The term "newbie" has to be defined in the appropriate context.  I think the negative connotation of "newbie" is the classic "n00b!" who comes on these forums saying "I ARES GONNA MAKE BIG EPIC GAME! BUT I WANT ALL YOU PEOPLE TO DO THE WORK FOR ME!1!!" and then they wonder why nobody wants to help them so they say "YOU ALL SUXXORS!!!11! I ARES GONNA SHOW YOU ALL BY MAKING BIG GAME WITH 10,000,000 ROOMS AND FULL TALKIE AND AWESOME GRAPHICS!!1!!"

Another wonderful quality is the classic one-word-post, most notably seen in the critic's lounge.  There's plenty of "newbies" on these boards, which is to say, newcomers to AGS who actually read the manual, learn it for themselves, and ask questions in a civilized manner should they need any help.  Unfortunately, these take a back seat attention-wise, as it is the "n00bs!" who come forth and tarnish the name for everyone else.

Having said that, let the flaming begin!

All you n00bs need to shut up and get off these forums unless you're going to make a positive contribution, which, sorry to say, rarely happens.  Make a game and then we'll talk.  And here's an idea...how about instead of hanging around in #ags all day talking about meaningless crap, you actually get off your asses and do something game-related?  I rarely even go in there anymore because I can't stand to listen to the childishness and stupidity that gets flung around like monkey dung at the zoo!

About 2 years ago when I first joined, this place was a small close-knit welcoming community.  Now it seems like every other day we get a new "TEAM NEEDED!1!!" post, or even worse, some stupid topic nobody cares about in the gen-gen forum like "HOW BIG ARES YOUR P3NISH!!1/!?!??"  I feel sorry for any serious newbies who join and see what a piece of crap this place has become.

That is all.

P.S. DIE N00BS!1!!!!

General Discussion / Re:The Disney Ride: PotC

The one in Florida gyps us because it's not like the one in California, or so I've heard.  They've removed a couple of rooms, so we don't get the full PotC experience.  Bastards!

Incidentally, last time I rode PotC was in May 2000 for Grad Nite-where they close off the Magic Kingdom to high school seniors-at 3am.  There's nothing like screaming "ARRRR!!!" at robot pirates at 3am.

This is a pretty lame story because I didn't really do much exciting stuff in high school.

Anyway one night I was at a party at my friend's house who lived about a block away from an elementary school.  So a bunch of people decided to go out and roam around the neighborhood.  So me and like 5 other people jumped the fence and went running around the school's yard and stuff, which for us being impressionable young kids was exciting.

When we left we saw that some other people had gotten a big rock from somewhere and they put it in the middle of the road.  So this big SUV comes by and everyone is hiding in the shadows and we hear BANG! because the SUV had smashed its underside into the rock.  The guy stopped and got out of the car to see what happened and everyone got scared and ran off.  That was kind of funny.

Thanks, good to know people are enjoying it.  The 2nd part is a little longer, and I tried to branch out and make my own story.  Granted, there are still Monkey Island elements in it, like a resurrected zombie, her henchman, searching for 4 pieces of something, but I tried to make it a little different so it's not a carbon copy of the plot from MI2.  I'll release it within the next couple of weeks.

I've debated it, and it's been long enough so I've decided to publicly release the first game I ever made with AGS, "The Secret of Carver Island."

Now for some explanation.

I went to George Washington Carver Middle School for 6th to 8th grade, and while I was there I started playing adventure games, most notably the Monkey Island games. So, like every other aspiring adventure game creator out there, I wanted to make my own Monkey Island.  I used to pass the time daydreaming about what my school would be like in a Monkey Island universe, substituting teachers for villians and myself for the hero. You know, typical 14-year-old-nerd behavior.

Anyway, I first made this game with Klik and Play, and it sucked. Then when I found AGS a couple of years back I decided that as a test I would try remaking Carver Island.  That test turned into a full game, which is what you are about to download. Since then I decided to make it a trilogy, and have completed the 2nd game. For the past 2 years I've been working on part 3, which explains why all my other proposed games have taken so long. Yes, the cat's out of the bag now.

So enough babbling from me. Enjoy this horrible Monkey Island ripoff, starring me as the main character and all the people I went to school with as the supporting cast.  And please forgive the lack of originality, hotspots, and graphics.  It was my first game, after all.

I may release the 2nd game if people don't hate this one too much.

EDIT:

Here's some screenshots, and also note that this was made 2 years ago so it's a DOS game, which might raise some incompatibility issues.

Pretty much any of the Leisure Suit Larry games.  :P

Hints & Tips / Re:RON: The Chef (Black Dress?)

Well, make sure you've gone to the Realiser to get a "cloth-acquiring tool" and then think about which RON character is famous for wearing black.

Hope that helps!

So, in previous versions of AGS, if you had a conversation it'd go something like this:
*startup dialog*
Ego:Hello!
Man:What do you want?
*option 1* Ego:What can you tell me about the bird?
Man:What do you want to know?
goto-dialog 2

*now we go to dialog 2 which is a list of new questions, but you decide not to ask any right now*

Ego:Never mind, I'll ask later.
Man:Ok.
goto-previous
*at this point you return to the previous topic and previous choices are shown*

But now with the latest version, when returning to the previous topic, it displays the startup dialog again, so you get.
Ego:Never mind, I'll ask later.
Man:Ok.
Ego:Hello!
Man:What do you want?

Is there any way to bypass the startup dialog when returning to the previous topic?

Ahoy maties! I'm sitting in a library at the University of Puerto Rico with my cousin who's dropping a class. Exciting, eh? Just dropped in to greet everyone, hope all the Mitteneers had a good time.  Be back soon.

I don't really know what to say to this, except I have no tears left to cry.

Well, it's been so long since I first made a thread about GZ that it's fallen off the board.

A refresher for n00bs and anyone who may have forgotten:

In a small village in England, things are about to get very weird. A group of zombies mysteriously appear and begin tormenting the town and its residents. Not only that, but Michael Merriweather, grandson of Eunice Merriweather, is kidnapped!

Eunice, having been a famous zombie exterminator in her youth, is mainly known in town as Granny Zombiekiller. However, she has been retired for many years ever since her beloved husband, Arthur, was killed by a zombie. Now, it is up to Granny to rescue her grandson, stop the zombies, and find out who is behind their bloodthirsty rampage.

So here is the very small teaser demo for the game, just to give you an idea of what to expect.  This is like the Freddy Pharkas demo, in that you won't be playing a chunk from the game. This is just a silly little aside quest that has nothing to do with the main plot.

Enjoy!
