General Discussion / Re: London Riots

Having watched a load of documentaries of prisons all over the world, I guess imprisonment as rehabilitative method has failed pretty much and works only for innocent/dumb people who kill someone while driving drunk, shot spouse's lover or made some other humanly mistake like this. Shit happens.
But for true hardboiled criminals, it's just a way of life and they spend most of it in prison, going back again and again. And we make it work.

Which - to me - sounds really cowardly. So lawful citizens pay taxes every month just to "keep those monsters away from me" and therefore provide lifetime support for criminals, often till one side dies. So what the fuck?

I jump onto arena/execution/Hammurabi's Code boat. I, as a member of society that created laws and vowed to follow them, do not want to pay ransom (in form of holding up prison system) to people who just want to be a dick and undermine that agreement of our civilization. Also, justice should stop existing as a business. All lawyers should be on strict, ocassionally controlled government payroll so justice would be universal to everyone and not better for ones who can employ more/better lawyers.

Also, I'm quite sure that public whipping or some other form of instant justice would work far better than 2-6 or whatever months of prison when someone steals something or so. It would also greatly reduce amount of bureaucracy and workload of justice system which in turn will raise quality and fairness of justice on other crimes.

E: Am I preaching Sharia law somewhat? Well, maybe muslims got that one right.

Dunno. If world ends at 2012 and we're all savage, dystopian remnants of human society, WHAM would make a perfect leader.  ;D
That, or many leaders before 17th century... when - if I remember correctly, brits rioted also and turned world around... and when British (and French) industrial revolution and urbanization actually started this restless lower class of poor industry workers, which produced skinheads, punk music, chavs and whatnot... all kinds of extremist left-wing movements... Till today when those people are still burning cars. So do French evey now and then. Maybe it's 300-year legacy and we're still seeing a bit of something that started with beheading Charles I Stuart?

Though a bit extreme, this woman does possess clear logic:

http://melaniephillips.com/how-the-liberals-ruined-britain

Collapse of morals and traditional culture (of which, religion CAN BE a part) behind it is pretty much what could lead to such corrupted thinking and emotions that makes people burn down their home street. I'm not preacher of traditional family values nor religious in any way, but maybe chilling the fuck down and trying to fill crazy heads and minds with something that has proven itsself over centuries would help.

In other words, maybe UK should tone down on piranha capitalism and re-domesticate lower class using traditional methods, like nationalism, religion or football. Get everyone involved into something. They sure do want to cooperate and feel united... just that rioting on street isn't the best form of it I think.

Yankees know how to do it perfectly. Like creating image of common enemy in every 5-10 years...

Otherwise, pretty well done!

Thx a lot Ilych for the edit,

I'm afraid you're right. It probably needs a color layer on top, at least for the highlights. Well, I had some fun with cleaning up and detailing the bg tonite. Also did this color test,
here's the wip:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

This is most visually pleasant edit. I like the contrast very much and dislike lack of it on other edits. Right side of screen should be contrastier and lighter too.

Paper texture/monochromatic noise on one of the other edits isn't really bad idea, it helps to detail stones better, but there should be very carefully applied little amount of this, and none on totally black areas.

I liked first "hello world" example better, with C++

static void... um, what? How come every program has to start with a shitty name for RPG dungeon?

I'm not sure about offering cookies and milk to rebels. Throughout history, violent and severe suppression has been first choice method when dealing with rebellion of any kind. England should have rich and colorful history/experience on that matter... In Russia, OMON (special purpose police unit) usually blockades rioting mass, breaks into smaller groups, which are forced into separate streets and beaten until everybody wants to go home. Cruel and undemocratic yes, but...

Thing is, it works. Without bullets and heavy number of casualties.
Also, this guarantees orderly innocents normal life. You don't care about police scolding some hoodlums when alternatively, you could get robbed and beaten by that same angry mob instead.

However high our pacifist/anarchist dreams might be, a city/community of the size and ethnic mixture like London has, the law and order must be concrete to make it all work. But of course, it's a free world and choosing to cower in your home while angry mob is burning your car to give ruling power a middle finger and news networks something to chew, while thinking if that shop you work at is still there next morning -- is a choice like any other and not to be criticized...  :P

General Discussion / Re: How to name a game

Use random name generator to get a list of 100 names or so. Then pick few words that sound cool and match together.
And from them, find totally perfect name.

Spoiler
And then google it and find out that there's 100 books, movies and games by that name already

His name is Eduard.

* Make upper arms shorter by 2-3 pixels
* Reduce shoulder width, hands don't seem to quite fit to the body atm, like he's carrying watermelons (gorilla look)
I see that you tried to follow the photo but took illusion as real characteristic. Illusion comes from the cut of his jacket, the doesn't have empty space under arms actually.
* Make foot slimmer and taller. It looks very cartoony right now- Human feet are a bit longer than torso usually

It there a reason it looks vertically stretched? I cannot imagine cars or people that high, unless it's something very cartoonish, like Monkey Island 4/DOTT

As for crits, shading under roof looks wrong -- the corner area where wall meets roof should not get light. You did it right in the bottom part where wall meets ground, giving a shadow there.

