In games I think I prefer for now to make cartoonish backgrounds, but not drastically so, which is why I said I was trying for realistic style.
When you draw background in a cartoon style, do you use a different method?

Presuming that was you posting through Geoffkhan's profile:
"That's a good idea, though. Next time I make a 320x200 background, I'll save it as I go and describe the process.
(If it's any good, I'll post it in the tutorial section on the Herculean Effort website.)"

A great idea, and would definetly be an interesting read!
I was thinking a tutorial in a more general sense though, like different techniques for drawing or general advice, somewhat like you did with the sprites, i.e. not just describing what you did but giving tips such as what you wrote about drawing faces. Along with demostration of the techniques you describe, I think it works better at "tutoring". :)

It looks interesting but a little too blurry I think. It might look better full screen though. I too am wondering how you're going to use it in AGS though. :)

Quote from: MillsJROSS on Sat 02/08/2003 05:35:18Or, just look at life as one big joke (without a punchline), and laugh at the good and the bad. That's what I do. Something bad happens to me, I laugh my troubles away. I know it seems strange, but why not laugh? It's a form of relief. Same with crying. Sometimes it's good to have a good cry (no matter how unmanly it is).

Laughing it off can indeed help, aswell as looking at everything in a positive manner.

There's a book called the Tao of Pooh (and also The Te of Piglet) which really changed my view on things. The book explains Taoism, a chinese sort of "belief" (not religious), using Winnie-the-Pooh, and vise versa. It really is inspiring and funny, and it helps me overcome difficulties. I only recently found out about it :).

"But the basic Taoism is simply a particular way of appreciating, learning from, and working with whatever happens in everyday life. From the Taoist point of view, the natural result of this harmonious way of living is happiness."

"Within each of us there is an Owl, a Rabbit, an Eeyore, and a Pooh. For too long, we have chosen the way of Owl and Rabbit. Now, like Eeyore, we complain about the results. But that accomplishes nothing. If we are smart, we will choose the way of Pooh. As if from far away, it calls to us with the voice of a child’s mind. It may be hard to hear at times, but it is important just the same, because without it, we will never find our way through the Forest."

That portal looks awesome, Witchsmeller, how did you do that?
How about a tutorial? Oh and welcome to the forums, you talented artist you! ;)

Hmm, is that a Lucas Arts logo guy in the bubble above the door? It looks similar hehe..

Now, how am I ever going to choose one entry to vote for from this great background blitz? This is one of the best ones ever Necro, great theme! :)

Ooh, nice idea, fidodido!

You can make both humourous and frightening games under that title ;).
#828
These look great! I love the new look the backgrounds have, very hi-tech in a way, and very smooth :).
#829
Great job Necro for the site and Vel for the issues! :)

Ah, that brings back memories...
I love that poem... ;)

I think it was how the moon, not that the moon, though it's not much of a difference. :)

Glad it worked out, good luck later on :).

i cant see it! :(

Me neither...

Even without seeing it though I think it would've been a great and very humourous idea to put signs up ;).
That's one long filename! http://www.maxfurnitures.com/data/edbed471-da32-4f74-b8de-f26df76d9f0f.jpg . I still can't see it though.. :(

Andy: Looks great, I can hardly believe it isn't a photo... ;)

I think the characters wouldn't be very hard and they're inventory would just be like switching the player character IMO, I think the hardest parts would be the verbs changing for each object, and the arrows which will have to check which room you're in at that moment, where you can go from there, and make sure each arrow leads to where it's supposed to according to that room, thus you'll have to script (using variables I suppose) where in every room are the exits and where they lead. Unless there's some way to make a sort of map which indicates where each room is in relation to the others (north, south, east, west and diagonals).

Still, I like the idea of the interface, so if you want to have such an interface go for it. If you're new though, try scripting other things first, like a test of your skills, and read the tutorial for scripting. :)

I think after you convert you need to re-import the sprites. Unless you're talking about the sprites that are in the editor by default, in which case, what did you mean by "This may be due to the sprites using a pallette meant for a specific room" ? If you meant that you assigned the colors in the pallette to be background specific, then convert back to pallette, select the first 42 colors (first 17 are marked with L, select the next 25) and uncheck the box that says "This color is room specific". You can convert back to hi-color after that if you want.
Hopefully this'll help.

Great! I like the curving of the sea, the way it goes behind the rock.

Reduce the saturation a little bit on the sand and trees maybe (though I like they're color right now), andadd some more shading in some parts I think.
Also, about the pole, at the middle of it where the bush is, a berry seems to be in front of the pole instead of behind it. There's also a slight problem with the cabin, it looks like the cabin isblending into the sand behind it, or something.. I'm not quite sure what the problem is.

:o Ooh, very nice! Personally I liked the clean and stylish lines more than these thick and "messy" ones, but that's not Bill's style as I understood.

The colouring is great, I really like the snow! :)

Just name the sound you want to play "sound2.wav" (or whatever extension you used) and put in the game directory. If it's music you want in the background name it "music2".
Then, in order to be able to hear it in the game: in the edirtor, go to Game > Rebuild Vox Files.

If you want the music to play in the background of a room, go to that room's settings and check the box that says "Play music on room load" and write the number you gave to the file there.

For sound, put the command PlaySound(2); in the script for whenever you want it to play, such as when interacting with a hotspot for example.

Hope this helps :).

Looks great!
All 3 characters look interesting and are drawn well! Ryruu and Kiera-Aurora are my favorite. :)

I think interactive environments, where the intereaction is restricted by the limitations of the character, is a great medium for gaining insight into and respect for people different from yourself.

That too :).

Well, there's a very slim chance that I might be in America at the time Mittens will be held next year, and that maybe I'll be able to get there.
Very doubtfull though.
Still, for your map:

Name: Nataly "GinnyW" Eliyahu
Age: 14 2 months ago, 15 next year (duh :P).
Email: natalye@netvisiion.net.il
Where you live: Israel.
Where you could travel to: Umm Israel? :P and america I guess(next year). I doubt I'll be able to go somewhere esspeccially for Mittens (in fact I'm sure I won't).
Where you would like Mittens to be: See above.
Can you help locate places in your area for places to stay? Hmm, there are hotels here of course but generally, other than that, no I'm afraid not.

Gosh that was pretty useless wasn't it? :P

On a side note though, Scummbuddy, my uncle lives in Maryland. ;)
