If I may just say something: Damn! The original picture was AWESOME! Now I feel like playing "The Dig."

I've done a black paintover outline of Indiana Jones's head (real original, huh) so that I can get an idea of how everything's done. I'm rather impressed with how it came out. Now that I've done this, how do I decide which colors are best to add to the gradient, and how do I create a splatter gradient? I'm using Photoshop CS.

General Discussion / Help Learning to Draw?
Sun 08/05/2011 18:45:08
Here's my situation. I have absolutely no background in drawing and don't know even the simplest techniques. I would like to learn to do pixel art so that I can become a background/sprite artist. At the moment, I am equipped with the original Photoshop CS and Deluxe Paint II and IV.

Can anyone recommend any sources for learning? Also, do I need to learn with a pencil and paper, or can I jump right into using a computer?

I knew it was only a matter of time until this thread was started. I even briefly considered doing it last night.

To me, justice can never be served for the thousands that died at bin Laden's hands. The most excruciating death could not "make up" for what he'd done. I've heard people asking if we had the right to go into another country and kill him. For the safety of thousands, it was necessary. He started the war on terror. We chose to fight it.

I do believe that these events are real, but I would like to see the photographs that were taken. There is no reason that they should not be displayed to the public.

Sorry, we can't say anything about a release date.  :-\
We've been working on the script a lot and added some nice effects - so stay tuned!  :D

BTW: Now you can listen to our version of the main theme on our website:
http://www.night-of-the-meteor.de/en

The music is great. I started laughing at how closely it resembles DOTT. If I may offer a suggestion, though, I'd make the melody louder. During my first listen, I couldn't even hear the resemblance between the original MM theme and this. The second time, I could just barely make it out.

This looks AWESOME!!!

Now that that's done, I wish you guys the best of luck.

You have an awesome voice. And if you suck at piano, it doesn't show. In other words, I think this was a pretty good job  ;).

Before this turns hostile, I just want to point out that the developers are making the right choice - by giving the player the choice. I don't personally like the arcade setup, but I'm sure others do.

Oh my, Karatiana Jones and the Temple of Kombat...

I really don't know what to think of this, to be honest.  Indy leaping about like a frog, doing spin kicks like Bruce Lee?  Is this a late April Fools, by chance?  ???

You already had a functional combat model in the game, but you diverted time to develop this instead?  It's just pretty surreal.

If you're serious about announcers and real time combat like this, a good start would be to scrap the jumping mechanic altogether as it doesn't really DO anything anyway, and then focus on attacks that actually make sense for Indy like using his whip/gun instead of all the kicky-face stuff that he'd never do.  Maybe release this as a separate thing entirely from FoY as it just looks and feels so out of place.

I dunno, I've always been a pretty strong supporter of this project but this just seems really out of place compared to the other wonderful work you guys have put into the game.

I completely agree. I've been following this project for a few years now. This seems really out of place.

I used to have them occasionally from the age of 4 to around 12-13. Sometimes, I'd be in complete control. Usually, though, I was only able to wake myself up at will (using the same technique as Calin.) Since then, I very seldom remember any dreams ever taking place. In the rare event that I have a memorable dream, I almost never have the ability to wake myself. Still, it does happen (though usually only during nightmares.)

I also remember that when I was much younger, I would sometimes have repeat dreams. Usually, I'd be in almost the exact situation. However, I'd realize that the dreams were repeats, and I was better able to control them.

I saw the same information on lucid dreaming a while back. I never got around to testing it, but it does sound interesting. Let us know how it works out for you if you decide to try it.

Thanks for your response. What I'd like is a program that will take constant images of the drive and back them up to another drive. If this is impossible, I'd like one that can at least take several images a day (or even one.)

I'm actually not looking to setup backups for his server. He really just wants me to do this for one of his computers.

Tonight on BBC1: Jon Venables: What Went Wrong?

Just watched it. Really, it makes you wonder why America's system is different than England's. All my life, I've heard of corruption in America's legal system. People aren't convicted of obvious crimes, or they get small sentences for committing big crimes. Since I heard about the Bulger case late last year, I've fallen under the impression that England's system is even worse. Jon Venables and Robert Thompson never got the punishments they deserved. What those in charge failed to understand was that there is a difference between rehab and punishment. Thompson's rehab seems to have been successful. Venables was clearly not. After their rehab, they should have been thrown in jail. Instead, they walked away with new identities. It seems that time and time again, the justice system is spitting in Denise Fergus's face.

