This sounds very intriguing. I absolutely love stage magic and have studied it quite a lot since a stage magician also plays a major role in my own game-in-production.
I played the demo, and apart from the Poser'ish look of the characters, which can hardly be avoided, it seemed very professional (perhaps you should work on your camera placement in Poser though - the character is closer to camera in the front view than the back view, and the camera angle from the front almost makes the shoes look like he's standing  on his toes).
The intro cutscene was very nicely made, the comic book style reminded me a bit of Max Payne, and the way you turn the door into part of the background looked very stylish. The story starts off rather clichéd, but I hope that it will develop in unpredictable ways - also I hope we get a chance to use some real magic tricks.

Good luck. And hats off for not announcing the game before the demo was done!

The other code is in the Room Script, I assume? Then also put "int tupu;" in the top of the room script.

However, I wonder if you need the int at all? Since you're switching between two object view, why not check for the current view instead?

Code: ags
if (object[0].View == 8) {
   object[0].SetView(7);
   }
else if (object[0].View == 7) {
   object[0].SetView(8);
   }

Edit: Are you animating the door at all (I don't see any object[0].Animate command)? If you're just switching between two sprites, one opened, one closed, it would be easier just to use object[0].Graphic to change it.

There may be other problems, but for now it looks like a capitalization error. It should be object[0] not Object[0].

Edit: Does the code actually look like that, or is "int tupu" declared somewhere else, and you just put it there for this post? If this is the actual code, of course the first statement will always be true while the second will never run.

I don't remember the ending of BJ3 perfectly, but as of episode 5 that question still hasn't been answered. Don't worry, you're not missing out on anything, it's part of the larger story arc of the whole series.

You could give Telltale's Sam & Max games a try. Most people around here found them shorth and lacking compared to the original, I rather liked them as did a lot of other reviewers.

Well, assuming that the rest of the game is paused while the inventory is open, it shouldn't make much difference at all. Besides, pretty much the only big slowdowns from stuff running in repeatedly_execute is graphics related (such as drawing/modifying large sprites every frame).

Did you check "Handle inventory clicks in script" on the General Settings screen?

Advanced Technical Forum / Re: Crossword

Drop the idea of a GUI, it would severely limit the size of the crossword. I recommend drawing the crossword grid entirely with RawDraw, possibly, but not necessarily copying the sprite to a graphical overlay in case you need other stuff going on in the background.
The grid itself would be handled in a large struct, which would also store the correct letter for each field. All fields would be the same size, so click detection in the grid would be very easy.

As for letter entry method, I think you should allow both the methods suggested by R4L, 1) to allow the player to use mouse only 2) because any PC game designer not supporting keyboard for text entry should be shot. It would be great if you could work out a method (maybe by clicking on the clue field first) to enter the entire word without having to click on the individual letter fields in it.

Quote from: LimpingFish on Fri 16/03/2007 23:42:11the term "bad adventure game" has become a bit of an oxymoron.

Don't you mean "pleonasm"?

And I totally agree with Rui's latest post. GK3 is a flawed masterpiece whereas Post Mortem, Black Mirror and Still Life are just plain flawed.

Edit: And in response to LimpingFish's comment on the gameplay, I seem to have been one of the few people who solved the cat moustache puzzle without a walkthrough in about 10 minutes. My only major grievance was that disappearing bridge at the end.

There's hardly been any adventure games worth your time released since 2000. None whatsoever if you expect Grim Fandango standard. And even if there's been a few decent methadone kind of games to keep the adventure junkies from going cold turkey, they're all mind-numbingly derivative. And the couple of game that actually tried to improve the genre such as Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy or Dreamfall usually suffer in the gameplay department.
You'd be better off getting some of the classic adventures from the 90's that still run on XP - possibly after patching - like Rui suggests. And for newer games, buy a few truly excellent games from other but similar genres, such as Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, GTA: San Andreas or Hitman: Blood Money. In my opinion they are closer to what adventure games would have been like, if adventure fans weren't a bunch of whiny reactionaries.

Quote from: Kroms on Thu 15/03/2007 08:04:46Can someone using AGS enhance the graphics to the point of being like The Curse of Monkey Island?

Developers using AGS can enhance the graphics of their own game to be as good as or better than the ones CoMI, considering that CoMI used 640x480 resolution with 8-bit color, while and AGS supports up to 800x600 with 32-bit color.

Unless you mean actual time travel - like Back to the Future or Day of the Tentacle - I think it would relate mostly to story rather than gameplay. True time travel makes for great puzzles though.

As for something I've never seen in games before... Abortions! I never saw, performed or played the role of an abortion in any game, ever. You could play an aborted fetus waking up in the garbage bin behind the hospital, and your quest would be a grand adventure to find your mother. Damn this a great idea, or well... good luck to your marketing department.

Song: A Song From Under the Floorboards by Magazine
Comments: The lyric "my irritability keeps me alive and kicking" really resonates with me for some reason. I haven't studied the origin of the lyrics, but I always imagined it to be influenced by Kafka. There's some lovely cover versions of it, my favorite being the one by Strange Boutique.
How I discovered it: Morrissey performed a cover of it at a concert I attended in Sweden last year.

Fun fact: Someone synced the music with clips from Phantom of the Opera and put the video on youtube. At least it's a chance to hear the album version which is a bit different from the performance posted above.

I found a Simply Red compilation album in the trash a few days ago, and after reading this thread and therefore giving it a quick listen, I rather feel like returning it. No, it's not awful, in the same way that Stevie Wonder isn't terrible, but that still doesn't mean I would listen to his music if I had a choice.
Let's put it like this. Mick Hucknall was one of many later famous Manchester musicians attending the now legendary 1976 Sex Pistols gig. The others went on to form influential post-punk and new wave bands like The Smiths, Joy Division, Buzzcocks, Magazine and The Fall, Hucknall ended up in Simply friggin Red... what went wrong?

I think most people around here either use PhotoShop, Paintshop Pro or freeware programs with similar functionality. I haven't used Corel Photo Paint since the mid-nineties, but from what I remember it was very similar to Paintshop Pro, so it should be fine for the job.

At least make sure that you get paid up front, Dave - and avoid any personal expenses to be refunded later.

Awesome that it worked without further changes. Glad to be of service.

Well, I would recommend downloading InnoSetup and reading the documentation for the program. When you create an installer with InnoSetup, the actions performed by the installer is determined by a script file. Most actions are set up for you by the wizard, so you normally don't have to edit the script manually. But if you want to use special functions, like this one, you must add them by hand before compiling the installer.

Look up "INI" in the index of the InnoSetup help file for more info. I'm guessing it should be something like:
Quote
[INI]
Filename: "{app}\acsetup.cfg"; Section: "misc"; Key: "datadir"; String: "{drive:{src}}"

I'm not sure that the String value at the end is correct (I *think* it should add the drive letter for the cd drive you install from), if not, you'll have to play around with it a bit and check the help file for other possible parameters.
#2140
InnoSetup should be perfectly capable of making those changes to the .cfg file.

Edit: A small addition. The function I was thinking of in InnoSetup is made for editing .ini files, but I don't see why it should't be able to add a line to the .cfg if you input the right filename.
