Heh, good point, I'll fix somne of that, as for murray, I kinda like his hat like that, makes him look clumsy, or like it's a cheap handout hat he wasd given on arrival, which was too small for his big head ;)

Thanks for the crits, :)

Well, here are a few backgrounds for a very weird and badly drawn planet :P Anyway, I should have done them in 320X200 now that I think of it, but it was just a habit for me to use hi-res, which is quite unneeded here. But anyway, here they are:

And the main character, who I still have to draw a christmas hat for (I retraced him basically from Murray in CMI):

Feedback? Critisism? Bashing? ;)

edit: Murray now with cheesy christmas hat.
       Table in KFK background redone (thanks obi for the help).

Nice, he looks cute :P
Anyway sorry for the confusion, I figured it out, it said 28th in the first post so ok :)
I'm pretty close to finishing it, might even be first to post my game this time ;)
#524
Yes, I finished it and all the GF references and such made me proud it was my favorite game (if that makes any sense). I agree with practically everything and though many things I already knew, though maybe not quite clearly. Anyway, I love this article! :)

At the risk of sounding repetetive: Do you think you could do a tutorial some time? :)
#526
Yeah I've begun reading it, a very interesting read, I don't mind it cause it's to put a stop to endless repeated discussions, and it's also very interesting from a developer wpoint of view. Also makes me want Discworld Noir even more. ;)

Can I vote for 2 people? No? Alright, Rincewind then :) I just love the isolated look (though Inkoddi's was fantastic too).

Nope! Shading takes minutes! :)

:-\ :o :D I almost thought you were serious for a second there!

....

Alright so you were serious... but..but...argh yeah maybe some day in a billion years I'll be able to say "shading takes minutes!" :P :)

Btw, I just noticed the roof, and I'm thinking maybe the bricks in it seem too small for such a building. But it's quite nitpicky of me..

Maybe you could solve it in the meantime by using MoveCharacterBackground? But I suppose it's supposed to be blocking so... :P

Yes, I second that, it would be very helpful to make text display above GUIs such as inventory. I encountered this problem when I was displaying descriptions for inventory items. I solved it at the time by displaying messages instead of speech, because DisplaySpeechAt was too problematic in my case.
Anyway just mentioning that it's a good idea :)

I tend to just type in the message I want (and I probably couldn't live without dump text to file ;)), but Global Messages can be very useful for repetetive messages, especcially if you suddenly want to change one tiny thing, heh.. Would be nice to have a multi-line option in Global Messages too.

One thing that came to mind for Global Ints, maybe there should be an editor of some sort, sorta like the Global Message editor, which would have all GI's, and you could assign initial values to all, and have a description for each. This would provide a great reference for GI's, instead of having to look all over the scripts to see if something is used or not. Of course the user will have to type in descriptions and maintain everything himself, though it would be nice if AGS could mark the ones used in the script somewhere. Not a must though, I'd be perfectly happy with just a manual GI organisation system :)
#532
Yep that should do it unless you want something more advanced, but I think wasting a GlobalInt on this is pointless, as you could just have "int sounds;" or something at the top of the room script, and thus use

// Talk to hotspot script

if(sounds!=1) {
Display("You speak into the hole you hear a noise coming from the other side.");
PlaySound(soundnumber);
sounds = 1;
}
Display("You hear no more sounds.");

Of course this might not be ideal if you want to find out in other rooms if you've heard the sound or not. In that case scotch's script is better. :)

Yep, most likely mine will come in on the last day. One thing though: you seem to indicate that the last day is saturday, 27th, and not the 25th (thursday), which is when the competition usually ends (the later the better of course, heh). Anyway, my computer (well WinXP more like) has gone AWOL, so that may pose a problem for me, but I'm reinstalling photoshop and that should take care of any trouble, as AGS is installed on Win98 too. :)

Maybe it's a disguise ;) Personally I would love to see a building like this in a more dark and scary look, but the scene around it the same, sort of an evil hidden in the nice cheerful forest :)
I think this sort of background would look great in a game, the strange markings make it very special and unique in style. The inside stones are beautiful. Only complaint is maybe the green windows look a bit too much like hollow openings with leaves behind them, making the walls look thin. Maybe it needs to be a bit lighter green :) Keeping it this way is fine too.

I agree with terran partially, but I also disagree. Heh, what I mean is, having people do everything or most of everything for you isn't good, but when I'm inspired truly by an idea, I envision it one way and I cannot settel for worse (this is graphicwise, gameplaywise, and musicwise), and often I won't be able to find anyone to do that level of perfection for the game. But this causes me not to look for help, and instead have a very strong wish to be able to do what I wanted for the game myself. But noone is great at everything, so I keep putting off more advanced ideas, and trying to work on things that I'm not as attached to.
The best way is to try doing everything on your own though, or almost everything, and learning in the proccess.

When I finish my MAGS game I'm going to take a long practice time and if needed help with other projects (which I can only with the story).

As for pitching ideas (more common in real companies), I have no knowledge of this, but I'd reccomend reading some design documents, like the ones on http://www.allowe.com/
:)

I think he might've meant paint in general, like paintings, cause these bgs really look painted..
Those backgrounds and characters are splendid :o
And not only that, they have personality! Lots of it.

Good luck asafii, sounds like a nice game, I never heard of Haddon Sandblum :)

I should get a move on too. I gotta get a sprite from MI and retrace it, and do more art and scripting (no music done yet either). But it's alright, I'll make it. ;)
#538
Well yes, it does depend on taste, I ussually don't care, though I do think the left click should be look (more automated), but it's easy enough to get used to either one. Still, giving a choice to the player would ensure pleasing everyone (heh, almost) and if someone just played a game which uses the opposite of what your game uses, he can just switch instead of being confused. :)
#539
What about the December MAGS games? Will they be included when the competition is over?
#540
asafii,
Wow, reading your piost was like looking in a mirror. I am in the exact same problem (well apart for the music thing, I can't do that either, not yet). I can almost always see what it is I want to draw, but when it comes to actually drawing, coloring, and shading I have no abillity to express my vision. One problem with me is that I'm not very patient, both with making one single image and with the whole practise matter. And I know how it feels for me when I'm told to practice, and I tell myself to practise, but I can't practise something that I don't even have anything basic on. So, luckily, I found an interesting website a while ago (generally more directed at kids in the way things are presented, but it seems to have everything, so I stareted reading through it from the very begining. Here it is: http://www.sanford-artedventures.com/

Hope it's of some use, to you and tome ;)
