Yeah, I've played that. Not that old, I think it's 2001-2003. Nothing even close to old LucasArts classics, but I congratulate them foe the effort. I played it in hebrew.. I hear the english version was a big success in France. They've also made a sequel, somethign about travelling back in time to France during the 20's.

Great animation Xadhoom. The only thing that felt awkward was the pose in the end of the animation, it looks too arched, imo. Can't wait to see it as a sprite! :)

Btw, happy birthday!

I like it, the last line especcially, it's powerful. Keep it up :)

I guess it all depends on what service they are advertising. :D
Maybe this could be joined with the Help Offering Icons, like a link next to each icon. Of course, there may be people who dont want/have time to help anyone, but just want to have that protfolio for future reference :).

It just dawned on me, after long searches through people's old post in order to get an idea about their work, that it would be useful in there was a section in the profile with links to some examples of the person's work. Although some people have websites, and some have games that they have made to show their abilities, they seems to be a minority.
It could be something simple like links to art/music/writing/posts/etc..

What do you think?

I'd like to sign up for story writing. If theres a team looking for a writer, i'd be glad to join :).

Wouldn't that simply be:

dialog 0:// dialog script file
@S  // dialog startup entry point
guard: Oh good, your awake.
return
@1  // option 1
guard: My names John. I'm a security guard here at the club.
return
@2  // option 2
guard: Were in the basement of the club right now. Do you remember anything from before?
christian: No I just woke up a second ago in that little room. How did I get in there?
guard: You were upstairs before with some of your friends I guess when these two men approached you.
guard: Now I was standing around at the time talking to a friend of mine but I started to notice them acting a bit strange to you, like you knew them and they were there to kill you or something.
guard: I dunno. All I do know is a few seconds after they approached you one of them grabbed the back of your jacket and dragged you through the crowd and down the stairs to this hallway.
guard: When I saw that I followed them down here. It took me a minute to get through the crowd but on my way down the stairs they were heading up. When I got to the backroom you were sprawled out on the floor unconcious.
christian: Holy shit...
guard: Yeah man...so I've just been standing around here waiting for you to wake up.
christian: Thanks a lot. I appreciate it.
guard: No problem
option-off 2
goto-dialog 1
@3  // option 3
guard: Anytime man.
stop

And yeah, topics with one option dont ever show the options.
#129
For your first issue, could you give us the exact script for both dialogs, since by all you've said I cant find a reason for it not to work. Perhaps make sure you haven't used both the return and the goto-dialog X in the option thats supposed to get you to the other dialog, and that you've checked the "Show" boxes in the second dialog
For the second question, using option-off X should do the trick.

?

Anyway, as for the topic, it varies for me aswell, this weekend I was online almost all the time working on a story, and after that taking a rest. It all depends on whats going on at school also, if we have any big tests and such.

I could think of something and see if it gains interest, we just need the right people around posting ;).

I'm all for the idea. I myself have printed out all the GTDs, but some of the images are missing unfortunately. They could be saved on the hosting server so that we're sure they won't dissapear. Btw, it's about time for another GTD, don't you think? :)

I haven't seen Barcik around for a while, i'll try contact him by Icq and see what he thinks.

Btw, apart from the GTDs there were a few independant discussion threads that were also very useful. I'll edit in a bit with a list of those I bookmarked.

P.s. I can't get on www.adventuredevelopers.com at the moment.

[edit]
Here they are (I can't find some of them, probably a broken link problem):

Romance between game characters, can it be done
Voice acting or not voice acting?
What do you expect from a good GUI?
what is missing from most games.
Whoa... Do I even LIKE adventures
~ The future of multiplayer adventure games ~

And the GTDs (by date):

Game theory discussion
GTD: What's wrong with adventure games?
GTD: Minority characters in adventure games
GTD: giving personality to characters
GTD: Backgrounds and "mise en scene"
GTD: Creating Atmosphere
GTD (sort of): Facade
GTD: Media Analyses of Games

edit: How ironic, I forgot this one ^_^

Look, even if they still make over a million, think about it.

