Atelier, I'd like to ask if you could extend the deadline by a few days.
Firstly, February is a short month, this one has just 28 days - that's two days of extension.
Then if you could add a few more days, how you normally add if someone asks for extension of the mags.
Thanks.

I'm sure the other participants will also want the deadline extended; well, not all but some.

My game is at this stage in terms of progress:
99% graphics
80% story
25% programming
0% music and sound
-I've finished almost everything, except of course programming. I have to implement it all in these few days. In terms of sound and music, that depends upon the time left. I am planning to do a "deluxe" version of the game after the mags, since this one will obviously not be so good.

Hi AnasAdbin,
I'm not sure about your case now, since your game is already on Steam Greenlight, so changing names could maybe be risky - but if I were you, I would definitely change the name of my game.

The way I name my games is the opposite of what is advised and suggested.
Most people say that it should be short. But I believe that it is very hard to name something in a short word, because almost everyone names everything that way. Hence, it's not really original.
Though, there are some rules, which should still be followed, but if you think outside of the box, your work will be more original and more personal. It would feel as if, even if it is unsuccessful, whatever you are creating, it is special.
Here are some titles I came up with for my previous projects(many I gave up on): My TV works on Miasma; Town of Tomorrow or the Computer Apocalypse; All pigs deserve to burn in hell; Pyrrhus won the war (in the end); Cool Winds (which brought us magic); Never forget the thought of freedom.

In the end, though, the title of a work is not really important compared to the work itself.

Congratulations! Best wishes to you from a fellow AGSer! 8-)

Ahoy, matey!

Edit: I've modified it so the background is transparent for my forum avatar.

Thanks. :) The person whose character the being on his left belongs to had an avatar of an anenome with sunglasses.  I was told that I could do anything with the body, so I went overboard. (laugh) It's part anenome, part chicken, part giraffe, and part crocodile.  And it's going to have a big part in the plot. :)
What a phenomenal character! (laugh)
Time is drawing near...
At some point I lost motivation, because I thought no one was going to participate - how wrong have I been! (wtf)

^this is one of the crazy characters from my game. He is a slaver. That which he is holding in his hand is a whip. And he doesn't hesitate to use it. He is nuts!

@Hobo That android, robot, looks creepy!
I'm so happy you guys joined the mags, it's a lot more fun now. :-*
Here's my screenshot for today:

Looks outstanding and concept sounds interesting. Good luck finishing it, can't wait to enjoy this world.
+1;
also, I'm curious, is it going to have similar gameplay to Providence (with keyboard movement and minimalistic puzzles)? Or is it a "pure" point and click adventure game? Or something totally different?

Great! 8-)
For purposes of making this post less empty, here's a screenshot of the newest background I drew, and the inventory, on which I'm still working on:

I'm very certain that I am going to finish this game project on time!

Thanks for replying Atelier.

(...)the save/load menu you describe doesn't sound like anything over and above that included in the default AGS template. If two lines of code are so trivial in nature, as to be something that all entrants can reasonably be expected to create or dowse from a template, it will probably be ok. Unless of course those two lines form a substantial part of the distinctiveness or operation of the game, and that is the critical question.
I'm not sure if it is as substantial - this is how it works:

  • When the player moves the cursor at the top of the screen a small floppy disk icon appears.
  • When you click on it opens a save/restore game window.
  • And also, there is a custom autosave function; when the game autosaves the floppy disks blinks* a few times to show the player that it has saved the game in "autosave" slot.
*this is done via Tween module

Tell me to remove from the game whatever breaks the rules, Atelier. Thanks.

Granted, but you flew too close to the Sun, your wings burned down.
I wish I could read other humans' minds.

A question regarding GUI: I have a created, a long time ago, my own custom saving system, with one small floppy disk icon at the top right corner of the screen, which opens a save/load menu after the player clicks on it. And I've left it like that for all my future games, so I don't have to bother around that much. Hence, it is a template of sorts.
Quote from: Atelier on Sun 01/02/2015 19:20:52
(...)templates are also allowed.
(...)
Do I have to make a new custom way of saving; program a brand new UI for that, or can I just use this one?
Also, I have this one click do everything cursor I made for All pigs deserve to burn in hell; can I keep it? Or do I have to create a new one?
Quote(...)You are not allowed to use material already created before this competition(...)
In summary, can cursor and save/restore game UI be an exception to this rule?

