It's a good thing the world wasn't built by critics. Seems to me that the review was a mild complement - followed by a couple of slaps to the face - then ended with a friendly hug. It's not all bad I suppose since the game was reviewed and shipped on a disc. Well, it's easy to criticize and hard to contribute. At least it is for some people. Still...

There's a different between an offensive scene and a stupidly offensive scene. The first can be clarified as Art, the second can be clarified as a load full of s^&$.
When you say offensive I take it as sexual kind of? I was going to make a game about a guy that his wife would get raped from a gang of guys and he would go for revenge, and that's the closest to offensive I've reached.

Exactly. If it fits in with the story then fine. But if someone adds a rape scene in just for the sake of it then...

The simple truth of the matter is you can't satisfy everyone so don't try-you'll only end up displeasing everyone in the process. Until you have a publisher breathing down your neck about do this or don't do that, make whatever kind of game you want, are happy with, and that you get a sense of accomplishment from.

Well I tried it out but stopped when I asked it "Is this conversation being recorded?" to which it responded "I'm sure it is." While a neat distraction I'm more interested in seeing such a program being used in a IF game or even an adventure game. That would neat, imo.

While I would love to say I'm easily amused and not often offended there are some things that provoke anger or disgust in me. What may offend me in one area (Such as a novel) may not have the same effect on my via a documentary. It all depends really. It allows has a lot to do with what's going on in your life or what may happen in the future. While I may not have a problem with offensive materials in a game today, that's not to say something won't change my opinion later on. Violence in games does not bother me. Having sex like material in games does not bother me (if done proper and tasteful). But should someone use violence in a game as a means to have sex scenes then that may bother me. Really, everyone is different and all I'm saying is, what is fine today may be wrong tomorrow and vis versa. In the end, whatever floats your boat.

AGS Games in Production / Re: Open Eyes

If that's considered having artistic flaws then I wish I had such flaws. Loving the style and keeping a eye out for this game.

Hm, now that I thought about it, I would like if they ever upgraded King of Chicago. That was a rather fun game back in the day (and still is) and it could only be improved with more features.

While there have been very few games that have made me jump in fright, there are a couple. Resident Evil, Clock Tower, and Fatal Frame are a few of the games that I remember fondly. They each did something different and did it good (in my opinion), each game had it's own way of telling a story while placing you in a completely different horror situation. Zombies, Lunatics, and Ghosts. Great fun.

Although not an adventure game, (I would rather have sequels than remakes), I would have to say Sword of the Samurai.

Adventure Related Talk & Chat / L.A. Noire

I was curious if any of you have heard about this game and if so are you looking forward to it being released? It is being developed by Team Bondi and published by Rockstar Games. While not strictly an adventure game I felt it belonged being mentioned here. As far as I know it is being developed for both the XBOX 360 and Playstation 3.

Taken from the website:
QuoteRockstar Games is pleased to announce a partnership with Team Bondi Pty Ltd to publish the ground-breaking next generation crime thriller L.A. Noire. Developed by Team Bondi, a new Australian based studio founded by Brendan McNamara, of The Getaway, L.A Noire is an interactive detective story set in the classic noir period of the late 1940's.

L.A. Noire blends action, detection and complex storytelling and draws players into an open-ended challenge to solve a series of gruesome murders. Set in a perfectly recreated Los Angeles before freeways, with a post-war backdrop of corruption, drugs and jazz, L.A. Noire will truly blend cinema and gaming.

Visit the offcial website for a game trailer. You can also read more about it in Gamer Informer Issue 203 or at their website along with some exclusive screenshot goodies. If this game does not qualify belonging here feel free to move it to the General Discussion Forum. Peace.

This is really is not my strong point. Far from finished but I could not find it in me to continue but nevertheless here is what I came up with:

Merildren hurthered 'round,
Quiking a seat on the ground;
“Oh my!” they cried in haprise,
Tears of joy in all of their eyes;
For there sat a watalok,
Happily singing "Tick-n-a-Tock";

Merildren - Merry Children
Hurthered - Hurriedly Gathered
Quiking - Quickly Taking
Haprise - Happy Surprise
Watalok - A walking, talking clock

See, I suck at this sort of writing. Oh well, maybe next time.

