So how can a channel become null? I assumed it was when it hasn't been assigned a clip or has stopped playing one, but if that's not the case, then I'm not sure I understand what a channel being null means :-[.

Thank you all for the patience and helpful tips otherwise :).

I arrived at the same thing by trial and error in the meantime, but I guess I still don't understand how it works :). Now I'm having trouble with this line of code for instance:

Code: ags
else if (Music != null && music1 != null) {
    if (Music.ID != music1.PlayingClip.ID) music1 = Music.Play (eAudioPriorityNormal, eRepeat);
    }

Again, I would get a null pointer error on the second line occasionally. But if music1 isn't null, wouldn't it mean that it must be playing some instance of a clip, so music1.PlayingClip.ID can't be null either? Or what is the null pointer I'm referencing this time? How many potential null pointers do I have to check every time I want to play new music? :)

I'm getting this error message on this line of code:

I'm referencing a null pointer when specifically checking for null pointers?!

Music is an AudioClip, music1 is an AudioChannel, they're both defined in Global variables. Sorry if I'm not providing enough context, not sure what is relevant here. Thanks to anyone who can help! Trying to handle sound in AGS has been giving me a headache.

A side question, why is the jam being hosted on Itch.io this year instead of Gamejolt?

AFAIK Gamejolt has become pretty strict on adult content, and the organizers of the jam wanted to maintain creative freedom. I'm not sure games like The Gay Agenda would have been possible to publish on GameJolt.

I played Honza's The Witch's Lullaby, the overall winner of the Jam. This is an amazing short/medium game. The graphics, story, music, story and characters are all top notch. I also think this one has the best pixel hunt mechanic I've ever seen. Highly recommended!

Thanks for playing, glad you liked it!

Congratulations Honza. I’m sad to say I haven’t had a chance to check out any of the entries yet, but I will definitely get around to The Witch’s Lullaby as soon as I can.

Thank you, let me know what you think once you've had a chance to play.

The results have been out for a week and The Witch's Lullaby ranked #1 :-D! Still planning to make some updates to it, but hoping to add it to the AGS website in a foreseeable future (*hoping* being the key word ;)).

All the games in the top 10 or so are worth playing. My personal favorite is unsurprisingly The Telwynium Book Two, but there's a lot of really fun games - I can also recommend Where Wolf?, The Gay Agenda, Stowaway, Oh My God and Last Christmas.

EDIT: I almost forgot Ghost V! Liked that one a lot too, it's light on puzzles, but it has great retro sci-fi atmosphere.

Thanks, guys! And thank you for the bug report Creamy, fixed it in my local version, should be uploading it with a new update soon-ish.

I submitted an AGS game to this one. It's kinda King's Questy, so if you're into pretty fantasy forests, you should have fun with it :).

I'll add it to the AGS database once I decide to stop updating it.

The ambivalent news - I'm not yet sure I will be releasing it for free. As I wrote above, I would like to publish a short game anthology commercially, and LitT will be part of that package. So we'll see once it's done - chances are I'll only publish an updated version of the demo and leave the rest for the commercial release. Then again, I'm excited to see people play it, so who knows, maybe I'll cave :).
I'm perpetually short on money. :( I mean really.
But maybe I could be a beta tester in exchange?

I'll definitely be looking for testers eventually, so I'll try to keep the offer in mind. Good luck with your game, sounds like it could be interesting! Anyway, I've already been reminded that we are getting a bit off topic here, so let's keep this thread focused on Truth be Trolled (which means inactive for now I'm afraid). Feel free to DM me though!

Just to clarify for others, we were talking about this game: Long in the Tooth on GameJolt. Offtopic over!

By the way, how is "Long in the Tooth" going? I have seen that you posted a small update recently, but before there were no updates for a long time...

Well, there's good news and... ambivalent news? The good news is, I'm hard at work at it! I even made a bet with a friend to meet certain benchmarks at certain times, and I don't intend to lose it ;). So it looks like that game is well on its way to being finished.

