System Shock 2 is fantastic, I recently played it through again and enjoyed it immensely.

I tried System Shock 1 once, but sadly I couldn't get into it. The heavily pixelated textured 3d look is one that hasn't aged well in my eyes. It's strange how the extremely low-poly characters in SS2 don't bother me at all.

Since nobody has mentioned it yet, I'll mention BioShock. A game in development by the team behind the System Shock games. Read some of the Ken Levine interviews, it sounds very interesting.

I on the other hand sincerely agree with 2ma2, scotch, eric, Helm and Erenan.

I have to say that sounds like a cool idea, Erenan. Exploring is always cool. I have vague idea in my mind of a game I'd like to make that would be all about exploring, complete with rivalry between other explorers, observation of the natives, dysentery, impressive beard growing and exchanging of 19th century witticisms.

This is why I like this thread.

Quote from: Mordalles on Tue 05/09/2006 19:59:18and secondly, i am really looking forward to your competently designed game.Ã,  ;)

Mordalles, please stop with the "do better yourself! ;) ;) ;)" thing, it's completely irrelevant how much talent a person does or doesn't have.

Nice post, LimpingFish, I agree completely.

Atleast we still have 8 other gaming conventions.

That's pretty much what it's worth, I'd say. It's not a flawless game, but if you find it for cheap it should be well worth the purchase. It has some great moments.

All Helm (and earlwood, whose posts you all seem to completely disregard) is saying is that what you're doing with content ratings is completely unnecessary.

Nobody is forcing anybody to do anything. Nobody is attacking anyone.

Games are supposed to entertain. Yes.

You should know what kind of entertainment you're getting. Y... es. I guess. If you want.

But you know what, that's what reviews, word of mouth or even a synopsis on the game's box/website is for! Not stickers that say WARNING: SEX!

Yes.

Here, Helm and earlwood. You can have my 2 cents.

It's not you, it's what you write.

Look at your first post here! You dismiss an entire genre, a genre that has many brilliant games, on the grounds that "typing is SOOOOO annoying!"Ã,  I mean what the hell!

By text adventures i meanÃ,  pure text- no graphics at all, no music. A vry unrealistic adventure.

You mean like... books?

Preposterous!

Does a thread not interest you? I have a revolutionary new idea for you, Hammerite: Don't post in it!

It works for me!

I thought the caption scotch and Disco have a romantic walk along the peninsula didn't make much sense. So I corrected the image.

This tune was designed by robots to make you happy.

Maybe that would be wise. maaark, since you both posted recently and participated in this compo (with a splendid little tune), would you like to take over?

I don't see how typing correct English sentences into the parser helps suspend disbelief much... the great thing about the parser is that it's so flexible. You can type complex sentences that work nicely the way you intended if you really want to, but you can also simplify and the game will understand what you mean.

You don't type "Please computer, I would like walk through the doorway to the north". You don't even type "go north". You type "n".

So I agree with SteveMcCrea, if the intent is blatantly obvious, why not allow the verb 'use'?
Though I must say, I can't think of any situation where I have used the verb 'use' in an IF. I probably have though, since I tend to choose the words that require the least typing. 'Get' instead of 'take', 'turn off' instead of 'extinguish', and of course the various abbreviations commonly found in IF games.

Time for judgement!

A wide variety of tunes! I like that. It's a good thing I get to judge these based on how well they fit the theme, rather than overall quality/likeability, because that would be hard to judge.

Bearing that in mind, I'm deciding this one's winner is...

Tomas, because that's the one I can best imagine working as a title theme! Whee!

If you mean the new (well, new-ish) Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, then yes, it is quite nice. I found it a little tedious towards the end, but if you can find it for cheap it's well worth playing.

It's pretty creepy and scary, and it manages to be so without resorting to screaming things jumping out at you.

In this week's battle, I'm going to steal and modify a topic from an earlier contest.

What if a game character had a TV show? Seriously, what if! Ask yourself that question and make a 30 second long (+/- 5 seconds or so) theme tune for this show!

Perhaps you'd like to write the theme to "Archaeology with Dr Jones"?
Or maybe the sitcom "That's My Guybrush"!
There's always educational shows, like "Roger Wilco's Cleaning Tips" and the series of instructional videos "Proper Police Conduct" by Sonny Bonds.

Or anything else! Go crazy!