A major fooball player (any kind, it's irrelevant) can make millions in a single year, but their useful time span is fairly small and the risks are huge for their health and well-being. Many will play for some years and retire for the rest of their life.

Now, are you telling me that even though they made this their life for decades, focusing on nothing else and risking so much, they don't deserve to be able to make all of the money they'll need for their entire life in a period of 3-10 years and then retire? Training/working for 12 hours a day every day, eating only the healthiest foods, getting injured, and then getting taxed 70% because they make too much?

I see no reason why someone shouldn't be able to give it their all and get paid for it. You probably scoff at entertainers, but the money they make will only allow them to live lavishly for as long as they're popular, most will need to spread those millions over their lifetime. High incomes are almost always involved with high risks or sacrifices.

And once again, if people will give it to them it's not their fault for getting it (if they're honest).
I don't scoff at entertainers, though it does seem ridiculous at times that big stars get paid 70 million per picture ;). Basically, I'm not saying taxes should be that high (I don't think they were ever 70%), and there is nothing wrong with making a lot of money, I'm just saying that taxes affect people who earn more money less than they affect others. I don't know how the whole football system works, so I don't know how much they are taxed, and I see your point about the risk in their job and their need in the money to provide for themselves in the future in case of injury.

Furthermore, the government wastes more money than any rich person ever will. I trust myself to do the right thing with my money multitudes more than I'd trust any elected official.
Now with this I totally agree. Government corruption might be going on with anyone in office, since, as Darth said before, people don't tend to trust politicans. I remember when I was in a camp in summer, we were touring outside the building where the different minister's and their departments are, and someone made a crack about how you can tell who's corrupt and who isn't by the number of air conditioners they have hanging outside their office (some had 1, some 2, and some none). It was funny, even if unbased :P.

Funny, I was never really that much into politics until this thread came along. A bit more reading around and I'll get straght A's (100's) in citizenship class next year) ;).

Sharky - hehe, thanks for the note. ;)

P.s. this is one of the most active threads I've seen. Heh, I guess I've found something I agree with poop about- this thread is getting very popular.

Righto, I've just watched part of the first debate, and just from that, I am sure Kerry would make a much better president. You might think someone from israel would prefer the canditate who blindly supports israel, i know several israelis who do, but I think it'd be much better for america to try and keep good terms with both israel and arab countries and/or palestinians. If anything, it might make them less bitter and help our country even more.
I have an uncle in america who I'd better as who he's voting for, though I'm quite sure he won't vote for bush, as last time he voted against him too.
So then, enough about israel ;).

actually, escargot, you should get your facts right. My parents are getting taxed 52% right now. Think of what Kerry will do. I know alot about kerry despite my age

If, in the future, I were to become rich and successfull, I'd gladly pay more taxes than others since despite everything that sucks about this place, I still care about my country.
shbaz has a point of course, but lets do the math, 52% (lets say 60%, assuming kerry raises taxes) of 650k = 260k a month. In 4 months, they make over a million dollars. In one year, over 3 million. Make your own conclusions.

QuoteJohn Kerry:
-wants to ban the pledge of allegiance in schools because it has "god" in it
I didn't quite know what that is either, though I heard of it, but after a quick look around the web, I found out the part about god wasn't even there originally. read this for more on that. With all the different religions and atheists aswell, 'under god' is quite controversial and those who don't believe in god have every right not to agree with it. Don't know where you heard Kerry wants to ban it, so I won't argue, but there's a good chance he just wants to remove what wasn't there in the first place.

