I had so much fun doing the first one that I made another!

Technically I went over the color limit by 1, so if it doesn't count as an entry, so be it.

I guess all those pushups finally paid off.

Like I said in our PM discussion, it would have been considerate if you had asked me before doing a Ben Jordan remake, and I think it would show improvement and give you more "credibility" or "acceptance" in the community if you released your own game, but at this point, I'll just wish you luck and say that I'm intrigued to see what you've done.

You really do have talent, and I expect to see awesome stuff from you.

Wow man, you must own an airline or something.

Nah, I went on vacation to Europe with some friends over the holidays, and it happened to coincide with Wintermeet.Ã,  I certainly wouldn't have spent money to just fly to Wales!

We also watched The Flash, which was terrible!  Also, a little Welsh girl shouted insults at Goldmund after he shouted at her in Polish.  Such rude children in that vile land.

The Rumpus Room / Re: AGS Questionaire!
Mon 27/02/2006 06:28:52
Name: Francisco Gonzalez

Age: 24

Female/male: Male

1. How long have you been involved in the AGS community?
Since March of 2001, and I've only got 484 posts!

2. Why did you get involved in AGS?
I wanted to make my own adventure game ever since I played Hugo's House of Horrors back in the early '90s.

3. How do you feel that the fact that AGS is a freeware programme affect the community that has built up around it?
Being free certainly draws more people to it, and the fact that one guy is responsible for such a program and actually listens to suggestions gives it a more home-y feeling.

4. How big a part does the AGS community play in your life?
A disgustingly large part.Ã,  I check the forums several times a day, and I think I have more friends in AGS than I do in real life.

5. Have you been involved in making any games using AGS? You may list them if you want
Yes.

6. Answer these questions if you have been involved in making AGS games:

a. Were you interested in game design/programming before you started using AGS?
I fooled around with Klik n Play for a little bit, and also with this thing called QuestMaker when I was younger, but nothing serious or good every resulted from those.

b. If no, do you feel that you would have got into game design without AGS?

c. Do you make games using other programmes, either freeware or not? How does the experience differ?
Nope.

d. Has AGS inspired you to try and take up game design professionally?
In theory it's a nice idea, but I wouldn't really want to do it for a living. It stops becoming fun when it's work.

7. Do you feel that there is a gender divide in the AGS community?
There's definitely more males, but aside from that, no.

8. Are you likely to feel differently about a game if you discover it's made by a female? In what way?
No.

9. Do you feel that AGS makes it easier for females to get involved in computer game design? In what way?
I think AGS makes it easier for anyone to get involved in game design, regardless of gender.

10. Do you feel that there is a difference between the types of games created by males and females?
I don't think so.

11. Any other comments?
Do I get a prize?

The one thing that confuses me is the idea of making a remake "for practice."Ã,  Why not just create something original?Ã,  I guess I can understand the excitement of getting AGS and wanting to make a game quickly, just ripping sprites and backgrounds from games that have already been made (I'm somewhat guilty of doing this myself).  But really, you can just download AGS, rip some sprites of Guybrush walking, put him in the Melee Island town square, and have him walk around in your game for your own amusement until the novelty wears off.  Then, once you've got the adrenaline going and are into the idea of making a game, come up with something yourself.

You don't have to be original, I mean there really is no "original" anymore.  Every adventure game is either about pirates, or a western, or the paranormal, or a murder mystery, or some mixture of those.  Most of the popular AGS games aren't 100% original in that sense.  However, if you can think of something different it doesn't matter, as long as you aren't just taking a game we've all played before and make an exact copy that isn't going to be as good as the original (with the notable exception of taking a game that wasn't very good to begin with and making it better, a la KQ2VGA).  But it seems everyone wants to remake good games that don't need to be remade.  It's like films that were good to begin with being remade, like that awful shot-for-shot remake of Psycho they did a few years back.  If it ain't broke, why fix it?

Anyhow, I've been ranting for a while, but my main point is, if you're actually going to put the time and effort into making an actual game, why sit there and spend your time ripping sprites and backgrounds and what have you, when you can just dedicate the same amount of time to doing something on your own?

My favorite example of LSL's approach to "death as comedy" was in Leisure Suit Larry 2

Spoiler
At the airport, when you eat the Blue Pate Special and you choke on a bobby pin inside.  Then when you restore your game and this time look inside the food instead of eating it, it says something along the lines of "Feeling as though you may have choked on this food in a previous life, you decide to look inside it just in case."

I of course mean "favorite" with a heavy dose of sarcasm.

Personally, I enjoy a balance of the two extremes, a game where you don't die from walking off a cliff, but where you can die when entering a potentially life-threatening situation.  You wouldn't just walk into a room full of heavily armed guards who wanted to kill you in real life, why would you do it in an adventure game and then not expect lethal consequences?

If you have a cartoony game where the main conflict is relatively harmless, then not being able to die is fine, but if the game is supposed to be dark and mysterious, with danger at every turn, not being able to die kind of takes some suspense out of it.

A good example of this, I think, is Gabriel Knight 1.  In that game, it wasn't possible to die until the 5th day or so, and when you walked into trouble, you had a little bit of time to save your game before you died.  Later in the game you could die in the dangerous situations, but this was a great contrast to games like Leisure Suit Larry where you die as a form of comedy.  Annoying comedy, but comedy nonetheless.

It's like mixing togeter The Dig with Sam and Max, it's like oil and water.

Oh really?Ã,  So I guess that mixing Monkey Island and Grim Fandango is okay?

(From Mats' website)
QuoteThe story so far: Guybrush Threepwood meet the Voodoo-lady on Scabb Island to find out that he needs to find the Death-controller, which is twice as powerful as the Ultimate Insult and can use the powers of Life and Death, before LeChuck who has come back from the dead as a Skeleton-pirate together with Ozzie Mandrill (Who is fully restored). Guybrush travels together with Manny Calavera, his wife Elaine and Manny's companion Glottis throughout the Tri-Island Area in search of the Death-traveler which can teleport living people back and forth through the Living world and the Land of the Dead.

I like the look of your game, Chicky.  It's nice to see a Monkey Island fangame that actually has an original idea behind it.

I've downloaded Pamela and am playing around with it, but for some reason AGS doesn't seem to like any of the phonemes associated with E.  Anybody know any way to fix this?

Hooray! Ã, Thanks to all who voted, it's really an honor having won. Ã, I was actually in the Florida Everglades with Farlander and Lorena during the awards, so that's why we were not there! Ã,

Well, a while ago I asked Kinoko for some help with some Japanese translation, for the purpose of recording a song for Ben Jordan 5, so here, in all it's horribly-pronounced glory, is said song, which you will hear playing over the end credits.

Especially considering that one of the main Mittens activities is eating children, we don't want to have to sacrifice members of the attendees' families.

Is there a difference? Either way both are set out to destroy Christianity.

Christianity has already been destroyed by over-zealous closed-minded religious nutjobs (read: Christians) who seem to have trouble identifying with reality.Ã,  Kind of makes sense that open-minded thinkers would choose to ignore it, doesn't it?

Same here, I think the 16-23rd would be much more do-able.
