Critics' Lounge / Little animation
Sun 28/03/2004 13:26:34
I'm just working on some little 3 sec. animations and i'm posting first one here (it's not colored and there's no sound yet)- it's 120 kb.
Since i was really enjoying working on this year's new year's Flash greeting card, i decided to make those little anims in the same style (even better, since i must finish them really fast and this style is quick to animate).

What do you think?

EDIT- i added the girl infront of the smoke... i think it works better this way.

I'd like to compliment your work. Absolutely beautiful! Great backgrounds and character work.
Not only is the game shaping up brilliantly, but i also like the way you are working- i almost can't believe it's just "amateur" project ("underground" would be probably better word here ;)).
Actually, i'd love to join your team, but sadly don't have time...
Anyway, my hat goes off to you!

Really great work, as always!
I think it's perfect and don't have any critics. Ok, maybe just a little one about hair animation. When the character moves back up, he stops a bit, but the hair stays in "down" position- it would be a good idea to move them back up in original position, as it would make animation a bit more dynamic and realistic.
Other than that- amazing!

My new web site don't have tutorials section, but i kept the old ones on net. You can get them here: http://maniac.adventuredevelopers.com/tutorials/tutorialsmain.htm

They might still be of some use.

It would probably be better if i'd say: "for technique that you chose"... drawing with mouse is a pain ;)
Of course, there's always room for improvements, but since this is learning "experiment", i don't think there's really a need to change it any more (as it's already great). It would be better to just move on new animation... that's the best way to practice.

I already really liked the animation before, but yes, it looks even better with those fixes. I think it's now perfect for the style you chose :)

I, you, Steve Purcell or anybody else can't possibly know how the game would have fared on the market. Lucasarts decided it would do badly, and so it is fully legitimate to cancel the project. Whether their reasons to do so are valid or not is irrelevent. They made a decision, and they acted according to it. I could not have expected them to do otherwise.

Yes, they made a decision, but they made a poor one, that's the whole point. I know i'd be pretty pissed if i'd be sweating on a project like this for 2 years and then some new suit would come along and say "sorry guys... it looks good, but it won't sell". This is not only ignorant to us players (who were teased with big promises), but especially to developing team.

Very (very!) good!
The lip synch is great and the expressions of character, as he talks, too. As a matter of fact, i don't have any critics. I'd only suggest you to learn animating on paper. Once you'll grasp this, you'll find out how much easier it is, than animation on computer... Ok, depends on what kind of animation are you after- Flash with its symbols and tweening is ideal for animating "paper-cut" look... though, it's not quite as pleasant to look at as classic, frame by frame, one

They are all fantastic, so it's hard to choose...

But i'd say Klaus's is the most appropriate- it's simple and with just enough measure of modern and oldschool design, to be pleasing to the eye while not being flooded with unnecessary details.

As for logo... it's tough choice too. I like the simplicity of Loominous's design, while the colors and pics of Darth's logo (A) might suit better Klaus's web site...

Really fantastic work!
Great details- wood in particularl is very good.
I don't really have any serious critique- if i'm picky i'd agree that bed and a few other details stick out from pic a bit too much, but it's not that big of a problem. Still, if you'd bother to additionally work on image... those are the areas worth to take care of :)

EDIT: oh, you just posted edited version- great,  it does look better. I'd make corner of pillow a bit more higlighted though (less than in previous version of course- but so it makes a bit of contrast).

Great scene! Agree about lamp light though.

On my monitor the picture looks significantly brighter than on the monitor I am using at this moment - so, it's a difficult thing to choose ... should I brighten the whole scene a bit? I don't know, I will probably let it as it is...

The scene on itself is bright enough (as it's supposed to be darker), the problem is, there are almost no higlights. Trick with dark scenes is, to make them look dark, without actually being dark- that's where higlights and contrast come in handy. I think lamp would serve that purpose very nicely- let it have stronger light that will affect other (darker) objects in room more (not too much- maybe just their "corners", so they won't completely sink into darkness).

First of all- this is a great illustration and i think it's perfect in what it does... so, i don't think it really needs any changes.

But, *if* i'd change something, it would be adding just a little bit more depth to castle.
Here's a quick edit i did in Flash:

I don't know- the image lose a bit of color simplicity this way, so it might not be what you want.

Damn... Jenna Jameson with pig's nose. What more do you want? ;)

If you're really interested in it, I could try to convert the CD into an ISO file and put it into my DC++ folder. My average upload speed is 3 KB/s though, so it could take quite a long time to download.
If it's not too much work for you, it would be great :) My German is so rusty it hurts (that's what you get from sleeping during classes), but better German than nothing.

I was looking for this game for quite some time... is it in english?
#215
Damn it... i didn't know it's now possible to import pics with alpha channel in AGS (i just tried it out and it works like charm)!
Ugh.. i guess that that means re-importing all characters in ignac again (the effect is just too good not to use it...).

Did somebody mentioned titties?

Oh, and nice design! :) I really like how everything is (more or less) available from the index page. Great

Very good!
First one: great details and nice coloring (the nose especially stand out nicely). The only thing, that i'm not very fond of, are highlights. Their blurriness and "accuracy" somehow clash with other sharper, and a bit "grainy", coloring- it's a thing that screams "computer coloring"... which is a shame as the rest of the painting looks very natural.

Second- love it, have no critic (even though, i like black&white one even better).

Penguinx- please do, i'd love to see it :)
Yeah, black&white comics are my favorite too. The play of black and white can make it so much more dramatic and interesting (also lines stand out more)... too bad i'm not able to use that in this comic.

Jaz- thanks! While i really appreciate your compliments, i must say, there are quite some here in AGS community that can kick my butt in their drawing field/style any day :) That's the beauty of this community i guess- it's a mix of everything (programming, drawing, music...)

DM- cool! :) Haven't seen this movie for a very long time. I'll try to find some photos of him.

Thanks again! :)

Esseb, it's for National Geographic Junior magazine. It's National Geographic for kids. There's one page dedicated to comic.

Penguinx- thanks! As you probably know i admire your work as well :) Actually i'm using markers too (Staedtler Pigment Liner). I bought brush quite some time ago (a bit difficult to get used to and it takes some time to get results right... it pays off later though), but after i got more in animation i stoped using it completely and got so used to markers, that i decided to use them for this comic too. I kinda like the control you have over lines with them, even though it might be a bit tedious sometimes to make them look spontaneous.

Big Brother- yeah, i always liked bony (old?) hands- it somehow makes them more interesting :)

DodgeR- Agree about contrast! I'm a bit sceptical about using pure black for foreground objects though. I was never fan of that in colored comics. The play of black&white, as light and shadow work amazing in b&w tables, however it somehow lose its appeal when the comic get colored  (that's one of the reasons i like b&w comics more).
Pure personal preferences :)
