I know I am pretty new here so feel free to ignore this if you want:)

I would love to write articles/reviews or anything else you want. I do have some writing experience, though granted it is fiction as opposed to what you are asking for here, but I'd love to get involved. Heres my email:

This will hopefully be my second game using AGS. It was started almost as soon as I finished Haunted Hollow so it is still pretty earlier in development but I do have a few rooms done so I thought I would post some of them here so people can get an idea of the style of the game.

Story:

Freda has lived alone, lost in her own little world of soap operas and daytime television for most of her life. One early evening in spring, the reception on her TV set suddenly goes off right in the middle of her favourite soap opera: Poplar Street.

Little does she know that martian invaders have launched an attack on the earth. And little do the invaders know that they have just made the biggest mistake of their lives...

The game will be quite long, involving more puzzles animation and characters than my previous game.

I'm not sure when this will be finished as there is still a long way to go. Hopefully, it will not be too long :)

Sorry for not replying earlier Sunshinegold:

Spoiler
At the gates to the manor, inteact with the manor sign on the fence. Two wires inside are broken; seal them with sticky tape from the poster in AJ's bedroom. After that pull down the switch and the gates should open allowing you access to the manor.

This is something I would jump at the chance to help moderate or run in someway. I don't think I have the required skills to implement it (being a little lacking in website design ability and so on).

If there was such a thing in place though, I agree that it would a very useful thing to have, and I'm sure that would be a lot of people more than happy to contribute.

M0ds makes a very good point in that there is already a lot of good awards systems in place and any more would detract from those already in place.

It does bring me onto something I have been wondering about however. I have not been a member of the AGS community for very long so I have a good idea of the community from a newcomers perspective, and one thing that sticks out is how well represented and established it is. Games are produced by members on a regular basis and the great majority of them are to high standards and well worth downloading. There are review sites, ezines, awards systems - in fact pretty much everything that I can think of is already in place and taken care of very professionally.

My question then, is what can newcomers contribute that isn't already done superbly elsewhere? Is there anything left to add?

I was wondering what the opinion of long-time members of the community was on this, and if there are any suggestions on what, if anything, is sorely lacking in the community.

wannabe:

Spoiler
There is a box on the floor underneath the tool board. First look at it. The message will advise that there is something heavy at the bottom of it. Interact with it and you should find a crowbar. Use this on the school window.

Spoiler
To get into the school, you need something from one of the sheds.

tootsie:

Spoiler
You need something small to remove the gum. When you get into the school, have a look around the top of the teacher's desk.

Downloaded it, and it's a nice game. But should it really start outside the church with the dog? It does for me...

That was after I fixed a few things and due to my own stupidity uploaded the wrong version. I fixed it again pretty quick but you must have downloaded in between the two uploads.

Sorry about that  :-\

nope!:

Spoiler
The coin is located in the museum, just hunt around for it, you will find it.

DJ:

Yep, slight bug I suppose, just need to change a message.

Spoiler
You can still get into the school however, but you need a specific item to get you in through the window. If you know how to get into the school sheds, you should be able to find the right item.

great game so far, but I'm afraid that I'm stuck

Spoiler
I'm no sure what to do with the dog in front of the church.  I keep trying to combine the flower that makes me sleepy with the meat, but it won't let me.

Here's a hint that should help...

Spoiler
The flower is one ingredient in a recipe you need to make up. The recipe can be found in a place of learning.

I'm stuck on the same problem. Can't find the backdoor key.

First:

Spoiler
Someone left a note to tell the household where the key will be. Think of a place where messages might be left and look closely in that place.

If you are still really stuck:

Spoiler
Look at all the fridge magnets

I also uploaded a newer version of the game which should fix a few problems I found.

Spoiler
When I use the cup in the mud, and give it to Bernie, AJ says "aah, what the heck"
[close]

What do he mean by that?

Spoiler
He is looking for HOT chocolate, not cold mud... You need to do something else to the mud first.

I can't exit the screen which appears when I look at the church door.  This screen has a chewing gum blocking the coin slot.  Also in the school lab when I use cupboard I find a beaker but it does not appear in the inventory.  I need to fill the beaker with water and boil it with the bunsen burner.

Spoiler
You exit the coin slot screen by interacting with the bottom right of the screen. Exit should appear when you are over the right area.

The beaker in the cupboard is not needed.

Hope that helps.

EDIT: If you use the steak with the church window, he says he wont go near the dog and turn. Now the GUI is locked and cursor is changed to an arrow. You can't do anything.  :'(

Sorry about that :(

Not sure why that was happening, but I think I have fixed it now and replaced the file.

I have finally finished my first game - The Mystery of Haunted Hollow.

The game follows the adventures of a boy named AJ, who, during one dark night, unravels a mystery that has surrounded his home town for centuries.

It is available for download at

http://www.freewebs.com/hauntedhollow/Hollow.zip

I think it will be a pretty slow download considering where it is hosted, but the file isn't huge (1.2MB) so hopefully it won't be too long a dl.

I am pretty sure I have crushed any bugs in the game but I apologise in advance if there are any that I missed.

Hope you enjoy it. :)

EDIT: The link doesn't work for some reason so the best bet is to go to:

http://www.freewebs.com/hauntedhollow

And use the download link at the bottom of the page.

EDIT 2:

A big thanks to jannar85 who has been kind enough to offer a mirror for downloading the game which should be quicker than the terrible freewebs site.

Final update to announce that the game is almost done. See the first post. :)

The screenshots look great (especially the one in the village with the heads on sticks), and the game sounds very promising overall.

Good luck with the development and I look forward to playing the game.

General Discussion / Re:My trip to egypt

I know what you mean about the size of Tut's tomb. It was a real surprise to go in and see just how small it was, despite being one of the most famous historical sights in the world. Some of the other tombs were more impressive, though my memory is very hazy and I forget the names of the others.

As for the bartering, I didn't really get the hang of that through the entire trip until the last couple of days when I spent about 40 minutes in a shop bartering for a gold cartouche. I think I got a good deal, but then, I'm too naieve for my own good sometimes so I probably paid twice what it was worth :)

I would definitely go back to Egypt. In fact I was planning to go back this year with my wife but she is not too keen so it fell through. I'll have to keep on for some time in the future.

Very nice.

Brings back some good memories of my own trip to Egypt about five years ago now.

I didn't go to Cairo though, I went to Luxor so I missed out on the Pyramids but got to see the Valley of the Kings and Karnak and Luxor temples. It is an experience I will never forget.

Best of luck. I know from experience how difficult it can be to find a job (harder still to find one you actually enjoy) so I hope it all goes well. :)
