Looks great! I really like the line work.. keep it up :)

Hm.. i'll be brutaly honest here.. can't say i like it.

First of all.. color combination doesn't really work.. to me, not only it doesn't reflect word "movies", but it also creates very claustrophobic feel.

Second.. it's way too busy. Good design must be clear, readable and as simple as possible.. here you have too many elements&styles mixed together without any order, meaning or purpose. It's confusing and not very pretty to look at.

Third.. the idea. Try to be more original.. why should you use the most cliche concept: a few photos from movies and some text? Why not something more original&fresh? Design is all about ideas.

Hope i wasn't too discouraging.. but i'd really suggest (if there's still time), to leave this one as it is and try to come up with something entirely new. It's all about learning anyway :)

Man, it's quite amazing, to compare first and last drawing in this thread.. a visible leap in right direction! better poses, characterizations, "acting", lines.. everything actually

I like the new one.. thickhin lines are certainly an improvement!

She was supposed to be looking ahead toward a possible confrontation, leaning casually on a destroyed rock wall.
i think it could have worked as part of comic, with next frame explaining what is going on.. but as a single illustration, it gives too little information.
My main complain is, that it looks like character is still moving and viewer has no idea what she will gonna end up doing. For example: if this would be animation, it'd be inbetween, not key-frame.. if that makes any sense ;)
i did 2 quickies how you could pose her, so it would be more obvious what she is doing..

Very nice pic!
I think you already got all the best advices on how to improve it..
I'm interested- how do you plan poses? Do you first draw a quick sketch and later add details.. or do you start drawing details right away? If later, that explains a bit stiff look. Try to plan poses first and when you are happy with them, start adding facial features, clothes, ornaments..
The biggest problem here is, it's not completely clear what she is doing.. Is she resting/relaxed (that suggests her right hand) or is she in "action"?

TerranRich,
you do realize you just found a cure for next time she'll had a "headache"? You lucky dog you!

Just noticed this thread.. thanks for heads up Eggie! :)

Updates will be more frequent now that most of the layout is up&running.
Also, there are 2 new animations (and a few shorter ones) waiting, but since they weren't published yet, i can't put them up in portfolio at the moment.

Hey Dan!
First of all, it looks great! I like its minimalistic, clean look. classy :)

The only minor critic.. i think you'd be better off with 2 separated sub categories. One for photography and one for drawings.. it can be all on one page (as it is now) except separated. Here's an example
(don't mind the font, color, composition.. it's just to illustrate what i had in mind).

Oh, and i love pop ups! if it's not a secret, can you tell me, what to do, so it's just a window without usual explorer junk?

Just one piece of advice: if this will be your portfolio.. use it for music only and nothing else. Do NOT mix in your other activities (ags games, etc.)!

You can make separate hompage just for your hobbies.. but never put those in your portfolio.. not only it will confuse the visitors and potential clients, but it will also give your homepage very free-time, i-make-this-just-for-fun feel.. and you don't want that.

another thing- it's not about quantity but quality. I know.. it's hard to make selection and to sacrifice some work you might like. But as the bottom line, it's better to have 3 killer demo samples.. than 20 average ones. Be VERY selective. Sometimes it's even good to not use some piece of work, you might be proud of, if you know you wouldn't enjoy producing more in such style. The work you put up, must be you.

about name- use your real one.

And do you plan the poses and such on separate papers before drawing with ink?
usualy i draw characters with pencil first (for the same reason as you- to avoid any major mistakes) and then use "animation light table", to draw the inked version on new paper. This pic was the exception- i knew exactly what i wanted to do with the girl, so i didn't draw any previous sketch and went straight to inking.

So do you just ink on a piece of white paper and scan it in?
yes, that's pretty much it

Do you mean the girl was actually drawn with ink straightaway without pencils? If so, did you colorize the outline in PS?
yeah, it was done this way (except the lines were colorized in Flash).. i'm using Staedtler Pigment Liner for "inking".. i like it, because it gives you great control over lines.

QuoteThe reason I'm asking is that I'm used to drawing my character outlines with pencil and tableting them on the computer with pressure-sensitiveness on high to make it look more random.
when i got tablet, i wanted to use that technique too.. but soon found out, that it takes me way too much time. What i inked on paper in a minute, took me well over 10 minutes on a computer (with all editing, etc.). plus, i like feeling of having a direct control on paper :)

QuoteWhy be good, righteous, fair, generous, unselfish or even love someone if it's all for nothing?"
I'm not religious.. but i think if people need a "higher" reason to be all that, then there's something wrong with society.
It's not all for nothing, not even for us atheists ;) it feels good, to make others happy, to love, etc.
in other words: if someone is doing this *just* for religion sake.. for a higher purpose if you want.. then.. isn't it just as "sinful" (damn, how i hate this word) as to be hateful, selfish, etc.? It's worse, if you ask me. I'd call it hypocrisy.

QuoteThere has to be a reason why we must be good, righteous, fair, generous, unselfish and love one another
sure there is.
And there is also a reason we have laws, prisons, accustomed moral conscience... religion..
It's the only way we can survive as a society.

no hard feelings i hope. a bit of "provocation" is always a good thing, i guess :)

Thank you all for comments! glad to hear you like better the first version with less contrast.

Ildu- yeah, they are both hand-drawn, but the girl was inked, while the background was drawn with pencil.. kind of like cell animation actually :)