Hey bluecuppers,
I've started working on my entry for this MAGS:

Pyrrhus won the war (in the end)
I don't want to say anything about the story or gameplay yet, except that it will have a lot of gladiator arena fights. (nod)

I've implemented the first background in the game; which is mostly supposed to introduce the protagonist.
This is how it looks like in game:

Basically, it's an army camp, with soldiers resting, walking around or talking with each other. And
Spoiler
the main character is also a soldier

The setting of the game will be sci-fi crossed with fantasy, due to me not wanting to make something that has any connections with this world. Although, there will be metaphors here and there... ahem.
In terms of progress, I've also finished 2 more backgrounds (not yet in game) and drawn around 70 different sprites for characters and objects. Those are mostly walk cycle animations. At first I planned for around 10 different characters to be in the game. Many of which will be side, stock characters (e.g. soldiers).
A lot of work a head - very little time!

This is one greyhead.
Greyheads are soldiers for the Wrong Union, which is a union of states with intolerance ideology and dictatorship.
On the other side is the Union, which exists solely to stop the violent warring of the Wrong Union. This setting sounds familiar, right?

Also before anyone gets too excited, I am not remaking any of the games.
(...)
I was already too excited when I read the name of the thread and noticed the reprises of old Ben Jordan backgrounds and the developer of Ben Jordan being the creator of the thread and this not being in Critics' Lounge thread.
After reading this sentence I am very disappointed.
Yours sincerely,
avid Ben Jordan fan

Ps. Smailholm background is my favorite from those.
Ps.2. The case 4 background looks obviously a lot better than the original background. But, I feel the original one is a lot better due claustrophobic feeling it provided and the big door being the only thing in the background, when I played the game it looked quite scary. I feel as if when improved, this background loses the touch it had when it was a lot simpler. I could be wrong though, since I'm not a graphical artist.

Now that I think about it
Spoiler
it would actually spoil the puzzle if the tutorial told you that.
Although, if this is going to be a lengthier game, where there would be more of these kind of puzzles (which involve combining trolls), it wouldn't be a terrible thing to just show a tutorial message when you get the second troll free, which tells you that you can combine trolls.
It's just an idea though, maybe it's better if it stays as it is.

There's no snow here in Dystopialand, where I live. I envy you! :-( :-X
#217
I've just finished it. Since I didn't play the demo before this was my first experience of Troll Song, and I have to say it's very good.
I didn't go through tutorial so at one point I was stuck:
Spoiler
The before the last puzzle puzzle when you have to click on both trolls to combine them, I didn't know that was possible; I assume this is probably explained in tutorial?
[close]
Also, I really like the "show the hotspot" function, since my monitor brightness is normally low, this was very useful. Great work, Dave and the team, I can't wait for the next installment. :-)
And, great voice acting; the leading troll (Clod?), had the best voice acting for now, in my opinion.

Thanks, everyone :) How would you say was it? Easy to get everything right the first time around? Or did you get a royal ass-kicking? I had a lot of fun coming up with and putting together these "Fatalities" (laugh)

BSP: Yeah! If I didn't have to work, sleep, eat and poop, I'd be so much more productive. Not to mention blinking! When they start digitizing people -- a thing they've long been theorizing about, to rid us of the burdens of physicality -- I'll be second in line. You know, just in case something goes terribly wrong with Ray Kurzweil (who's first in line), so I could back out :P

I've searched it on internet recently, and I had no idea that such thing as digital immortality existed as an idea. Thanks for the insight Fitz, now I only have to hope that this atheist heaven would be invented during my lifetime and also be somehow accessible to me.

On topic: I've played the demo today and my comment would be that you did a great work, at least in this demo, with making losing the game event not be so much punishing, as it can be in some games.
