Okay, I'm going to write out two horribly vague descriptions of songs and hope someone knows what I'm talking about.

1) Used in Ford - Destination Football adverts. Well known song, starts with temerous accordian, followed by some very nifty drum and whistle work, then bursts into a lively and oft-sung chorus.

2) I heard a snippet of this, and I'm intruiged. I know it's a fairly popular song, but I couldn't remember anything about it except it's someone who sounds highly like Micheal Caine (read: cockney) talking, punctuated by this chorus, and there as it least this line:
"........wot is known as, *chorus*"
The 'chorus' is two semi-melodic shouts. I can't really elaborate any further. I guess I could match them on cakewalk or something. That goes for both titles.

So if you can, provide titles, if you can't, feel free to mock my general lack of prowess concerning these matters.

General Discussion / I'm going away for a bit.

IRC. Internet Relay CHAT.

If anyone requires a log, like for example CJ or DGMacPhee, email me.

I am fed up with Annie's controlling and tormenting attitude. She tries to tell me what to talk about, what to not talk about, where to take my talk, what I can and cannot do. My actions in the channel. IRC itself, which is a bitter irony because no-one can tame conversation. She tries to control the current topics of conversation just because she doesn't like them (ie the hot topic of RO. So many from #AGS play of course people are going to talk!).

I understand etiquette. I also understand the limits of certain activities, which is why I do my damn best to stay inside of them. However, Annie appears to want to pounce on any slight breach I may (unintentionally) make. Quite frankly I have had enough of her stupid little needling remarks and her pointless sniping and her blasted insults, all the time, not matter how subtle. Anyone sensitive to being told what to do (I refer to migs and boyd especially, sorry if you don't want me to) tend to draw Annie's wrath. RobertEric, you are a fine debator and she does not deserve your help with the matter, nor can I figure out why you do, truth be told.

So, I am going to stay away from IRC and the forums for an indefinate period of time. Realistically this will probably range from a week to a month. I am quite, quite fed up of the treatment I receive just because I want to talk with people whom I regard as friends about topics I want to, or because I like adding definitions to roger (which I try and will continue to try to keep to PMs). Anyone knows that getting an unexpected response from the bot has a modicum of interest and quite often comedy.

But enough of this. I can be reached by my email, I will look at this topic but I will not reply, because I have just spent 40 minutes arguing in IRC about this very thing and I see no further point.

My regards to you all, until I next see you.

Have fun now, and don't forget to report back.

Okay. I have absolutely no idea why this would be. I've tried the different devices in the setup to no avail, I seem to recall disproving that the net was taking up my soundcard, and nothing else was running when playing the game... basically, I want my tunes, but they won't play.

This problem also occurs in RPGmaker2000, another game engine that uses MIDI.

Any suggestions?

General Discussion / This is rather good.

When I say rather good, that's something of an understatement.

Enjoy

Be sure to check it all out.

I have a printer. It connects via USB. There is nothing wrong with the USB port or cable and it shows in my devices list as [Generic USB- Lexmark X74]. However. When I install from CD it doesn't work, it just installs some files. When I try add printer, I get as far as selecting the port, where I can choose from three COM ports, one FILE and one LTP1. There is no USB port to choose there. My question is, how do I get the system to recognise that I have a USB port there (outside of the devices list)? If someone can help me I shall be able to install the printer and actually print off somewhat vital files like GCSE coursework and the like.

Thank you.

Yes, this marks one entire year spent in your company. So looking back, what's happened to me over the last 12 months?

Disclaimer: May not be entirely historically accurate.

8/8/2002: I join. A few weeks later I start a rather silly thread called 'The Simpsons: Bring it on'. They bought it on. After a rather heated argument with DGMacPhee fuelled by a misunderstanding, I resolve not to challenge the entirety of the forum again.

I wander around the forum for a couple of weeks more, sticking mainly to the Critic's lounge, gen gen and AGStalk boards, blissfully unaware that I'm probably pissing quite a few people off by posting inordinate amounts.

Sometime in early October: The first ideas for Tourist Trap start to grow. Cue newbish excitment, ignorance of the task and overenthusiasm. It would still make a good game, but until I can produce one very nice background a day, it's a long way off, folks.

Early November: Abandon all hope of ever making an AGS game. Wallow in self-pity. Start to take interest in sprite jam.

Mid-November: Enter sprite jam for the first time with a pitiful motor-driven blue cup. Lose, probably heavily. Undeterred, I keep entering, and make a regular habit of it. Start to link pictures with anonymizer alot.

Early December: First ideas for DROID start to materialise. Ambitiously forcast January 2003 as release date. Proceed with not doing much at all until Febuary. Achieve brief status as the creator of an in-joke (ERGO).

January: Nothing much happens.

February: First room for DROID finally done. Characters are already complete. Try to script, fail miserably, give up for a while.

March, April, May: Nothing much happens. At all. Really. Although I might have won my first sprite jam with my red hot chilli pepper. I also think I discovered #ags sometime during these months. Within 30 minutes of joining I am devoiced and banned from roger. Ho hum. I don't think Annie likes/d me.

June: I think it was somewhere around this time that I was recruited onto the Roger Foodbelly team as 'puzzle designer and proofreader'. I get to see the intro movies.

July: Start composing on a regular basis. Results gradually improve. Or so I'm told. Am promoted to joint project leader for Roger Foodbelly.

August: Realise I've now wasted an entire year with AGS and not had much to show for it. Start working on DROID in earnest. Current status: 32% done.

