Estonian gamers met Kazaa, Limewire, DC++, iMesh, Morpheus, etc, etc a long time ago :(
Even if I bought a game from store, my parents would probably send me to a doctor.
I have bought alot of legal software in past few years (now that I have a decent job) but have to admit that tried alot I
would have regretted buying if I did so.

All online shopping possiblities are quite shut down for Estonia: Rarely any company ships anything here, rarely the price pays off (transportation boosts prices to sky) and even more rarely anything in postal services work. My GF sent me some stuff from US and it took 4 months to deliver! eugh.

But here, on AGSForums, everybody get super hostile when someone claims himself to be a pirate.
Thinking about quality of life elsewhere, it's quite unfair.

I was wondering if all new games are as expensive as it feels in Estonia.
For example, Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion costs 690kr, It's about $56.

It's 10% of average wage (about 6900 kr). Definetly heavy hit on wallet.

Is it so pirate-temptating in other countries too?

Messing with margins helped!
Well, not with iframe ones, but ones for the table page.

I also changed iframe "scrolling" variable from "auto" to "yes"

Now it generates only vertical scrollbar!

It's half-solved, because the vertical scrollbar is now ALWAYS there, even when there's absolutely no need.
But one unneeded scrollbar is still much better than two.

But your iframe margin idea solved another problem much better:
if Iframe src is a photo, IE inserts scrollbars and HEAVY white area around the photo. God I hate Microsoft.
Setting margins of photo frame to 1 and making iframe 2 pixels wider and taller than photo image leaves 1 pixel white and it looks like a nice photo frame. Disquised and half-assed, but it works.

Thanks for guiding my thought to right direction, Binky.

*relieved alot*

I have spent a whole week messing on a goddamn table.
Since the table opens in an iFrame, it automatically generates scrollbars.

The problem is: The table creates horisontal scrollbar. Which is absolutely unneeded.

The table (which is set to 100% of document width) somehow laughs in my face by shifting 4-5 pixels of its content out of iframe so scrolling will be needed. And the iframe obeys and creates horisontal scrollbar.

But the content absolutely fits into iframe! It does not need a scroll!

The table itself is a menu for a cafe.

As you can see on image, the table has LOADS of room for text. But it cheekily stretches first cell all over the frame and even further. (The screenshot was taken after I made iframe much wider to ensure that there's enough room for text. But it's narrower actually and still should fit/work.)

Of course I could disable scrollbars for the frame. But I do need them, the table is very long in height so I need to scroll vertically anyway.

What is this menace?

* I tried to manually set size for first cell; resulted in a mess
* I tried to limit whole table to 80%, 95% etc width of a document - resulted scrollbar and empty space to scroll

There's nothing else on the table page.
Also, when viewed in Mozilla Firefox, everything is... okay!

It's only that damned IE6 that generates extra scrollbar.
But employer who hired me to make the web... well, she's on IE6...

*desperate*

General Discussion / Re: RAM vs CPU

I don't see much point in minor upgrades, atleast when you're dedicated 3D gamer.
Mostly because a single shortage in one thing could nullify power of others (i.e lot's of CPU power won't help if you have weak video, etc). And computer technology makes jumps in every month.

It's simpler to buy a totally new system and sell old one.

I'd say CPU.

I have 2x2,18 GHz dualcore CPU and 1 GB of RAM.
And never had problems or lag because of ram, though it's a bit too little for such system.
Simply no or very little disk trashing... CPU usage is 3% at most, unless I'm playing some 3D game,
and pagefile size is constantly below 300MB.

It's either more room to hold unprocessed data or ability to process data faster to get ram cleaned up faster.
And cpu wins here.

But If you have a *fast* hard disk, it shouldn't be a problem.

Mozilla seems to be major memory eater... 134MB of ram under Mozilla is like everyday situation.

QuoteEven though I'm chuffed to the gills with the FoY nomination, I do agree that the list of nominated games seems very unbalanced. Full blown 100 people-team commercial titles next to one person homegrown games? Bit odd, really...

Sounds more like offensive move against amateur games.

Something like:
Let's assume that Ace Quest is commercial and costs as much as Half-Life 2.
Now someone gives you a possibilty to get one of them free. Of your free choice.
Really hard to guess what would you pick!