The game is currently in stasis and will probably remain there for at least a year. I've decided to release a smaller commercial game first, hopefully by the end of 2022 - it will be a collection of loosely tied short stories, including (but not limited to) enhanced versions of my jam games. This time I'll make sure to make an "in production" post only once the game is well on its way to completion to avoid unrealistic promises.

As for Truth be Trolled, I really, really hope I eventually figure out a way to finish it without it taking 10 years. From the start, the idea was to make an adventure game I would really like to play, so nobody wants to see it come to life more than me. But it was an insane overreach for somebody who has never published anything else before, and seeing how fast I can make progress with smaller games, the temptation to work on those instead and possibly have a game published by this time next year is too strong. Sorry if this is disappointing, but hey - "in stasis" isn't the same as "dead"! I've sunk more than two years and hundreds of hours into this game, and I still love the story, the characters and the setting, so it has to happen sooner or later! Meanwhile, here's a Christmas elf troll :).

Merry Christmas everyone!

Apologies for the slight delay! We've got a tie in second place, with Sinitrena's and Creamy's charming entries receiving 9 points each. It's worth noting that each entry was voted in first place at least once, so all participants have found their audience :). There is only one winner though, and it is...

stylez75 - Randle McMurphy from "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" by Ken Kesey

Congratulations, Stylez! If you ever decide to make that Cuckoo's Nest game, please consider me for playtesting :). Here's an appropriately bookish trophy:

Thanks to everyone for participating and voting!
#76
Last day to vote! I'll count the votes and announce the winner tomorrow.
#77
Alright, it's voting time! Here are the three entries:

Sinitrena - Impey Barbicane from "From the Earth to the Moon" by Jules Verne

stylez75 - Randle McMurphy from "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" by Ken Kesey

Creamy - the Green Child from "the Green Child" by Herbert Read

Please rank all three entries with 1) being the best and 3) being the... least best ;), eg. 1) Entry Z, 2) Entry Y, 3) Entry X. Voting will continue until December 20th, the winner will be announced on December 21st.

I played this game last night. It was a really good experience: outstanding graphics and mood; the music actually got my pulse racing to keep on going! everything was just perfectly done for what it is. As Jon said, the strength is not the puzzles but the storytelling and that aspect is completely aced. I would see the puzzles as a way of making the story more interactive than just sitting back and watching.

Loved it! Not much I can add what hasn't been said already. I agree with the praise! I might add that the language fit the period real well and I enjoyed how you played around with the old English. I think that the story was so well written that a very difficult puzzle might have interrupted it too much, the easy puzzles paced it nicely. What luck that you came by such fitting music! The game was also just the right length for a cup of coffee.  :)

Thanks for the kind words guys, happy you enjoyed the story! The amazing Asia Cybele made the music for us, check out her stuff here - "Ritualia" and "Sonus Somniferi" are from Ossuarium, "Once Upon a Time remix" was intended for the game but didn't make the cut. We also used a track by Adam Halpin (one he originally made for Truth be Trolled) for the menu screen.

Oh and by the way, a new version of the game (v1.2) is out! There is a brand new puzzle in the first scene, so Marie has a little more to do now. If anyone has downloaded the game but not played yet, please get the new version - apart from the extra puzzle, it should be a bit more polished overall.

Loosely based on the Green Child by Herbert Read

Thank you for the contribution, Creamy. I have to admit I've never heard of the Green Child - so I don't know, are those gloves or bloody hands? Would she be the player character in the hypothetical game? In any case, cool sprite!

Well, it seems we have a proper competition! I'll close the submissions thread and start the voting tomorrow. If anyone still wants to contribute until then, please do! There's still plenty of time till tomorrow and I'll probably only get to it in the evening ;).

Nice, thank you for the contribution! Interesting choice of character and great game adaptation potential. You made it easy with the photo, so here's my guess:

Spoiler
Randle McMurphy from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey, movie adaptation by Miloš Forman. I only ever read the first two pages of the book or so when I found it lying around my brother's room in my early teenage years. Love the movie though! It would really make for an interesting game, and it's well-suited for a point and click. The "distract the orderly" puzzles write themselves :).

EDIT: Actually, you made it even easier with the filename ;).
