Critics' Lounge / Graphic tablet question
Sat 20/09/2003 12:22:27
I just upgraded my comp (after my old one started to act funny) and naturaly i now have to install everything from a start...
Now a question- i have Wacom graphic tablet (Graphire A5) and i can't really remember if i got some CD with drivers along with it (i bought it quite some time ago)... the only cd i can find is the one with Painter Classic i got with tablet. Can somebody who own Wacom Graphire tell me if there should be another cd, and if not, how the hell do i force comp to recognize tablet?

Thanks! :)

I was able to see pics before they went off line- absolutely fantastic backgrounds! If you'll need some web space for pics in future i'll be glad to host them for you.

Agree with Pessi that technic is completely a matter of personal preferences.
Personally, i'm for classic approach- hand drawn and scaned. I feel, i have much greater control over lines and shapes while drawing on paper. As it was aready said, you'll need animation light table to do animation this way, but it's not that expensive (or you can even make it yourself) and with some practice it really pays off

On the other hand, this method is more suitable for "full" animation, while for game characters, in some cases, works better pixel-pushing (again, depends on style). It's your choice :)

Fantastic- great animation and your program looks really nice too.
I must say i like a bit extreme poses. Bravo!

I just ordered special edition of TNBC DVD :)
Btw, anyone saw that short puppet animated movie (in style of TNBC) called The Periwig Maker? I catched it on one of the animation festivals and must say technicaly it's one of the most beautiful puppet movies i ever saw. In short: fantastic!

Remix0r: Thanks! really appreciate it :)

Critics' Lounge / Re:Quick life drawing sketch

Looking very nice! Great :)
As for critics&suggestions: it's not really life-figure study, which i expected from the title. The thing is, it shows you were drawing from your head and so you simplified proportions. For figure studies it's a good idea to get someone to pose for you (life-drawing classes are great as they do it for you ;)). Drawing from magazines is another solution, but it's far from perfect (at least while you are trying to learn)- doing that, will give you a false impression you are better at drawing than you really are.

What separates life-drawing studies from cartoons the most, are shapes. If cartoons are all about lines, are forms the most important thing of life drawings.
Btw, some equal life drawing with "realistic", which is far from true... It doesn't matter if, for example, arms are a bit longer/shorter than they should be- i think the whole 3d feeling of model is far more important here. You can do that either with lines, or with shading (or both).

Also don't hasitate to sketch messily (at the moment is the pic just too clean, what makes it a bit flat).
I did really quick sketchy example- it's far from perfect and there are mistakes, but it shows, how to easily do more dynamic and 3dimensional study, just by leaving all those sketchy assistant lines on pic. Hope this helps a bit.

Btw, Happy Birthday :)

Cool idea Remixor! What i would like to see changed from RON-like games though, is the whole interpretation. All RON games that i was playing are following the same rules and they all look more or less the same.
If there will be continue-one-room game, i think it would be great if every room would be completely different from previous one (if first room would be cartoony, the next could be deadly serious and realistic, maybe the next could be completely B&W, DGM could make Dada-style room, etc...)- the only thing that'd tie the game together would be continuous story&interface, while authors could experiment with styles.

Similar thing was done in one of the Garfield comic books, where a few different comic authors drew their interpretations of Garfield strips. The results were fantastic :)

Great! I'm looking forward to play the game. I'm aslo familiar with Clifton comics- fun stuff :)

I actually like Deltree's idea about someone doing one room and then passing the game to another one, who'd do the next room, etc.
It would be similar to "continue this sentence" game, except in a form of adventure. I think the result could be really interesting- even if the game wouldn't get finished, you'd still get a collection of puzzles (every room would be a finished puzzle on itself, but it should continue the story from previous room).
It wouldn't be that much work with only one room either (if someone wouldn't feel as making his/her interpretation of character (animation could take some time), he/she should be able to use character from some other room).

I'm sure results would be *very* interesting- especially with all those different drawing styles and storytelling ways... Not to say authors would be able to experiment and go wild.

Some very good thoughts Gilbot. I agree that everything can work in advnture *if* done right. For example, Broken Sword had a few scenes where you were able to die, but because it was done right, it added to the tension and made the game more interesting. Sierra, on the other hand, took those sudden deaths to the extreme and made them annoying.

The same goes for "fix-it" puzzles. They'd have to be fun, so the player would have motivation to solve them. If they'd be too hard, boring or frequent, he/she'd be tempted to simply restore a game or exit the game and continue from last saved game (and those are usually the things that annoy the most).

Non-linear plot could be fun too, but again i think it should be done very carefully. Adventures are the most plot-driven and static games (in RPGs you have fights, strategy, etc.) and most of the time, player want to see the whole game in one play (it's like you'd be reading a book and in the end you'd be told to read it again, to enconunter different ending).
But i think FoA did it best. Non-linear, but still more or less the same, no matter which route you took.

Great illustration! Love the colors, composition and the whole "feel" of pic. Perfect!
As Pessi already mentioned, colors do separate character from the whole setting a bit... but then again, contrast might be exactly what you were after.
Once again freakingtastic!

Very interesting idea DGM. I think, if not over used, it could work very nicely. If it would be used too often, though, it could become just as annoying as death-scenes: player will know he did a mistake and that this "fix-it" puzzle won't advance the story... and what's worse, he won't be able to simply restore the game (as with death scenes), but he'll even need to solve a puzzle.

Still, if used correctly, it could work out very well. Similar thing was used in Toonstruck- if you got captured by bad guys, during certain part of the game, you got thrown into jail and you had to solve an extra puzzle to get out of there.

Yep, animation looks much better now with Eric's corrections.
Btw, why not add a little up&down movement to the right walkcycle too? Animation will look more consistent that way.

Anyway, great work Crabe- love the background.