This may not be a particularly productive post in the grand scheme of things, but I thought it worth displaying. Anyone got champagne?

Chicane: Hot nights on the streets of Miami.

"The night's warm. Of course, in this neck of the woods that's hardly unusual, but tonight... tonight it's stifling. It's almost like the air is trying to crush the pedestrians on the street.
The street...
It's emptier than usual tonight. Guess the weather is keeping people inside. I look up, the squally clouds broiling overhead. They look like trouble.
I slip into a side alley, and approach the unassuming beige door behind the dustbins. There's water on the street.
With a sharp triple-tap on the wood I make my presence known. The alley behind me is lit up dully as the ID bar slides across with a grating sound. The eyes behind it crease into a grin.
"Hey, Bill, it's Chicane!"
Sitting down at a circular table opposite the dartboard, I nod to the barman for a glass of the usual.
Oh, and that's one thing I forgot to mention. Folks in my area of... business don't go waving their names around like confetti. You need an alias, a professional name. As a faded cocktail glass is deposited heavily next to my fedora on the table, I sip the alcohol with a pensive expression.
I'm a freelancer, and folks in this town call me Chicane."

Going for a film noir feel, comments and (constructive) criticism are welcome.
I've been thinking about turning this into a series of games, which I will start work on some time after finishing DROID (which is progressing nicely, for your information).
Like, say, Blackadder, the Chicane series will all feature the same character, but at different stages in history. This could make for some interesting changes in methods used, countries, jobs, clothing, items, etc. Also, the games will be set in various areas, with suitably, uh, suitable scenarios. I plan to cover the 1930's to the 1990's, with distinct prospects for a game set in the eighties as the second in the series already present.

However, one should not get ahead of oneself, so I'll start work on the others if the first should prove to be a hit.

Basically, I want the following scenario:

Player interacts with object. EGO moves to object, animation runs on object. Animation runs on player (at one point there will be two animations running), player moves to a different room, but not before the animation finishes. The object number is 1. From a very similar scenario earlier in the game, I have this script... it's near perfect, but I haven't the sufficient knowledge to change some of the variables (it wasn't done by me).

Quote// script for object2: Interact object
MoveCharacterBlocking(EGO, 82, 147, 1);
ObjectOn(0);
SetObjectView(0, 5);
character[EGO].loop=0;
character[EGO].frame=0;
AnimateObject (0, 0, 5, 0);
SetCharacterView(EGO, 6);
AnimateCharacter(EGO, 0, 3, 0);

while (IsObjectAnimating(0)==1){Wait(1);}
NewRoomEx(2, 125, 122);
ReleaseCharacterView(EGO);

Any help is gratefully accepted.

New signature. Thought it was of some significance as an achievement (don't know why? read the topic title).

Yes, it is advertising my game.
Yes, it is slightly faulty in two areas.
Yes, it may not look much.

But you try doing that without layers. I very nearly went insane.

Wonderful thing, the internet. Have fun .

Also, it's really easy, think about it and you won't need to ask for hints (which I won't answer anyway).

When life gets down, you can always rely on ducks.

Also, think of it as a metaphor for life. Should cheer some people up.

This doesn't just anger me, this leaves me absolutely incensed. This link is the reaction posted to this website.

Not that I have anything else to add to this post, but I feel it should be looked at. Namely, the posts of OneManArmy.

That the japanese border the fine line between genius and insanity.
Incredible.

Edit: New link.

If this goes ahead. Authorities recently shut down a webpage that was going to host a competition: hack 6000 websites in 6 hours. However, it is believed that so many hackers got wind of the plan that they will go ahead anyway.

Just as a precaution, I suggest all webmasters here make a backup of their site/s.

Critics' Lounge / 3D tutorials etc

Following the increasing trend of AGSers dabbling in the black arts 3D, I thought of here when I stumbled across this site on my daily web cruising. I thought some people would enjoy and benefit from it, so.... here it is. LGM and Xahdoom might be particuarly interested.

Right, the problem I have is as the player leaves the first room, an animation is shown of the character going through a hatch, then the hatch closing behind them, then the room changes to room2, as one would expect. However, after getting that done (with alot of help from the lovely folk at #ags on IRC), there remains a problem.
Just before the animation plays, the character sprite jerks suddenly upwards in a straight vertical line for less than a second, and then everything goes ahead normally. I shall post my script here:

Quote// script for hotspot2: Player stands on hotspot
DisableHotspot(2);

MoveCharacterBlocking(EGO, 205, 73, 1);
ObjectOn(0);
SetObjectView(0, 5);
AnimateObject (0, 0, 5, 0);
SetCharacterView(EGO, 6);
AnimateCharacter(EGO, 0, 3, 0);

while (IsObjectAnimating(0)==1){Wait(1);}
NewRoomEx(2, 95, 125);
ReleaseCharacterView(EGO);

Incidentally, all my sprites are fine. Neither BOYD, Annie, or Def could help me with this, even after I sent two of them the game itself. If you think you can help, but would be better off looking directly at the game, I can send it in two zips amounting to just over a megabyte. I have tried changing the last variable on move char blocking to 0, but that didn't seem to do any good.

Any ideas?

Recently in my emails I've been getting the header:

I doubt I can do anything about it, but it seems strange that after well over 5000 emails sent to me from the forums that it's suddenly changed... any ideas?

If not, you can settle for pointing and laughing at me for having to use AOL.
