I got one word: CROWBAR.  8)

I thought the graphics were quite nice, but I felt really lost... I wasn't sure what I was supposed to be doing, there was very little happening in terms of story and I found myself repeatedly lighting candles all over the house, which after a while became quite a chore, because there is to much clicking involved when you want to use an inventory item. Also I felt like the only items I could find were those candles...

There were some nice touches, like the sound of the car engine playing in the start menu ( which by the way in the final game could do with something more than a black background), then the shot of a car with its engine dying. I liked that. Also- very good, atmospheric music and sounds. I don't know if it's my pc or something... but every time I open the door the sound plays several time like it's stuttering, for some reason...Was that intentional or is my sound card playing up? Other sound play fine and they're very nice.

I didn't finish it but I played enough to get a good idea of what it's about. And overall it's good and I will give finished game a try. Just needs more polish and some tlc here and there, and that inventory needs fixing, mate. I'd suggest that it closes once the player has selected the item.

I'm struggling with setting up a working inventory... How about going one step further and adding a fully functional inventory?... Pretty pretty please?... ;)

General Discussion / Re: Dead Island Anyone?

I bought the PS3 version few days ago and I'm really enjoying it. I do agree about the doors... but I suppose it just doesn't bother me enough to grumble.

I haven't been able to play any co-op though. I press the required button when other player is nearby, I get loading screen... and the connmection always fails. I wonder what's causing that? Lame PS3 lobby system or maybe my wireless connection dies out after a while and by the time it's ready that other player is already gone.... I don't know. But so far I have not managed to connect with anyone, therefore I slay zombies alone. It's a big job for one man....

I should also add that Ascovel's fellow country men are my fellow country men too.... So I'm very proud, as well:) First the Witcher, now this... Soon, we're gonna be bigger than Japan ( with the release of The Cat Lady hopefully, hahaha:) ) Go Poland! ;)

OK.sure.Ali's module(smooth scrolling) is good for prototype game.with less color and small and limit objects.if we use more high color and resolution and many objects and big sprite in same time we have stutter screen(I tried it).

I'm using it for what (at least I think) will be one of the biggest AGS games ever, in 32 bit colours, 800 x 600 resolution and over 3000 alpha layered sprites, and I can testify that Ali's module is absolutely -fucking- brilliant. You just have to set it up right.

Actually, I personally think we could do with a game template for this left/right click interface. Searching the forums (when the search function isn't broken... :P) only gets you a very old Broken Sword template, which I used for Downfall but found it extremely old and buggy and it didn't really work well with different game resolutions.

I'm guessing the reason for there not being one is that most AGSers who are better at scripting can whip one out in five minutes... but it just would be so nice to have it handy, or rather- to have an ultimate version that works 100% bug free, with a proper inventory and hotspot labels displayed. I, personally, would make more short games if it didn't mean starting everything from scratch...

Verbcoin is all right... but I'm not a great fan of it. And the Sierra-based one hasn't aged well at all, what with all the cursors changing and fiddling around...

I apologize for mentioning it in this specific topic- I hope you don't mind poc301. I just needed to get this off my chest;)

I like it. Are you inspired by the Arctic Monkeys by any chance?

It's not mass appeal but as I mentioned before, I get a kick out of seeing the technological progress. For me it's a personal pleasure. It so happens that these games that you hate so much in the last few years have served as a great showcase of what we're capable of in terms of graphics.

"Games that you hate so much"? I don't hate mainstream games. I love how some of them look and play same as you. I was just surprised about by what you said about the global ritual of playing them and the bonding power it has. I simply love overanalyzing things like that. :)

Look, I quit smoking five days ago. I'm going a bit crazy. If you don't hate them, then maybe I will! :) I need to hate something right now......

No, sorry. What I mean is that I might've got the impression that you're really against callofduties and such and said "hate" but I didn't mean it in a nasty way;)

Now, because I've run out of things to say and because my son is attacking me/ stopping me from thinking straight, I will place this here smiley at the end of the post ( I never understood what it represents so I  might not get another chance):  :=

Jesus, man! What a great trailer! At first I wasn't sure about Muse playing in the background... but then it all totally fitted! Well done! :)

I'm very excited about this game too! I only played the Convergence nad some demo before that but I find they're very easy to get into and great fun.

An idea for the future- while Blackwell games obviously have their very special atmosphere and stick to certain rules set by previous installments, it'd be interesting to see a darker, scarier version of the game. Like with Batman- there were some Batman stories suitable for all ages  but there were also some that pushed gore and mature themes to the limits...

I know very well now that adventure games fans aren't really after that sort of thing and commercialy it's safer not to tread on this whole "18+ games territory"... but I'm still curious what it'd look like to have Rosa and Joey in a over the top spine-tingling horror story... ;) I'd call it: Blackwell: Bleed Well.... No, that's crap. But think about it, Dave!:) (I'll do the graphics for you, right?:))

I don't understand what satisfaction is to be found here. Brushing your teeth is also a ritual that millions participate in every morning. Why would mass appeal make such games more fun for a specific person?

It's not mass appeal but as I mentioned before, I get a kick out of seeing the technological progress. For me it's a personal pleasure. It so happens that these games that you hate so much in the last few years have served as a great showcase of what we're capable of in terms of graphics. And for a developer, it's always good to see what the big guys are up to;)

Anyway, like there is nothing wrong with brushing your teeth in the morning, there is also nothing wrong with saving a world in the evening by running and gunning and so on. Actually, both things are good for you. Healthy... ;) Because in life  there is time for intellectual entertainment and brainless fun, too. After a hard day at work, you sometimes just want to let off some steam... ;)

QuoteFPS games are still black magic to non-gamers and most of caual gamers....  And any idiot can listen to shitty pop because the only requirement there is to have ears... I think these games don't as much get easier, as we get better at playing them, too.