Lock it!

Icey/studio3/whatever, next time name your thread simply "flame me"

Finally put down simple life rules about moving on feet (27 years of experience, don't own a car or bicycle, lot's of hiking in really harsh conditions), some other notes too

* If distance between you and objective is about 1-2km or less, jog. You'll use about 150-200% of energy compared to walking there, but move 300% faster and get there three times quicker. Which improves mood also.
* If distance is longer, walk fast. Energy consumption is a bit higher, but you'll get actually tired quicker and more frustrated the more you take time to get anywhere
* If distance is around 500m and you don't have to move much more after that, sprint. travelling  close to 30km/h is awesome and you'll reach objective about 4-6 times faster than walking. Basically a difference between 5 minutes vs 1 minute, which sure does count when catching a bus or something. At that distance, you shouldn't get too tired and sweaty too, unless you're fat and totally out of shape. In which case, you should do it anyway. Just not before going into closed area with lots of people in it

In winter, if it's really cold, this is different:

* If there's heavy wind or biting cold, jog. Bad weather (and escpecially, wind) worns you down over time, not distance, so the faster you get into building, the better. Speed must be low enough so you'd won't go outta breath and get cold due heavy breathing.
* If temperature is around or less than -18°C, use your scarf to cover mouth, but not nose and breathe through nose. Breathing through mouth creates moisture into scarf, which will freeze and ruin your face (it goes red for 2-3 days and itch or "bite")
** If you have to rest/sleep in this weather in nature or something, make sure you cover your neck and ears, because otherwise you won't wake up. Also, drink a lot. If you have no scarf, boxers can double as makeshift scarf. If you wake up and have no will to move, punch yourself (it helps, adrenaline resets survival instincts). Heavy hypothermia does this (you just don't care anymore) and I'm thankful for my friend who snapped me out of this once and made fire
* If it's simply cold, but doesn't look like it will deteriorate your energy, walk. You don't need to perspirate in cold.
* In high snow, take all the time you need. Jogging or fast walking while snow is up to your knee is stupid and you won't get anywhere
* On ice, shoe-skating is both fun and more efficient than trying to walk on it
* Wet clothes in winter kill. You'll be FAR better without wearing clothes at all than wearing wet clothes. Fell into icy lake? Strip immediately.

And other notes

* In heavy rain, sprint. Despite what Mythbusters say, the faster you get out of rain, the better. Amount of water in your clothes usually matter less than time being under cold shower
* In light rain, walk fast. It can get worse any moment so better haul ass.
* In really light fog-like rain (we call it mushroom rain) during warm summer morning, take off your shirt and shoes and fuckin enjoy. It's greatest weather ever
* Being shirtless or adjusting pants zipper if you forgot it open (in public) is okay. People who look down to you or start screaming are idiots and never been to a beach
* When on stairs, take 2 steps at once. Taking only one will frustrate people who are NOT descendants of snails and makes you look old and slow
* 2m high 9 to 11-stair stairway can be easily scaled in 2 huge leaps (upwards) if you speed up last few steps before ascending and are under 30 years old. Never try it while descending unless you enjoy head trauma and broken bones

I wouldn't let neither of them near nuclear suitcase (if such thing exists outside Tom Clancy's imagination/24 series)

But honestly, first time seeing those names and hearing about USA 2012.
E: Checked all local news outlets - not a word so far. Guess we don't care  :P 2012 is far away too

If that... thing becomes president of US

the world is as well as ended.

Look at her. Look at her eyes--!
"I WILL EAT YOUR SOUL"
This is how robot spies will look like if machines decide to rise and make human-like machines to infiltrate our species.

Now this dude looks much more like potential president:

Rich white guy with "perfect" smile. Looks exactly like I imagine a successful tycoon.
"Don't forget to buy a Mittâ,,¢ flashlight/trainers/condoms/whatever!"

I think he'll do.

Politics? I don't think majority of US voters vote for politics. Remember Bush?

On engine level, yes.
But for actual image editing, sprite sheets give a good overview, organization and ability to adjust (such as copypaste a detail, make slight change in sprite so all animations get it instantly (say, you want to color red shirt green. Have fun with going over every file!), etc etc) on the fly, and that's very much overlooked. If you find no use to sheets, try first and thank me later.
Also, I fail to see how importing file by file or GIFs is any way better than importing areas of same sheet? With as shitty tiled import is right now, true. But with any other software that does this right, it's way another ballgame.

Also there's quite a difference between 10 characters and few opening doors for MAGS game and full featured project with enormous amount of animations and sprites to manage. This is where TSI is required.
