 70 - 90

Audition Line 1: "It is good to see a new face and news from the rest of the world, and so I bid you welcome to the Sleipnir Tavern."
Audition Line 2: "My banner shows a griffin, the coat of arms of East Gothland, where the Ylfing clan hails from. It was a gift from the Jarl."

Age: ~30

Sex: Female
Age: late 20s
Description: Brynhild is a valkyrie, one of the chosen of Odinn that flies over the battlefields and escorts the spirits of fallen warriors to Valhalla. She is both wise and proud, and a formidable opponent in battle.
Audition Line 1: "Thou art an unproven mortal, a restless traveler. This is not thy concern, and we shall not speak of this."
Audition Line 2: "A band of humans, led by Ylfing the First, fought against him, and with the mighty blade Tyrfing, the human jarl did strike down the dastardly Jotunn."

Urth, Verthandi and Skuld

Number of Lines: 30 - 50 each
Sexes: Female
Ages: Urth is 60'ish, Verthandi around 35, and Skuld around 18)

She seduces men who fall victim to her charms; these then disappear into the forest and are never seen again. She has a suave and appealing voice, perhaps a bit bored since she's not all that interested in the protagonist heroine.
Audition Line 1: "It is a nice enough place, although I prefer the woodlands. Often, the men from the city are kind enough to visit me in my woods."

Ratatosk
Number of Lines: 30 - 50
Age: ~16
The squirrel of doom! Although small and cuddly, he will destroy the world and doom you all! With doom, and don't you forget it! A rather ineffective antagonist, Ratatosk has a squeaky voice and is probably best voiced by a female. He tries to sound bombastic, grandiose, and threatening, but just isn't very good at it.

Last year ATOTK was brought by a team of 17 persons. As far as I remember 50 persons took part at the nominations. It is pretty clear that some of the team members always vote for their game, which is not a crime, but with such a high number of team members and such low voting numbers it can actually influence the result.

That's true, but by the end of it, we only had around 4 regular people on the team (the rest became busy with real life, and most were no longer active in the adventure game community), so I really don't think we had 17 people nominating ATOTK for everything, heh. In terms of nominations, I'd say that games with higher profiles or games that become much-loved favourites tend to receive more nominations anyway. I'd personally like to see more discernment when people nominate games for particular categories, but it's not really surprising that people would nominate their favourite in every category (they, of course, would like to give that game the best chance of winning something).

Thanks for the feedback, blueskirt!
The glitches should be fixed in a week when Radiant gets back. Muggit's options should be still accessible by pressing esc.

You shouldn't need to save too often, just once before you set everything for each hero (that is, after the death of each hero), and then once just before each hero comes along (this is autosaved). It's five+ minutes before each hero shows up (though I believe Radiant made this longer), and it doesn't actually take that long to put everything in the right place - most of the time spent will be thinking about how to do this rather than actually doing it. Once you've set up everything, you can ask Muggit to send in the next hero so you don't have to wait. The clock is a good idea though.

You'll probably need to start from very basics - What an element is, what atoms are made of (protons, neutrons, electrons), how the periodic table is structured. Chemistry is all about movement of electrons as it is the movement of electrons that causes reactions to occur. The reason why electrons are transferred, or are shared between atoms is because the atoms want to achieve stability with a full outer shell of electrons. So you'll need to read a book that goes through the fundamentals of chemistry and how electrons form bonds. And as Gord said, atoms of each element are conserved in chemical reactions, so reaction equations must contain the same number of each element on each side of the arrow.

From there, organic chemistry is about compounds that mainly contain carbon and hydrogen atoms. A lot of the terms you labelled as 'chinese' are simply words assigned to describe the compounds and bonding. The bonding you'll come across in organic chemistry is 'covalent bonding' (that is, when electrons are shared between atoms), so you'll have to read up on covalent bonding to understand what single bonds, double bonds, and triple bonds are about (again, any basic chemistry book should cover this).

What might help is doing a flowchart to map out everything in a bit more order to sort everything out in your head. It probably feels very circular and confusing at the moment, but once you get the basics learnt you won't have so much trouble.

There should be lots of videos on the net, just that the tricky part is finding them. There should be a number of basic chemistry books with pictures though, to help you understand some of the things they are getting at.
#97
I'm not sure what kind of level of chemistry you have to study, but I found that chemistry at uni here in Australia is a lot of memory work anyway (well, with organic chemistry, the reaction mechanisms could be worked out, but it was simply easier to remember what how the reaction than to spend time working it out from scratch on the exam).

Textbooks are useful if you read through them slowly and write down key points to help you understand what is going on.

If you don't understand the basics, you should try and understand those fully because then you can reason out things that happen from there (ie. why the electrons transfer a certain way thus causing molecules to break or form)

http://www.organic-chemistry.org/ is good as a reference to organic reactions
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organic_chemistry Wiki has an overview, and lots of links at the bottom that are quite helpful too.
