Messages - Ghormak

This is obviously not that Castlevania-ish, because I don't really know Castlevania at all. I just listened quickly to the music for the C64 version, and then made this:

http://www.agagames.com/ghormak/sids/castle.sid (original sid version)

Edit:
And now I realise I completely overlooked rule nr 2. Oh well.

If anything, we should make more AGI versions of point and click games. I love AGI.

With neat LED display mounted onto case which is supposed to show temperatures for processor, HD and system overall, changed with switchable button.

There's three of them, and each one has a label, CPU, HDD and SYS.
Now, It's pretty obivious that they're someway connected to the LED. But they doesn't look like they could be plugged anywhere!

Putting 2 and 2 together, I'd say those are thermometers.

But I don't know how to set them up, sorry. Maybe you just get to put them anywhere you like and then... jibble with it.

Time... is UP! (sorry Eldkatt!)

Good efforts all, I liked this contest. Even if they were all good, I didn't have to think too long to decide on a winner. Call me biased, but I simply adore the winner because it sounds like somethings that could have come right out of Deus Ex. So the winner is...

ProgZmax!Ã,   (yes, you were right. The mp3 version is inferior to the awesomeness that is XM. Delightfully Deus Ex-ish.)

Now it's your turn to pm Newbie McNew to find out what projects of his still need music!

You're right about hype. I'm sorry, I should have used a more neutral word, like "interest" or "attention".

I think more restrictions would be a good thing. Maybe especially the number of rooms, because games with more rooms tend to be longer, and thus take more time to write. And more rooms = more backgrounds to draw. I think these two things (writing & planning the game and drawing the backgrounds) are generally the most time-consuming parts of making a game.

edit: By rooms I mean room files in AGS. If someone thinks they absolutely need more than the allowed amount of rooms, they can always stretch the rules and use scrolling rooms.

Hooray, we managed to go all the way through with this without religious debate! And it yielded some funny pictures too!

This week one entry stood above all the others, and that was DGMacphee's Last Supper. He wins!

How could I not welcome a fellow G back?

Welcome! GAGS, unite!

I've gotten so bored with adventure games lately, I mainly look for one thing:

Innovation.

I want to see something I haven't seen before.

There's a point to it other than getting comments.

Generating hype.

It's up to the reader of the threads if they want to post comments or not, and I'd personally like it if people were honest when commenting on the games.

Quote from: SteveMcCrea on Thu 12/08/2004 06:07:25float_to_int() rounds to the nearest value. Previously (despite what I said on another thread) it would round to the nearest value if the number was positive, and just do something stupid if the number was negative. Maybe that was exacerbating your problem, Ghormak?

Actually not, I was only overlooking something that now seems painfully obvious to me.
Every time I use float_to_int() it should be only with positive numbers, but I can imagine one or two occasions where negative ones will appear. This will be most useful! Thanks!

Edit:
On second thought, it probably WAS that negative number error that caused the engine to hang, but it's moot anyway because my script wouldn't have behaved like I wanted it to even if the plugin had been errorfree. :)

Whoops, nevermind! The problem was just stupidity on my behalf. It works splendidly.

Not that the insults matter anymore.

I think he lost the argument right there.

Ah, so THERE'S the documentation for the math plugin! You really should have included all this info in the zip file. ;)

Anyway, sorry for dragging this topic back to life, but I have a question regarding the plugin. Is it just me or does it handle negative numbers badly?

I have in my script something like this:

while(GetWalkableAreaAt(x, y) > 0)Ã,  {
Ã,  here a lot of stuff happens, but the problematic lines are these:
Ã,  wx = fadd(wx, ix);
Ã,  wy = fadd(wy, iy);
}

(I make x and y normal ints from wx and wy for checking the walkable area, naturally.)

Now this works very nicely when ix and iy both are positive numbers, but if one of them is negative AGS crashes on me with this message:

"Script appears to be hung (15001 while loop iterations without an update)"

Is there something I might have overlooked, or is there a problem with the plugin?

Thanks.

What is a Photoshop Phriday?

Photoshopping isn't drawing a completely new image -- It's editing images to create a new image, such as editing one image or combining several images.

Also, you don't have to specifically use Photoshop -- Paint Shop Pro, MSPaint, or any other programs can be used.

See this link:
http://www.somethingawful.com/photoshop/

And for other examples, see here:
http://www.worth1000.com/

The two above websites should give a fair idea of what is involved.

It is time for us to think about the spiritual things in life. I want all you heathens out there to read the Bible!! And then photoshop it... with adventure games!! Thusly the topic is:

The Bible

Here's a quick one to get you started:

Hooray for victory!

Newbie McNew is making another game, and once again you're the designated musician. He/she is making a serioius spy game set in the near future, and is begging you to write the main theme. It doesn't have to be long, just something that will play in the main menu, something that will really set the mood for an action packed spy thriller filled with intrigue, excitement and explosions!

Hurry up! The game is going to be released on August 15th, which coincidentally means that you have exactly one week to finish the tune!

(Note: This is not real. Except for that part about you having only one week before judgement day. So get to work, and have fun!)

QuoteQuite frankly, I'm sick of always having to kill things, be it with a gun, or with an army, or with a sword, or with magic, or with my feet. I don't have a problem with it but I want to do something else sometimes (and not just fit blocks into other blocks).

That sums up what I feel about games today so perfectly I almost suspect you of stealing my thoughts and writing them down for fun and profit!

Excellent article. I want more varied games too. Most of all, I'd like scary games that doesn't involve you killing hundreds of zombies using an arsenal of weapons big enough to kill... well, hundreds of zombies.

QuoteIf all the movies were pornos or snuff films, you can bet films wouldn't enjoy the exposure they do.

Heh, again I accuse you of mindreading! Remember that John Carmack once said "stories in video games are like stories in pornos. They're just there, they don't have to be good"? I remembered that yesterday when I was thinking about Doom 3, and had a little thought: "iD's (and other developers') mindless shooters are to the game industry what pornos are to the movie industry. They may contain pretty sights (ahem), but are unlikely to be enjoyed by the general public as genuine entertainment."

Oh man. This game would be so much scarier if there were approx. 50 times less monsters in it, and those that remained would be five times stronger. As it is now, it's not scary at all. It's just "enter room, shoot everything that is in room (god forbid there would be a room with no monsters at all!), yawn, wait for monsters that teleport into room and then shoot them, go to next room". And the monsters! Each new monster introduced is more annoying than the last one! Spiders? Flying babies? Not scary. Just very, very, very annoying. This game had so much potential, but I just don't think it's great at all.

So my one line review would be "Way too many monsters, but damn it's pretty."