Haha. Seriously, if you enjoy a game it really doesn't matter what anyone else (Including reviewers) has to say about it. There are dozens of games that I have greatly enjoyed that received bad reviews and negative comments. It's all a matter of personal taste. I think every game, no matter if I like or dislike it, has at least one thing enjoyable about them. If I could afford it I would own every gaming system out there because they each have a game I would like to play. I bought the original XBOX just to play Shenmue. If I could afford it, after I get my 360 fixed, I would buy the PS3 just to play Heavy Rain. I'm still waiting for a universal gaming system that lets you play games from every system on one machine. Ah, wishful thinking. I probably couldn't afford such a system anyway.

Right. I remember reading about this some time ago. Can't believe I forgot about it. Thanks for reminding me.

I just can't understand how people can still be interested in the Finale Fantasy games. I lost interest in the series after Finale Fantasy Tactics and while I tried a couple of the newer ones, they just never held my attention for long. Props go to gamers who still find the series exciting but how much longer can they keep the series afloat?

If you like this game you really should check out the rest of the games on Adult Swims' website. Most of them are funny as hell. I suggest trying the one where you have to poke a corpse down a river. Can't remember the name though.

Maybe I over reacted in my earlier comment. Maybe not. Some people would find this funny while others would be offended. I just happen to fall under the offended category. Ten years ago I may have not cared or had a different outlook. But I have a precious nephew and niece now. And even my cousin whom I held when she was baby is having her very own child so my perspective on things have changed. I just wondered how I would feel if that happened to be a picture of my own flesh and blood portrayed in such a way. Anyway, apologies if my comment was a bit much.

It really doesn't matter if it is fake. This type of crap is what's wrong with the world. If someone had exploited my niece in such a way, I'd kill them.

When I spoke of figuring out plot twists I did not mean discovering what happens before it happens nor correctly predicting the story. But rather, as mentioned, being able to collect information and being allowed to solve a problem using your own thinking abilities and tools within the game that helps aid you-not force you to gather this or that with predetermined events that force you into a set order where you need this item or that piece of exact information in order to complete and proceed in the story/game. Not that those types of games are bad.n

Take an episode from CSI. I'm not really a fan of television but I appreciate some elements from that show. And as Snarky talked about it would interesting that you are given all this story, information, data, etc and are allowed to piece it together at your own pace and in a order you decide. Also using a flashback type of gameplay in which you got to piece together how something went to see how you did would be a great addition to said game.

Just saying, less physical elements and more mental thinking. I get enough with moving, talking, using, etc. I'd just like to see more interactivity with the story and how you and it affects each other-not just want you do physically. Thanks for the feedback and taking the time out the read/comment.

Well it's about time for my once-a-year post so here goes. I think a lot of people have a certain mindset when it comes to adventure games and how they play out. You have traditionalist on one side and innovators on the other. Each side have their own views and both have valid arguments about what adventure games are, where they are now, and where they are headed. Both parties have people who think the genre is dead, while others believe it is just hibernating, and others still think the genre is being revived. Well, we all have our own opinions on the subject but I've already gone off topic.

I guess I'm just curious as to what everyone believes qualifies a game as an adventure game today. Is it the story, puzzles, theme, atmosphere, a combination of all, or something else entirely. Do you want more games to be developed and published aka like games of yesterday or do you think a complete reinvention is needed such as the recently released game Heavy Rain? Do physical and/or/both mental puzzles alone qualify a game to be considered a part of the genre or can it succeed with story and characters alone? Or can the story itself become a puzzle?

Personally, while I love adventure games of all sorts, I play them mostly for the story. To me, puzzles tie a story together and makes everything fit into place. The definition of puzzle is often broad but I always liked the following explanation: to perplex or be perplexed. To me, a good story can be as challenging and often as puzzling as a problem that requires skill or ingenuity for its solution such as any physical challenge. But as I've mentioned, the definition of puzzle is often broad, and rather varied. But most adventure games feature puzzles that are hybrid. They require both physical and mental exertion on the players' part. I guess I've always favored the mental aspect over the physical parts. To me figuring out a plot twist, or discovering who the killer might be was always more fun than going from point a to b, while collecting this or that, in order to get past here to there. Collect clues, not clutter is a more simpler explanation I guess.

Well I shall end this post here or otherwise I would write indefinitely, straying from my original subject. I most likely poorly explained what I was trying to talk about but I'm a little rusty as late when it comes to writing well thought out topics and posting about them. Anyway, I would love to hear anyone else's thoughts on the matter. I apologize for the lack of proper grammar and text formatting. Thank you for your time.