Same thing with putting Prey and other commercial titles into same pot with amateur games.

QuoteZuma? How is that innovative? Fun, yes, but quite identical to several other Popcappies.

I hate Zuma. My co-workers start every day by occupiyng my computer and playing Zuma.
It just expressed how dissappointed I was with Darwinia, after all those good reviews.
Hardcore waste of Source engine...
#1709
Exactly WHAT are these games?
I recognized only Prey, Darwinia (which absolutely sucks despite the hype) and Psychonauts. Well, and Zuma (which totally conquers Darwinia).

Others?
Among amateur games, there's lots of better stuff to choose from.
I almost feels like they randomly picked a number of games just to make a list.

Anyway, my vote goes to FOY.
I really loved the demo, though
QuoteExactly. And I also wonder how it got nominated for 'Explosive Demo' or whatever, with that crapped-up, glitchy demo.

...that's true too :)
But it's FOY! That excuses alot.

In time, you will burn out. You WILL.

But during the race, you'll become much stronger, you'll see that you can actually handle it and it boosts both morale and endurance.
Of course, pay attention to your social behaviour - being tired all the time makes communicating with people super dangerous - and may break relationships.

I *do* suggest trying this, but only as long as you can handle it. You could find out alot about yourself you never knew. Your nerve system and mental wellfare takes a hit, and it may generate many wonderful and not-so-wonderful things. Like Haddas said, creativity is one sure thing that will change in ways. Because in such mental state, you will sense and see things differently, and your thoughts take unexpectable routes.
I see this more like an experiment I would conduct if I had no serious business to attend to. Like on vacation or calmer time of my life. If you have serious matters, it's not that good idea - you may mess things up.

If I don't sleep for a long time, I suddenly get into weird humorous mood. Everything feels very funny and myself is a natural born humorist. Something like those women who have few glasses of wine and start to laugh uncontrollably.

But remember one thing: If your body starts telling you to stop, do it immediately and give up on some of your load. Call in sick, sleep few days, etc.
Overworking experiments may cause hardcore signs, few times I went overboard... well, I became BLIND. Yes, few months with no more than 4 hours of sleep per night and 14 hour long workdays affected me enough to just on one nice day, someone turned off my "camera". I sat half an hour just shit scared!
It's quite easy to imagine how hardly I freaked out... though, I instantly went to... no, not doctor - bed and had a nice sleep. Next morning, everything was okay again. This has happened few times later too.

Best suggestion I can come up with: reserve yourself a resting time. One day or night in a week where you could sleep all you want to. Like 7+ hours. Then It'll be a cake walk.

Be careful.

* On your handdrawn (atleast I presume so) bg's, there's WAY too much white color. Usually, only white you can see in an adventure game background - is either clouds, signs or some white castle or something.
It's quite odd and surprising to see so much white on your bg's. Anyway, lose it. It tires eyes and ruins atmosphere.

* If you're using photos, try to keep them at same quality level. Superblurred (32x32?) image scaled to 320x240 is absolutely awful. Either nice photos or draw something yourself. After all, googleing deeper can't be that hard.

* Try to learn your graphics program (which is not MSPaint I hope) enough to adjust contrast, brightness and saturation on images. Then, go through all your photos at make them match. Little photoparts too, for instance, the contrasty, dark fireplace sticks awfully out from blurry, bland, bright kitchen background. But if you played with contrast and brightness a bit, no-one could even tell that they're separate images.

* Ripping images isn't that bad. But ripping well-known characters from other adventure games is worse than using AGS-default-Roger as player character.

* All this black pixel crap around characters and objects has to go.

* If I'd were you, I'd skip all this graphics-combining waste of time, took a digital camera and a tour to some castle ruins or random European capital. And then photograph some real castles for my game, just how I needed the pictures. The quality remains then same and you have lots of material to choose from.
But I'm afraid there's no castles in Canada :(

I guess I'm lucky then with my hometown...