Quote
"I am appauled. It's appauling." How could kerry even think of saving polar bears, caring for the environment, and making sure the earth doesn't fall apart after all man has done to it, when America's oil supply is so low and there is absolutely no possible way to replace the oil!! How could he be so selfish? ::)

- Wants to develop a plan to get all able-minded americans into college. I like the idea, but we just dont have the money for that, and the ttax burden would take more away from america than college puts in. Jobs requiring diplomas wont pay as much anymore, because everyone would have a degree.
You don't have the money to get people who have the potential to be brilliant eduacted in colleges? So, only the rich should be allowed education, and the cycle of success will continue? This makes changing your social position much harder, and as you say your dad is from a normal family, wouldn't you want people like him to be able to to progress in society? I am reminded of the age of feodalism (if I were to take it to the extrme of course), when the 'society class' you were born in (nobleman or lower class) was the class you had to live in all your life.

-Wants to end all of the nuke-building in america. I feel safe in america knowing we are the only country with hundreds of nukes to back us up. I couldnt sleep easy without them.
You sleep well because america has nuclear research going on? I will agree it's important for science, but the fact that it still is dangerous to america isn't at all calming. Ever heard of chernobyl? Obviously people who are working on these things are more careful now, but nevertheless, these things happen.

edit: Whoa, there sure were a lot of replies while I was typing this.

General Discussion / Re: Best free webhosting
Thu 07/10/2004 20:48:44
:o You know, I just realised I've been searching for a perfect free hosting site for years, and i do mean years, and then, out of the blue, at least 3 great looking hosting services! With my long serches through the sea of hosting providers, I found that there is always a catch, most commonly that .zip or .rar files aren't allowed, or there is a file size limit that gets in the way. However, sitesled clearly states there is no file size limit, and the other two don't like they have such restrictions either. Where were these gems? :P

As for payed hosting, someone once pointed me to a really cheap one, only about 3 buck it was I think, and with very good terms, though no domain name. I never really sought after a domain though ;). I can't find it atm, and thise free ones look better anyway.

edit: As always, I knew there must be a catch. Advantage host is for UK residents only. It just asks for postal code and house number though, I bypassed that easily, however, instead of ads, you need to earn 'points' to keep your site, by registering for some free prize draws etc. These, consequently, are for UK residents only. :/

Well, there's still a week left, but I'm sure a few more days will be welcome.
I've been busy with h/w and stuff for school. I'll try squeeze this in :D.

Think of it as some sort of talent-scouting.
Like those reality tv-shows, which have auditions for potential performers, and help them making a career. As lame as that kind of entertainment may be, the fact remains that hundreds of good performers would remain unseen around the world without it.

Now this sounds interesting. As you say, talent scouting type shows can be rather lame, but generally they are beneficial to the participants and the public. Also, the fact that graphically "impaired" games, or games that don't excell in other areas, such as a game with a concpet that seems dull, but the story evolves into something intriguing and emotional, or the puzzles are brilliant, etc, can get a lot more recognition than usual. Some people are good at PR (I myself find it sometimes more enjoyable to write little snippets of PR text rather than actual game related text :P), but I'm sure some games could really be enjoyed by a much larger audience if they are presented well to the public. Do you think such advice can or should be provided in the guild as well?
Naturally, a seal of approval, or a mark of quality, with the build up of past reputation, can contribute greatly to the success of a game. Speaking of QA, didn't m0ds suggest some kind of beta testers guild some time ago? Where beta testers would be "trained" and then there would be great feedback that can improve games? This could be a nice optional part of guild services, perhaps.

So, what I basically want to say is, sounds like a good idea to me!

P.s. FruitTree, are you thinking of somehow merging this with your own project? With Andail's and m0ds' approval of course. Or do you still want to keep that as a seperate 'guild'? Personally I'm not entirely against multiple guilds, I just agree with m0ds that one guild is enough, if it's a quality assurance/rating guild, but if it's more about producing/publishing and helping/ctriquing, then it'd be nice to have several of these "companies".
In any case, I'm pretty sure many will still hang on to their own "production company", as it's just fun ;).

edit: As FruitTree just pointed out to me on irc, his project is more about forming a team for quality game making than supporting individuals making games.
