Critics' Lounge / Re: Backgrounds for C&C

Thanks for the reply.
The doors are supposed to be quite huge and the handles are now around the characters chest.
I'll try making them wider and see how that works...

My main issue with door is the frame around it. Somehow it doesn't look right.

EDIT: See last reply for newest update...

Hi

I've just finished these two backgrounds and now I want to hear for you think I can do to improve them.
Both backgrounds are located in the Dark Mountains which are a place where there is a lot of evil things going on.

Here I really have problems with the door.

The back space in the bottom in for the gui.

EDIT: I've changed the headline because a lot of people seems to be posting their backgrounds right now...
Thanks

Enough about that cat!

To reply on the actual topic of this thread:
Maybe you don't have to limit yourself. Maybe you just need to slice your project into smaller pieces.
That way you'll have 3-4 medium games instead of one huge. That way you'll get a rewarding feeling you get when you finish and release each piece and that might motivate you to do the next piece. Plus your projects won't reach the size where you can't finish them.

That was what I did with my Silent Knight project. I had the story for a big game figured out to begin with and then I just took one chapter at the time. I didn't have any experience with AGS when I started the first chapter. Right now I'm working on the last chapter. So I guess that was the way to go for me.

I don't know if that'll work for you but it's one way to go and it worked for me. Good luck...

Hardware:

GC-2 mic
My beloved Les Paul
Behringer ultragain linemixer
Steinberg VSL2020 sound card

Software:

Cubase SX
Reason 3.0
ReCycle
Adobe Audition for mastering

But I must admit for the game music I do I mostly just use Reason. But that'll change in my next game.

Thanks for the nice tutorials. I see myself using them later on.
That dog character rocks.

Wow, this is getting quite good.
You've really done a good job Vict0r
One small thing: I think the writing on the box looks a little too drawn-with-a-mouse-like if you get my point. Especially on the big box. I don't know if you actually can fix this...
Anyway it's a small thing, other than that it looks great.

Like Andail said: Make him bounce a little.
If you compare him with the doors of the buildings he seems a little too small. But maybe that's just me.

I really dig your style. Your character is flawless (except for the above) I usually think that a lot of black lines ruins a background but in your case it looks really good. I'd like to see a game in that.
I like that the character is such a small part of the background.

After request I've made a walkthrough for this game.
So if you are stuck in the game you can find help here:

Very nice background. I can't put a finger on it.
But I'll have to agree that making characters for it is going to be rather difficult.

I could write up a tutorial on just how easy it is in 3DS MAX--my 3D platform of choice--but I'm not sure if this is the right place or time. But if people are interested, I'll take the time, cuz writing tutorials is kinna fun! :) It's all about Gradient Ramps set to Lighting and Solid, for those who know MAX. Trust me.
I am just learning 3ds Max and I would love to see that...

Try to look around in your own bedroom and imagine it without any stuff.
There would be more in the room. Like a radiator, more electric outlets (or whatever those things are called in English). And like Andail said: Get rid of the celling and make the door bigger...

As you guys allready mentioned the player won't notice if the arcitecture of a building isn't perfect. The player will automaticly figure out that if he/she walks out of a door in the first screen and comes into the next screen through a door then it is the same door.
If you are making a cartoony game I don't think it will matter at all. It might be a little more important in serious games like 5DaS.
I don't say that you should not consider making your buildings make sense but I for one have never really given much though into this issue. I guess that's why my games suck...

Best Idea - Andail. Like everybody said; it has a nice mood to it and is a real beauty.

Best Design - Andail again. For some of the same reasons as before. I wish I could make stuff like that...

Best Functionality - Seaduck and Renegade Implementor are really close here.  But I'll go for Renegate since I would hate to animate the character climbing on the that ladder.

Best Technique - I like both Andail and Rel's a lot but I'll go for Krysis. Really nice tracing...

Cheers

Oh right ... They sound very similiar though!

How do you get past the boss on the first stage?

Spoiler
Just shoot the bombs to stop them. And then fire them back at the boss a couple of times

Pablo+Billy G: Thanks guys...

Thank you very much everybody for the nice comments. It's great to hear you like it...

Zor - The sounds were not taken from Doom. Most of them I've made myself by burping and farting into my microphone. The gunshot is taken from some free-sounds-internet-site. I've made all the music myself...

cheers

Thanks alot Zor and Iv4n...

Zor - after trying your shooter engine from the coding comp. I might even consider making a longer game in the same style.

Morzesh - I'm sorry to hear that...

I don't mean to be a bitch but Zor stole my idea from my game Mafioso Overkill.
But he made it better so I guess it's allright. Plus he is helping other people with his code.
I guess He's forgiven.
My latest game of this kind made in AGS can be found here (if you do not believe me):

I don't hope that I've made anybody mad by going a little off-topic, but I just needed to whine a little...

EDIT:
Sorry Zor, I didn't mean to upset you. Stole may be a too harsh word. I just wanted to say that I you did a good job expanding my idea. And I think that's these forum are all about: improving through eachother.

Hello
This one is actually going to be used in my next game. So it wasn't actually designed for this competition. But it fits quite well so I'll join in:

cheers

Edit by He-man: Thanks, I didn't notice that it was oversized...

I was playing for about 15 minutes on that level and he just woulnt die! Something i had to do with the bombs?

It has to do with the bombs.
Spoiler
I won't tell you exactly what to do. But you can stop the bombs by shooting them once. And throw them back by shooting them once more...

Olé everybody!

I've just made this small shooter game called Operation Novi 2D.
The game was originally made for a small exhibition on my university where it ended up as the main attraction.

You are Heroman. Sent by the president to stop an university experiment that has gone wrong. This includes killing a lot of brain eating clones and a few actual university teachers...

The game is made in AGS so I thought I would share it with you.
It works alot like my very first game made with AGS Mafioso Overkill if anyone of you remember that. If you don't the game is all about shooting everything that moves.
I hope you like it....

Main menu

Screenshot...

The game features:
4 different levels that can be played on 3 different difficulties.
Photorealistic backgrounds.
Cutscenes with lots of attitude.
Bad music
16 bit colour
640/480 pixels
Lots of fun for the entire familly...

The game can be downloaded from here:

Please let me know what you think of it...

I know this have been asked before but it seems the page has been changed since then because the surgested solutions from then didn't work.

I want to add my game to this page but the page keep telling me that I need to log on to the forum.
I have added three games before so it doesn't really make any sense.
Please help me out here...