P.S. Then again, it just gave me an idea. Why don't you google for pictures of European capitals? Most of them have gorgeous "old town". I'd try Munich, Prague, Warsaw...
Lot's of nice architecture and castles, just as your type of game needs. A bit of photoshop and you can remove Japanese tourists from your castle too :D

What to do... what to do. It's quite easy!

Sit down with her. And seriously ask what does she want? Where does she want to go? End up?

Let her explain her vision and acts. Maybe she hasn't even thinked about it seriously.
How does she imagine future of hers, yours and you two (er- three... er-five) together?

I'm quite sure that after giving it some thought, she realizes that there couldn't be any.
Kids need their dad, after all.

QuoteInCreator, unless I'm mistaken, not everyone would die instantly and painlessly.
Unless I'm mistaken, I was simply kidding... :D Nobody wants to die in 3000C...

QuoteI'm pretty sure a lot of people would be in agony for a while.
But yes, shit happens.

Fearing a nuclear war is ABSOLUTELY pointless, IMO.

Dude. It's Nuclear Bomb.
It's not a thug who could attack you on street and make you disabled with well placed knife hit.
Either a disease. Or an ordinary war, where people run and bullets fly. Where you are scared, abandoned and in constant danger for a long time.

It's the nuke.
One boom, and no worries no more.
You even don't have a second to be afraid or unhappy about it.
And if you're lucky, you're able to see the greatest, most advanced and powerful view, the Man has ever created on this planet. The moment where Man totally 0wnZ the nature.
I don't mind seeing this before I die. But please, wait until I'm old...

But what's the point in worry?
#1715
Thanks, I'll see if it works.
Still, quite weird that iframes can't be used as objects, i mean

iframename.src

kind of variable is set in iframe create only and unchangeable?
I CAN change the content via links. Like, set link's target as iframename. Why can't i do it just via code, without anything clickable?

Also, I can't figure out how to erase iframes once they've set.

It's 2006 and there's lots of web languages. How could such easy thing like multilink be impossible without hardcore javascripting?

This whole thing is really difficult, I'd say - much harder than usual computer programming in any language. There's just a big mess I see...

Anyways, I'll get to work now.

General Discussion / Web help needed: The link
Fri 06/10/2006 05:23:12
I've been learning web design alot lately and come to a weird discovery:
Hyperlink has only one location.

I mean, you have one link, you click, and you one web page opens.
But I need two.

The page i'm working on, has 2 iframes, and I need to give both iframes content when only one link is clicked.

explanation:
One iframe is for "contents" list (a submenu), and another one displays actual content.
So, from the main menu,
* clicking on (for example) "games" should display html file (with clickable game list) in Frame 1
* and games page welcome in Frame 2.

HTML supports only 1 location to each link.
How to work around?

#1717
Be creative.

for example,

use brick on car

"I shouldn't do that. This car belongs to mr. Rogers, who is very depressed man. If I'd ruin his car, he'll be really angry next day. This leads to conflict with his boss, and he'll be fired. His wife dumps him after hearing what happened and mr. Rogers tries to kill himself by speeding in the midtown. Unfortunately, president of <insert country name here>'s motorcade will pass the city at same time, and even worse is that mr. Rogers will hit his limo. Causing such accident within our country borders will totally spoil our relationships with <same country> and its allies, which will result in nuclear war, and eventually in WW3.
So, in conclusion, not using brick on this car will make me the saviour of planet Earth and humankind. Try something else!"

;D
(Just joking)

Looks quite good. Few things to pay attention to:

* change the sky. There's too much clouds and they look very flat. If possible, map sky onto a sphere (with normals flipped)
* I don't know if your software supoorts this, but better light(s) could improve this scene alot.
* More geometry! Window frames, door frame, handle, etc
* White glow on trees looks quite awful. Why is it there?
* 2D images stick out. I suggest to either make it all 3D or try to work around somehow.
#1719
Thanks.
To be honest, I haven't drawn a pixel for Henri since the summer started.

Then again, I have a great set of music done.
Well, I'm sure i'll bring this lifetime project to finish during those dark, cold winter nights.
Just not sure when. School and work at the same time leaves me with very little of spare time.

Not bad!
Though, it felt more like a caricature/whatever the joke pictures are called  in english.
Only 1 strip isn't enough to judge indeed.
