Could you please post example screenshots? Otherwise 1) It's rather difficult to tell which resolution would fit your art style and 2) This doesn't belong in the Critics Lounge. If your characters are in a different style from the backgrounds you might want to include them in the screenshot as well.

This is seriously weird. Until now I've had no problem with the Snow/Rain plugin, but as of Final 2 it has stopped working. It works fine with a compiled game using v. 2.71.888 but not on 2.71.894.

Edit: Ah, now I know why I couldn't reproduce the rain plugin issue until now. It seems that if you have an old acwin.exe file in your game directory, the game will be compiled with an executable for that version rather than that of the current editor version. So for a couple of builds I've kept compiling the game using the old .exe. Sorry for the confusion Trisk.

This looks great, and reminds me a hell of a lot of a location from Dark Seed. Especially the layout and the choice of color. Unless this was a direct influence in the first place it might offer some inspiration: http://www.mobygames.com/game/amiga/dark-seed/screenshots/gameShotId,32314/

Quote from: Pumaman on Fri 09/12/2005 19:15:15These "features" were originally meant to allow for clever tricks so that you could use an 8-bit background in a 16-bit game for instance; however now I think they're just annoying and counter-intuitive, so I'll modify the editor to automatically convert all backgrounds to the game colour depth on import.

But will you still be able to set the color depth to 16-bit, import your backgrounds and non-alpha sprites, then switch back to 32 and import the rest? I use this trick a lot to avoid wasting file size on 32-bit backgrounds.

Quote from: voh on Fri 09/12/2005 18:58:41Now that they've got VUG's blessing, why not charge 30 dollars for it?

I'm pretty sure that VU have put up very strict limits for what they can and can't do with the license, as they did with Tierra/AGDI. Most likely this is also the reason for the change of title (excluding the actual words "King's Quest").
#2606
Heh, when splat44 started the thread the news about the license wasn't on the linked page yet (only references to VUs court battles with Valve and other financial issues from 2004). So in the end a pretty much useless post ended up providing us with some great news. Neat.

So who would the nomination committees consist of? People who had won that category previous years? Or anyone who had bothered actually playing everything that came out during the year?

Quote from: ManicMatt on Wed 07/12/2005 10:55:31In Broken Sword 3, i was stuck for ages on the bottle wine puzzle in a cellar. The bottles would make a different noise every time you pulled one out, so I spent ages writing down different combinations to get the same sound for each bottle pulled. It drove me mad because there didn't seem to be a combination. And there wasn't. It was just revolution's attention to detail, by having different bottle pulling sound effects. (and yes, I had to use a walkthrough there)

Spoiler
Actually there's a much easier solution, which took me about two minutes to figure out. The wine bottles come from different countries, and you just pull them in the order of the countries that the templars came through or something (I believe it's entered in the diary/log thing). I think what gives it away is that there's a bottle of Israeli wine, which doesn't seem like the obvious thing to have in an old French wine cellar.

Edit:

Quoteyeah I know from seeing the walkthrough, I was just trying not to ruin the puzzle for others, it being not as old as most of the games we talk about!

I misread this: "It drove me mad because there didn't seem to be a combination. And there wasn't." As meaning that there wasn't a proper solution to the puzzle. I realize now that you meant there wasn't a pattern to the sounds.

Quote from: SteveMcCrea on Thu 08/12/2005 06:32:09The Young Ones - very funny but very dated early eighties show about 4 students. Has musical numbers, including a Madness appearance.

Young Ones was the first thing that sprung to my mind as well (even though I'm not British). It's very surreal, rude and absolutely hilarious - with some great musical guest performances. Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmonson went on to do the show Bottom in the early nineties which wasn't quite as original but nevertheless quite funny.

Also, although it's a movie rather than a tv show, you must watch Withnail & I.

Quote from: Rui "Shodan" Pires (a divine AI) on Fri 02/12/2005 22:27:00I haven't rested it myself, but I've read reports of the snow/rain plugin not working with the newest betas - since beta 4, I believe. Normally I'd ask this of Scorpiorus, but he's been MIA for quite a while now. So I was wondering... CJ, I don't suppose you could see what caused it to stop working, and maybe, I dunno, if it's unrelated to the changes... change it back?

I didn't have any issues with the plugin in either of the betas and just compiled the game with final version, and the plugin does what it's supposed to. Has anyone but Trisk actually experienced this problem?

I believe the correct name is "Vitruvian Man".

Quote from: Pumaman on Fri 25/11/2005 19:42:02Although the string length limit has now been removed, a lot of other things in AGS were sort of built around the old limit -- therefore, it will take time for every feature to be updated to take unlimited length strings.

Yes, this was what I thought. I'd better stick to my textbreaking code then instead of waiting for this to be implemented. Thanks for the reply.

I must admit I still don't really understand the "inifinite length" of Strings and how it can be used for anything but storing data. Every time I try do anything with them, such as displaying or rawdrawing them, I still run into the old string limit?

Quote from: ildu on Wed 23/11/2005 22:21:26Anyway, it really makes you wonder if the germans (or any other dubbing nation) has ever heard the real voices of our supposedly most famous folk.

Seeing as kl4Uz has a Leningrad Cowboy as his avatar, I would assume so  ;D

Quote from: buloght on Wed 23/11/2005 21:17:49There was a girl a few years back, a first year. Two guys took an arm from one the bodies and put it in the girls bed under the covers, apparently with the hand sticking out. The first sight of the girl (by her friends) after she went to her room that night was where she was sitting on her cupboard chewing on the arm. She had a blank expression.

Classic urban legend:Ã,  http://www.ecampustours.com/campuslife/urbanlegendsoncollegecampuses.aspx

QuoteCadaver Arm
This legend is about a medical student who secretly takes an arm of a corpse.Ã,  One night, he decides to hide the arm in his girlfriend's room as a practical joke.Ã,  He and his roommate wait in another dorm room for the girl to start screaming.Ã,  After an hour passes and nothing happens, the two medical students decide to go into the girlfriend's room.Ã,  They find the girl sitting in the corner of the room with a glazed expression on her face eating the arm.Ã,  The practical joke had driven her mad.

This legend has also never been proven true.

Create a background double the width of the screen and rawdraw to the off-screen part. You will need to lock the viewport to avoid the screen scrolling if you have characters on the screen at the same time.
#2618
You will have to call IsTimerExpired in the Repeatedly_Execute. If you call it in the First Time player enters screen script it will only check once, in the very first cycle (and thus never get to 3000).

I thought the whole point of Windows and DirectX was that you didn't need "low level access to your hardware"?

Quote from: Edmundo on Sat 22/10/2005 00:23:28Yep, I thought of that, though it's still kind of weird moving the cursor around... I could have a fake character that you could move to edit the text, but it's quite some work, you know.

I'm not sure I understand the problem. You mean that you want to be able to click anywhere in the previously written text and insert/edit new text there, like you would in notepad? Yes. I suppose that would take some fancy coding but it's not impossible. As for the fake character, I don't know what you're referring to.