I'm pretty convinced that the best and most ardent FPS players are kids who devote all their time to it, and are ignorant when it comes to all other areas.

I rarely play multiplayer... But devoting your 6-8 hours to a single player campaign isn't rteally that much of a sacrifice.
Then again, I USED to play online ( Left4Dead) and can't remember any kids on my friends list on Steam. On the contrary, I had a great group of people to play with! - we often teamed up with an Albanian mathematician, Jamaican web designer, German teacher and a Brit who did voiceovers for a living, and as different as we all were, it was great to know we shared a lot of passion for one particular game...

There are kids out there, sure. You give them a smack on the ass for trying adult games and send them off to play outside... :)

I play both indie and mainstream. The mainstream and its technological progress ( or visual porn as someone has called it) fascinates me because I just love seeing where we're going with the quality of modern graphics. Things that were impossible when I was a kid with a Commodore 64... I dreamed that one day this and that will happen....and, well, it's happening now, and it's beautiful!!! For me, it's a dream come true!

You get something different out of every game, don't you? You'd play Call Of Duty for an adrenaline rush and incredible graphics and set-pieces, but also it's somehow nice to know that you participate in this global ritual that's bonding  for so many gamers across the world... And it's not quite the equivalent of pop music. FPS games are still black magic to non-gamers and most of caual gamers.... And any idiot can listen to shitty pop because the only requirement there is to have ears... I think these games don't as much get easier, as we get better at playing them, too.

There are also great games in the indie corner, such as Limbo, which I played recently, and loved it, too. But it's always quite risky buying an indie game.... I didn't "get" Path at all, for instance, and reading about it I thought it had everything I look for in a game.... But then, I just hated it, and I can't even explain why.... Other games can be essentially broken, too. I strongly suspect some of them are made by bigger companies who realize they've  not done very well and decide to go the "indie way"...;)

...do a GAME which is a commentary on the goods and bads of modern society when compared to my personal utopia. Hmmm...

I'd play it. Damn, I'd even make it with you! I'm on the same page as you regarding the whole issue and I can't understand why everyone's being so bloody soft!

These criminals need a good kick up the arse to finally wake up. If I can obide the law and work hard every day, why should I feel my family is threatened by those who don't give a shit about anything and anyone? Good for you WHAM for expressing your views. Like I said before , I couldn't agree more.

pmartin: So you're the guy who posted a comment on my Youtube channel?;) I'm sure there's room for another horror game with this kind of animation... I don't know how far into production you are, but after having made over 3.000 sprites this way I've learnt few things and will happily share some knowledge with you ( PM me?).  One important fact is that no matter what, you will always have to do some editing and post-production tweaking to the sprites to make sure there are no sharp sticking out edges or add some details. It is also a great way to experiment with all sorts of motion blur effects- sometimes it's just a single frame that adds a lot to the visual quality of the whole animation.

Surdy: I think I can remember that as well- I spent a lot of time playing Diablo on my Playstation 1 with my brother. Good times:)

I shouldn't really reveal who that nurse is yet ( spoilers!) but you will find out soon enough. I can only say  that as I said in the other thread, there is a part of game that pays a direct tribute to Maniac Mansion. So..... do you remember any nurses from that?.... ;) And the swimming pool in the backyard? How about a little refresher:

As for a Devon Axeman... well, yes and no. There are several characters that pose a threat to the player in TCL. This is just one of them.

And the voices are only used in trailers at the moment. I am planning to do va for all speech ( not hotspots descriptions) in the game at the last stage of production. Temporarily, different actors have been used. The voice in the first trailer has been kindly recorded for me by a New York actress who does some work for Dave Gilbert. The nurse, on the other hand... I got fed up and did it myself:) Yeah, I know...

Cleanic: Thank you kindly:) There will be more about the game in the upcoming months before release!

Bogdan: They're all gonna hate me for all this violence, aren't they?... I'm glad there are people like you who like it, but I can already predict an awful lot of problems with publishers saying: " It's too much. Cut down on the blood and the swearing. It's too risky"). Well, I'm not gonna bloody cut on anything! ;) This is my game and there's tons of blood in it, amongst other things. After having played Dead Space 2 recently, I find it very hard to understand how my depiction of violence could offend anybody while games like DS2 feature a man taking some woman's EYE with a SCREWDRIVER, and than WAVING it around like a trophy. I think I'm not at that kind of level with TCL yet....

Dualnames: You- shut up:) I will need your help soon, actually, to make this game great:)

Darius Poyer: Oh, yeah:) Thanks for reminding me. And more positive comments this time, too! Have people really finally tired of playing COD all over again?... Also, I probably should play that ClockTower game they're always bringing up, just so I can understand why.... ;)

My life sucks a lot lately... I'm trying to stay positive for the sake of those I care about, but I just feel really tired all the time.

But that doesn't matter. I've always believed that one day I will become 'someone'... It's just damn hard getting there, sometimes.

Wouldn't it be better to go through the door next to the bullet casings, since that would imply a receding front, and more likely a way out. That was the reasoning behind my previous un-utilised input. :P

I suppose you're right. Can I change it to:

>Take the door that Wynkyth+ had suggested?

I want to see some daylight, too.

>Go through the double door to the north.
