I have never been interested in fan games or remakes, considering them a waste of both development time and creativeness. I can understand that some of the older titles could be improved with a face lift and added features but overall all it is still the same game. However this project does in fact look promising but I wonder why you simply do not try a different approach? Why not introduce a completely new character as playable? This way you can retell the same story but from a different perspective. Introducing new events as well as providing players an alternate view of familiar events. You can, in fact, keep most of the original story and characters while expanding the scope by featuring an original playable character. Just my two cents anyway. I apologize if this has already been brought up. Thank you.

There are many games not classified as adventure games that still have many adventure game like features. Truth be told, out of all these new games (while some are quite enjoyable) I am still drawn to games produced in the 1980's and 90's. Some of my favorite games are dos related. Few games today can combine all the elements into one making a good, re-playable game. Take Fallout 3 for example. Though primarily a shooter/rpg it is very much like an adventure game to a point. There are many examples and not enough time to go into details on each and everyone.

Adventure Games do not need the latest graphics incorporated into them. Warranted that many people these days are put off by any game that does not have the latest and greatest graphics even if the game play consists of nothing more than killing and blowing things up. Don't get me wrong, I love taking a hour or so break and just having a blast but I miss games that require thinking as well.

Mass Effect, while some hate it and others love it, did an overall if not cliched job. Believable characters with a good amount of dialogue. It was not, however, a true adventure game. But I still enjoyed it.

To understand the future you must understand the past, or something like that. I'm not saying adventure games must return to their roots but build on the foundation from which they began. I will play a game even if it has a few static images and nothing but stats as long as it is fun.

I, however, can not comment as far as the devolopment aspects go. I first discovered Ags back when it was Ac and only four or five people were registered on the forums. It has been ten years (or has it been longer) since that day and I've not made one single game using the program.

Games these days, sadly enough, are marketing tools used for profit. Few companies make games (big time companies anyway) that make the game because they want to and think it will be fun instead of just pushing out the next title for that extra $50 or more dollars.

I think that a good many gamers these days have simply lost their ability to sit through a game that requires a lot of reading and thinking. Sure there are strategy games among other genres that require some thought to complete but it is different for me. Out of all the game genres I never get that same sense of accomplishment from beating them as I did with a really good adventure game. Could just be me. Peace.

I was online the other day having a conversation with a group of people, most of whom were still in their teens. We got on the topic of games and as they listed off their most favorite games and the like, both old and new, I realized that the games they considered old were from early 2000 at best. So I asked them: Do you have a favorite adventure game? To my shock they asked, "What is an adventure game?".

I know adventure games do not have the fan base like the use to have. It is a very niche genre as of late. But I was still surprised that there are gamers out there who have not even heard of an adventure game. The group of teenagers I conversed with thought an adventure game was, well I don't really want to repeat what they thought they were.

It got me thinking, is there more we can do to educate, if you will, the younger generations on the joys of adventure games? I'm not talking about some of the more modernized adventure games either, filled with eye candy galore and missing the finer points of what adventure games have such as good characters, stories, challenging puzzles that required more than just pixel hunting, and the like.

Are we, not just as fans but aspiring developers, doing what we can to help in this matter? You must excuse me, if you will, for the comment I got from that discussion got me thinking and mostly got me remembering the golden years of adventure games. Sometimes fads come back into style and one day I hope this is true for adventure games as well.

Please forgive me if this post is not as structured as I would like. It has been quite some time since I last posted on these forums. Thank you.

The Rumpus Room / Re: How did you find AGS?
Fri 23/01/2009 12:35:02
I first found Ags back when it was known as Ac and there was around five people total on the forums. It was near the very first version, if I remember right. We even had a group team formed, Gods of AGS, a bit cheesy if you think about it now. I can not remember the exact year, maybe 1997 or 1998. Our very first project was a story I devised called Two Sorrows (Or was it A Tale of Two Sorrows?). The artist we had disappeared and the project fell apart. I left (for some time) and came back. A ritual I seem to have followed for many years now. I can't even remember how I came upon Ac way back then. Anyway, that's it. Nothing grand nor fancy. Peace.

General Discussion / Re: Diary of the Dead

One of my most beloved topics to talk about. Zombies. Well for movies anyway. Out of all the zombie movies none are better than the ones George A. Romero has made. Land of The Dead was not exactly the way I would have liked it to be but still watchable. Night/Dawn/Day of The Dead are by far the best ones ever to grace movies. I am stoked that a new one is being made by him and no matter how it actually turns out I will watch and buy it just to add to the Romero Zombie Collection. Strange that I would use this topic to post on after I have been away for three years and some months. Such is the power of zombieness. I'm back, by the way, for the few who still remember me.

First off, thanks to scotch for splitting the game into smaller files. I'll have to download it tomorrow night (as to not have to worry about phone calls, etc) since its alread 5 am here.

I understand that without audio and such the over game is diminished but when you are stuck with such a bad internet connection, a dial up one at that, you learn to live with such diminishes. Oh, a little off topic but, I DO watch a good bit of foriegn movies, with sound off, while just reading the subtitles. Actually I watch a lot of movies, foriegn or not, without sound or subtitles. I'm wierd, what else can I say? :D

Thanks again.

Hey, I know this is yet anouther non played it yet reply but just bear. How big would the download be if you took out all the music, sound, and voice files? Just wondering because if it would shrink the mb size down considerably then maybe us dial up users could download and play it. Maybe add the extra files as additional downloads for us to get piece by piece when time and patience allowed. Just a thought.

Interesting looking game. Too bad I'll never get to play it. I don't think anyone with a dail up connection, such as myself, will ever get to play it. 100 + mb's to download, thats just too taxing. Well maybe I'll get to read a review and find out how it plays.

How about that. Such nice people can be found on the net... and then again... such terrible people can be found on the net. Good idea though... well esp for me considering I'm always um, taking 'vacations' from the net and everytime I get back all sorts of new people and games are found on Ags and I never have enough online time to check out all the new stuff. In fact, this is my first new post in over 100 days or more... I may just take you up on such a generious offer but I never take anything for free without returning the favor somehow. Oh, and I'm back (Well, for now).

Man oh man. How cool would it be to go over there and make fun of you all! Hahahaha! No, just kidding. I can't make fun of people if they out number me. :D Wish I could come but I'm poor, jobless, a freeloader and not to mention I hate the idea of flying or taking a boat and since I live in the US I most likely will never be able to come to one of these events. Almost 22 and still poor...the shame! Actually even if I had some money and liked flying, the chances of me coming to one of these events would be slim...the main reason is...the plane ticket would cost way more than the visit and that would be too much to spend. Plus, If I did have that much cash on hand it would most likely all go toward games. :) Shamefull, eh? :D

General Discussion / Ags Game(s) to IF format?
Fri 04/06/2004 01:59:30
I was just wondering which Ags Game(s), if any, would make a good IF (Interactive Fiction/Text Adventure) game? I'm wondering because I was thinking of getting back into making IF games.

Well here you all go... the first picture of me to ever grace the internet! Actualy it is the first picture of me in over five or more years. Taken using a crappy webcam so do not expect much. You should all feel honored.  And here I am in the flesh, so to speak!

Now isn't that a face every mother would disown? ;)

General Discussion / Re:Free 1GB file upload

If somebody has a big file which is say 5mb and over, and esp if you have only a dial up, like me, then having to re upload a file like that becomes a big problem. It takes longer to upload something than to download it...at least for me.

plus...

Not a bad idea. But remember, just because a topic is interesting or has a lot of replies doesnt mean it's useful. :D

I think amature developers, well some, may ned major publishing if they intend to a) go commercial and b) want to try and reach out past the amature or adventure game scene to other gamers. But a lot of good games, big commercial and amture ones, may not get known no matter how good they are. I think in the bottom line if you have a game that is not getting the recognition your think it deserves then yea, try and find someone to help publishize it. On the other hand if you game is known and such don't bother with it. As soon as you make one good game that a lot of people like then any game you make after that becomes easier to get known and played. Of course it you make bad games and keep making them that base will fall, I think. In the end it is up to personal taste and well...everyone is different.

Well do you know the Geico commercials with the gecko as the mascot or whatever...yea...no wait...I like those commercials...

No matter how bad your life is or seems there is always someone who thinks their life is worse. Take me for example. I'm a complete mess up. 21, live at home, no job, no ambition, no dreams, still have not made a ags game :), never finished school (because they suck here), and a bunch of other crap. Nobody in my house plays games (there are six of us but 2 are little children), and they all think my playing games is stupid. But you know what? Who cares? I am me, they are they, and I never let anyone get me down over anything. Sure my life sucks, but hey, it is a life. I could be homeless or dead and not have the ability to play games or get online or all that crap. So, cheer up. :D
