People on this forum have been so helpful to me in the past, I thought I'd try my luck yet again.

I'm looking for a batch file renamer which will rename files based on rules. For example:

If the file contains a "D2" in the file name, add "01" to the beginning of the file name.
If the file contains a "D#2" in the file name, add "02" to the beginning of the file name.

The interface might not be set up this way, but as long as it can do this task, that's all I ask for.

And so forth. I found the software "Sophisticated Rename" which allows me to do this. However, I don't want to pay $60 in case there is other software out there that does this.

General Discussion / Mass email hosting
Fri 03/04/2009 08:26:29
I'm trying to email out my own newsletter, and I have around 200 subscribers to mail it out to. My newsletters comply with the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003, containing an unsubscribe link and a physical business address.

I'm looking for a service that will be able to send out that many emails. I'm not looking for an email management service, which would keep track of the newsletter subscribers, since I do that myself. Also those types of services will automatically add unsubscribe links and whatnot. Since my newsletter format already includes that, I don't want software to automatically do that.

Any suggestions?

So the other day I bought the sweetie a shirt, and when I got home I found that the cashier had neglected to remove the anti-theft device from it. It was one of these: http://www.sensormatic.com/Products/EAS/HardTags/HardTagsFamily/SuperTagIII.aspx

Basically it is attached the shirt: if you pull too hard, it tears a portion of the shirt off with it. Some of these devices even contain ink that will stain the shirt if you try to remove the security tag yourself.

Being the little adventure gamer I am, rather than driving all the way back to the store to have them remove it, I took the challenge to take it off myself.

After trying many tools on it, knives, pliers, etc. I settled on using a hammer and chisel, which although taking a long time, did the trick of splitting the plastic tag in half. At that point it was easy to release the shirt.

Just another one of those life adventure game puzzles. :)

General Discussion / DVD to video file
Wed 07/05/2008 06:17:12
Hey guys, I'm trying to convert a DVD (non-commercial) to a file format such as .mov or .wmv or such. I tried using HandBrake, and although I like it, its output formats and encoding options are limited.

Is there any other good software that can allow me to do this? Any ideas much appreciated.

You might know of the excellent Robotragedy series of adventure games, created by my friend, Pijin Pastrana.

Well, he's working on a new, cool adventure game! I've played it a bit, and it's got a great Lucasarts style to it. But I'm in the middle of a semester and I won't have time to help test the game myself, so we're looking for some else who might be interested. Think Monkey Island/Indiana Jones. :)

General Discussion / Stitch images together
Wed 11/07/2007 20:26:58
I'm looking for a graphics utility that can stitch multiple images together into one, vertically or horizontally. I've been using Trentstitch, but that only supports BMP files. I also have a mysterious little program called "masker" that can stitch images together. However, the problem I'm using PNG files because I'm using the alpha channel. "Masker" doesn't get the alpha channel.

Any ideas?

General Discussion / My band got in the news
Mon 09/07/2007 18:44:36
In band I play in, Blusion, we recently released a CD, called "Sign of the Times". Just this morning I learned that we got our first big review in the news. The writer of the article, Ron Jacobs, describes what we're about really well:

(In the second half of the article, entitled "Blusion")

Sound clips of the album can be heard at: http://www.blusion.com/pages/merchandise.html

Here's a great resource for sound effects:

http://www.soundsnap.com

These are all sound effects recorded by users. It would probably be worth a look into the licensing since "free" needs a little elaboration. Nevertheless, looks like this website could be useful for amatuer game creators!

Alright, the guidelines for this contest are to write a duet for two instruments. They could be different instruments or the same type of instrument, but just a duet.

In judging the entries, I'll be looking for an imaginative composition and good realization of this composition (quality production, etc.)

Good luck!

Critics' Lounge / Solo piano work
Sat 17/02/2007 03:30:39
Nobody showed up to my recording studio tutor session, so I took the time to make a quick solo piano recording.

http://www.gregjazz.com/upload/somedaymix2.mp3

Sorry about the shoddy playing, I was playing from memory a tune I haven't played in some time. What I'm working on is the piano tone in the mixing. Do you think the treble mic be panned to the right and the bass to the left (like from the pianist's view), or the opposite?

I was being a little experimental, so the piano is mic'd with two AKG C2000B (large diaphragm mics).

This game puts you in the unitard and cape of a musical superhero who waits tables at the Zanzibar restaurant under the cover of night. After playing a weekend concert that revolutionizes the local airwaves, our saxophonist receives a phone call at work.

Super Jazz Man explores the fundamental elements of an adventure, unfolding locations with the progression of the narrative while featuring nostalgic low-color graphics. Play through four unique endings!

For roughly the price of a martini in Manhattan, you can play it today!

Indoor locations feature a skyline to depict the surrounding area (differentiating the campus, downtown, and the suburbs).

Hi guys,

Thought this was a simple enough question to be posted in the beginner's forum.

All the MIDIs I play in AGS use the default channel 10 drum sound (program 0: standard kit). For some reason it's not obeying my program change in the MIDI file to change it to one of the other patches.

Any hints or tips regarding this?

Hey guys,

So I wrote a plugin and it works great on my computer. But on the two other computers it was tested on, the compiled game came up with a "Unable to load plugin 'whatever.dll'"

Any idea as to why this may be?

Critics' Lounge / Orchestral work
Mon 27/11/2006 08:08:55
Hi!

Here's something I've been working on over Thanksgiving. The second movement (that last part) is still under construction, but you get the idea. It's entirely Miroslav Philharmonik.

http://www.gregjazz.com/upload/orchestralwork.mp3

I'm thinking maybe the flute section and piccolos are too loud, what do you think? And I know, legato is SO difficult to do with orchestral libraries.

Here's a small request/idea I have. What if the script editor would remember where you were when you closed it?

This would be very convenient, for example, if you're tweaking something in the global script, and then want to test it. After you test the game, and then bring up the global script again, you have to scroll through it to find where you were. It's a little nuisance if you have a large global script (or room script).

What do you think? It would just make scripting a little more pleasant, and it doesn't seem like it would be that complicated a feature to add...

Greetings fellow tunesmiths,

Your theme this week is: Jungle music

Not the Jungle genre of electronic music, but just an interpretation of the word. You could, for example, create a massive tribal beat for a song, or it could be focused on an "urban jungle", or perhaps it's just a jazz tune with a "jungle" feel to it.

Most importantly, have fun!

Hey guys,

My dad introduced me to this website about storyline structuring. After reading a couple pages, it became evident that I might not be the only one who could find this resource extremely useful and interesting. I especially like how he makes good references to movies to explain points, not to mention his writing is pretty great, too. Hey, a good movie storyline would make a good adventure game storyline, right?

Hey guys,

I hope this is not too spam-ish, but I know there are a lot of talented computer musicians here who would be interested in this. There's a company I do a lot of sampling for, ManyTone music, and we just had a big group buy. Of course it hit the limit in no time, and now anyone can buy ManyTone products for 50% off until June 30th.

Here's the thread:

And here's the main website for ordering, MP3 demos, and more information:
