Great idea.
I think I understand how to steer the ship... in theory. In practice I keep crashing and sinking my ships. I've still to get past journey 2.

Maybe some sort of visual aid would be good to have. With the lunar lander you could see what way the lander was pointed and how much trust was applied. I believe something like that would be helpful for me in this game too.

I think I'll give this one a shot :)

In a dialog script I believe you have to refer to an object this way

        object[1].Visible=true;

The number (ID) of the object you will find in the property list for that object.

Well, shiver me timbers. Two excellent backgrounds already 8-0

Nice job CaesarCub and DBoyWheeler.

@gameboy
Lots of time left. Just do it (nod)

Nice little history lesson, with a piece of myth thrown in.

It's a pirates life for me...

Make a background fit for a pirate game;

it could be the gun deck of the pirate ship,
the cave where the booty is to be buried,
the tavern where you recrute your crew
or any other scene you would find in a pirates game.

To be finished by July 21th 2016 (Time for entries has ended)

Will be judged on
CONCEPT
PLAYABILITY
ARTISTIC EXECUTION

and mainly on size of bribe to the Governor of Skull Island

Voting until 31th july. Post with list of entries further down.

OK. I'll give this some thought and then come back with a topic for the next blitz. :)

Hello, I started the demo and crashed the airplane into the ground after a few minutes but I'll give it another try later.

----

Thank you for the feedback. I've put some tips on flying in the hints and tips thread.

I did see the image before it was removed so I have understood the point you wanted to make (I don't necessarily completely agree with you, but I have understood the point).

On flying the plane in the flight simulator

[embed=640,450]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ivdegZY1Vc[/embed]

Since I've got some feedback (in the forums and outside)on people crashing with the plane I will post a couple of tips on how to fly the plane and avoid crashing. Nothing in this is meant to be secret and to be something the player necessarily should learn the hard way, so I'm not putting this inside hide tags. If you want to find out for yourself, you should stop reading now.

If you touches the ground with the plane, you crash. You can only land on the landing strip. More on that later.

You can see your altitude on the altitude meter to the left on the screen. When you get very low you will see the shadow of the plane on the ground. Stay away from the ground and you will not crash.

You gain altitude by pulling the stick towards you (positioning the cursor closer to the bottom of the page) and goes downwards by pushing the stick away from you. The further away from the middle you go the steeper than ascent or descent will be. To go up you also will have to have a sufficient amount of speed. You control the throttle with the mouse buttons. You have a speed meter to right/bottom.

Keeping the cursor in the middle area will keep the plane steady, if you have enough speed.

You turn the plane by moving the stick (cursor) left or right. The further you move the stick the sharper the turn will be. If you make a very sharp turn landmarks will move by faster.

There are lines on the screen to help you see where you have the neutral middle ground for the stick action.

To orient you have a compass in the top left corner showing in what direction you are flying. When lost start circling till you find a landmark. You should probably avoid turning to sharply. When you find a landmark fly towards it, then circle to find the next landmark. Repeat until you find the landing strip.

Landing on the landing strip

Fly in low over the landing strip. A landing symbol will appear over the plane. Click it and the plane lands.

Don't try to land by lowering the plane until it touches the ground at the airstrip. It will not work. You will crash. Maybe that option will be added in a later version, but for now don't try to do that.

Fly safely and don't forget to save before you go flying, if you want to make certain that you will not lose the progress you made up to that point.

I finished the demo last night. I am REALLY liking this and that's why I want to provide my feedback.

-----

Thank you for the feedback and the the time you have put into that. I do appreciate that.

The game is a team effort and the good things in it is also something that the team should have credit for. The things that work less well is ultimately my responsibility.

The demo is not the finished product so some of things you remarked on might be different in the final version.

-----------------

When player dies in the last arcade game the game crashes
I have not observed this. Is this the room with the pillars coming down from the ceiling?

Intro movie
From a storytelling point I want this before the main menu. You might not have noticed this but in the main menu you can set the intro movie to off. If you do that it will not play the next time you open the game. An alternative could be to automatically set that to off and give the player an option to play the movie again if they want to.

Balancing different types of puzzles and story telling elements
Well, that is the trick, isn't it :)
Interested to hear how folks feel about the balance.
In the end I'll do something I would like to play.

Rotating star
I'll add something to the "pointer arm" to make it stand out besides having a different color. Good to have this pointed out since I didn't realize there would be a problem for some people and it is fairly easy to fix.

The crazy room
The Paris section is basically a game I made before The Red Desert (in flash). I have reused the art from that game and stuck closely to what happened in that game.
The crazy room was in that version a top down shooter, somewhat similar to Space invaders. I thought that it was too similar to the shooting game in the tunnels in the Egypt section, so I changed it, but reused many of the graphic elements from the original version. So that is the story behind the look of that room.
We have some ideas about more stuff for this room and the final version might be even more crazy. :)

Ok got it. With your help I finished the demo. I have a lot of comments and I assume that's the reason to release the demo. Would you prefer that I PM you with my feedback or that I post on the main forum? I would prefer for others to see my comments because some people will agree and some will disagree and you might get better feedback that way. However, I don't want to give away too much of the game to people who haven't played. It's up to you.

SHADOW

We love to have feedback. I agree that comments in the forum is the better way to go. You could use the hide-tags if you feel that something might be to much of a spoiler. That way anyone that want to find out for themselves could refrain from opening that text.

I too missed there were categories so here is my complete vote;

Concept: Mandle
Playability: SinSin
Artistic execution: SinSin
Best hiding: SinSin

Nice idea for a competition Frikker. Would have been nice with a couple of more entries, but there you go. What we did get was very different approaches to the task which is interesting.

:)

My vote goes to SinSin. :)

Is that actually related to this game (part of the production) or just fan-art?

It is part of the production
