I don't completely agree with Greg's points. Firstly, I don't see why Jakerpot doesn't sound appealing. It's original so what's the deal? And how do you even define appealing? It's so subjective that you can't possibly please everyone. I don't think such things as "bad/unappealing company names" exist. The important thing is that it's memorable. Jakerpot Games is a name you don't forget in an instant, unlike boring names such as CreatIV Games.

The thread's over, but I thought I'd respond to this post to clarify my position. Since you want to make a company name that appeals to your customers, you need to consider your market. If you're creating games for adolescents, something like "Toilethead Productions" could fly. If you're creating childrens' games, you need to bear in mind that their parents will probably be buying the games for them, so you need to come up with a company name that appeals to parents. Do you begin to see what I'm saying?

Anymore, while thousands of new companies are being created, you need to rely on something other than a catchy name to help your company catch on. (which is why we take into account SEO for the company name, market appeal, etc.)

Like I said, though, for a company that's going to be making free games, all this is probably far beyond what you need to consider.

Yeah, i think its just you Gregjazz  :P i think many players don't even care about the company name, but when the company make 5 or 6 games, and they start to be a little famous, they start to care about it.

The connotations of a company name is extremely important. However, if you're looking to just make free games and have fun, I guess you don't need to care about that.

yeah i know, but i would like to use Jakerpot Games. So it almost decided, if no one has any more suggestions, i can finish the case.

It sounds like you have your heart set on the name, but as I said before, don't pick a name that is appealing to you, but one that will be appealing to your customers.

The word "Jakerpot" just don't sound good to me. The word "Jaker" sounds either like "Joker" or "Jake". The word "pot" is either a reference to a toilet or perhaps marijuana. Overall the word doesn't sound very appealing. Maybe that's just me, though.

Herculean Effort?  ::) what the heck... Ok, but i want to have a company, and if they can remember yahtzee, why can't they remember jack in the pot? If they know me (jakerpot) will be easy to remember, and the logo will help.

"Jack in the pot" is an awfully long name. It sounds more like the name of a casino than a game-designing company. In the four second window of time you have for retaining new visitors on your website, you don't want to give them the wrong impression of what the website is about.

Remember, you're not naming the company something you like, but something your customers will like.

For SEO, having the word "games" in your company name, while still coming up with a non-generic sounding name is ideal. Misj's idea "CreatIV Games" is a good example.

Avira is much, much better than Avast and AVG, IMO. Also, get Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware, which is also excellent (it only runs when you tell it to).

Where were you 2 years ago, Greg?!

Hahah, what I actually meant is that it's an awesome jacket, and I'll have to look for it for myself next time I'm in the city.

Two years ago, I didn't see this thread when it was originally created. Sad day, I could've helped.

That's an awesome jacket! I'll have to look for it next time I'm in the city (I live like 40 minutes away).

First of all, you need a DBA for your company. Although this will not protect your business name (you need a trademark for that), it will allow you to legally operate under your company name.

Depending on where you live and if you're going to sell games (also depending on if you will have an inventory of physical games, or if you are selling digital downloads) you may need a business license and a sellers' permit. Look into your local county and state laws to figure out which one(s) you need.

For your purposes, probably a sole proprietorship is the best route, IMO.

If you hire people, they are independent contractors, not employees or partners. Make sure you clarify your relationship with anyone working for/with your company.

Oh my word, did you manually set up a MySQL database Greg? And if so how many light-years did that take you??

I love Fantastico. ;D

I use CubeCart v3, which can do digital downloads.

Get a powerful magnet. Afaik, that's what they have in the shops to get them off.

I have some powerful magnets (earth magnets or whatever you call them), but I didn't try them since they'd have to be REALLY powerful to bend the metal piece inside the tag. I think stores use those hook things to take them off. That's what their design looks like at least.

I don't remember if the alarm went off or not. The lady at the cash register was nice, but she also seemed a little stressed, so I'm not surprised she forgot to take the tag off.

Fortunately this wasn't the kind that contains ink. Otherwise, I'd be in trouble with the amount of abuse I gave that thing with a hammer.

So I guess the lesson is... make sure they take off all the tags before you leave the store.

So the other day I bought the sweetie a shirt, and when I got home I found that the cashier had neglected to remove the anti-theft device from it. It was one of these: http://www.sensormatic.com/Products/EAS/HardTags/HardTagsFamily/SuperTagIII.aspx

Basically it is attached the shirt: if you pull too hard, it tears a portion of the shirt off with it. Some of these devices even contain ink that will stain the shirt if you try to remove the security tag yourself.

Being the little adventure gamer I am, rather than driving all the way back to the store to have them remove it, I took the challenge to take it off myself.

After trying many tools on it, knives, pliers, etc. I settled on using a hammer and chisel, which although taking a long time, did the trick of splitting the plastic tag in half. At that point it was easy to release the shirt.

Just another one of those life adventure game puzzles. :)

Great job! I know how you did it, but you did a fantastic job with the sleight of hand. Practice it more and do it faster and smoother, and it'll be even better!

As long as there isn't the same voter fraud that got Bush in office, I think we're safe to say that Obama has this election.

Work on the Petrucci exercise. That'll help your speed and accuracy immensely. Always play with a metronome, and don't play faster than you can play with accuracy--then slowly push the boundaries to expand this.

lol, that's amazing! ;D