Through watching this program, I discovered the case of Derrick Robie, which happened shortly after Bulger's murder. The obvious parallels have been drawn (for example, the backgrounds of Smith and Bulger's murderers.) The one major difference between the two cases was that of Smith's sentence. Smith was sentenced to between nine years to life in prison. Even though he has gone through his rehab, he still remains in jail, having been denied parole five times. Do I believe that Smith has currently suffered an adequate consequence? No. Do I believe that he should, some day, be freed? Probably. Although it's impossible to tell, Smith seems sincere in his apologies and his future intents to help the public. I don't believe that everyone deserves a second chance, especially not murderers of children. Neither I nor anyone else but the victim's families has the right to forgive these murderers. However, once given a second chance, it's nice to see the offender fall out of the spotlight.

Jon Venables has dealt with murder, drugs, fights, recently emerging sex scandals (that were covered up before his initial parole hearing,) and the ownership and distribution of indecent pictures of children. He is up for parole in July of this year. Although it pains me to say so, due to the way that past events have been handled, it seems only likely that he will be freed. This will be another slap in the face to Denise as well as the rest of the good citizens of England.

Although I'm no computer expert, my father has asked me to set up a RAID system for one of his computers at his office. He's had it with the (seemingly crappy and expensive) company that manages his systems, and likes me to manage systems when possible. Recently, his server's HD failed, and the three backup HDs that were supposed to be keeping backups were setup incorrectly by the IT guys.

He told me that he already has a copy of Ghost, though he could never figure out how to set it up. Is Ghost really the best program to use? I've read that Acronis True Image is better and faster, and is relatively cheap. Can anyone tell me why it's better? Also, how does Clonezilla compare to these products? I'm hesitant to use it because it's free (although I'm admittedly a big fan of free software.) Does Clonezilla constantly backup the HD, or does the user need to tell it to make a backup? Also, how hard is this process? Do I just change the HD jumpers (assuming he wants to use an internal drive) and run the program from the BIOS? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry, but I used the adjective well to describe the noun (English, specifically that of Mati) as being "satisfactory or good" (definition 7). I don't exactly see the problem there. Even if others did contest me, I would still defend it as being accurate spoken grammar within the laws of common Amerikaan English.

I apologize. I meant nothing more than a simple joke, and I should have realized that anyone (including yourself) could have easily misperceived it. I really meant nothing more than that.

Also, having looked at your definition, I admit that your usage does appear to be correct, though I was taught to use "good" in that situation. I guess I'm guilty as charged.

Regardless of who is the troll or not. You don't have to constantly pick on me. If you don't like what I post then you don't have to respond with a negative attitude.

I remember a very similar thread you created a long time ago. In it, you asked why everyone makes fun of you. In the end, we revealed that one of the main reasons is that you don't take the time to proofread your posts. If you don't submit correctly-spelled, somewhat grammatically correct (I admit that I can be guilty of the latter) posts, no one is going to take you seriously. It tells everyone that you don't care about the community.

It's actually quite funny. Last time I used that image, it was in response to one of Icey's quotes. I forgive you, though.

Anyway Icey, do what I do. If you can't spell something correctly, look up the word. Use Dictionary.com or Google. Also, you should have a spell-checker installed at ALL TIMES!

I have a WinXP Pro SP1 format disk that I've been using for the last few years. Every time I use it, I have to manually update to SP3 and add all of the security updates from Microsoft's website. Would it be possible for me to create a new format disk that includes all of these updates? This would really save me a few hours each reformat. Any advice is appreciated.

Edit: Solved. I discovered nLite. It does exactly what I want.

General Discussion / Re: DOS Emu for wii

I wouldn't say that any of this is a total lost cause. There was recently brief talk about AGS eventually going open-source. While I can't see that happening for a very long time, I'm sure that it will at one point. From then on, the games will likely be portable, and slowly be ported to work with ScummVm. However, this will likely not happen for a very, VERY long time.

I'm confident that if he lightened the hat, the jacket would look better to you.  It's the contrast that does it.

Compare to this sprite:

The jacket is a bit lighter here, but the hat is A LOT lighter.  That contrast makes all the difference.

Perfect  :).

Don't know that I agree with you on your assessment on the jacket, though.  The Raiders jacket is a fickle thing, but it certainly appears very dark in most scenes.  Perhaps Quo's jacket could be a hair lighter, but it's not too bad.  The fedora, on the other hand, is far far far darker than it should be.

I guess you're right about the jacket. I'm so used to seeing the FoA and LC sprites that I associated the color with "real" Indy. I still think it should be a little lighter.

I know I'm late on this, but I want to say that I love how the gun holster moves in Indy's walking animation.
