Critics' Lounge / More music!
Mon 12/09/2005 05:22:17
Well, there's another track I would like to have C&C for.
It's supposed to be an intro music, as ambient, quiet and non-disturbing as possible.

So tell me did I succeed or does it annoy ears?
Is it way too simple or vice versa, not so ambient after all?
Maybe it could be improved somehow?

Inspiration? Easy.

Go to the countryside, or a trip or somewhere else, where you are away from computers, internet and tv. Books maybe too. Where you are bored, but surrounded by something new. Nature works best for me.

After a day or two, you start to imagine what cool things you would do if you only had a computer available. Then write it down, since you have loads of time to think about your idea and develop it (I usually skip this while at home and play some counter-strike instead, so that's why isolation is important), so when you decide to return to possibilities, you have a bunch of inspiration and ideas.

As I said, easy.

Helm smells the local fauna.

It's like a scene out of an adventure game.

Ooh! ooh!
** gets breath back

I thought I can draw backgrounds, but nothing compares to Great Master Darth Mandarb. The color usage and detail is simply fantastic! Especially color....

Into waiting list!

They DO.
And I started making own display() even before strazer answered to this thread, thing is - his code helps to fix new GUIs size, according to text.

Thanks for help.

But there's another problem: While new GUI can be clickable, the text label can not. So I can't remove text by clicking onto it and must catch either the sides of the GUI or make a little "close" button for GUI. Any ideas to work around this?

This is how far I am right now:

Making separate GUI instead of "text window" is good, because you can't choose font on default text window! CJ should really make a nice optimizable text window... with all variables needed. But until then, separate GUI will be the best option to work around.

I've been messing with this problem with ages...

Objective: Transclusent text window GUI

Method: since text windows *still* don't support gGui.Transparency, I made text window gui totally transparent (background image - none, bg color 0) and I'm trying to use another (transparent) gui over (under) it, so it had a semi-transparent background.
Since this other gui must be at the same size and position as the text window, I have to resize and reposition it every time text is Displayed. But hey, there's gGui.X, gGui.Y, gGui.Width and gGui.Height properties, just what I need. But there's also a...

Problem: Where and how do I use these commands to make other gui appear in right time, size and place? Does it work at all, I mean

-Let's say that other gui is named "other" and text window one as "text"-

gOther.X = gText.X;
gOther.Width = gText.Width;

and so forth.

Question
Does it work? I mean, do text windows have those properties/variables? (AGS 2.7)
Where do I have to put those lines to keep size updated at time? (text windows stretch and reposition according to text length!)

BTW, this is what I want to achieve:

Also, don't post JPGs. Use PNG format instead.
If you're posting a bg with lots of black area, remove it from the pic, to save image size on pointless areas.

I recommend test-firing everything with simply having some bigger project. With sponsors.

At least where I live, it's quite possible to start a - let's say - some kind of game for children (ages 3-6 or so) and get easily some toy/clothing/etc companies to support whole project. Hell, if it's edcuational and acceptable game, it would even be supported by government, more specifically - Education Department. Some guys here teamed up and made a Flash(!) game which introduced kids how to act in traffic and some traffic laws. They had lots of supporting groups/sponsors, even some at more official level, such as local fire/rescue brigades and police.

So it was semi-commercial, but useful and welcome in society.

Such project could boost finances and company name really quickly, and kid  games sell well, though they have less audience than other games.

I wouldn't recommend placing all bets on one card, though. Where's FOY?

I'm not afraid of spiders, since they're quite tiny where I live, and also considered as lucky things to have living near home (sort of "bringing home and family luck" or similar), and only spider that really scared the shit out of me was in King's Quest III. The scariest AGI dying animation I've ever seen!

But I do have overall disgust and fear if it comes to all kind of bugs, especially wasps and other ones with potential to harm people.

I also have similar experience where terror crossed all limits: At my grandma's house, when it's autumn and rainy season, specific bugs totally conquer whole house. I don't know their name in english, but in latin, they're called Forficula auriculata, and Estonian name translates to something like "earfork". Sucker looks like this:

These bugs have been feared by people through ages, and people say that they drill into human's ear while it's sleeping, damaging inner ear and even brain. How much is it true, I'm not sure. But they do make little scratchy sound with their forks at their bottom. About 16mm long too, much like average european cockroach.

Anyway, they attack house when everything's getting wet, and gave me most horrid bug experience ever. Right, I was lying in bed, in dark room and watching TV.

TV was only light in room. Then I heard their sound, coming from upwards, looked at the ceiling and... ceiling was full of them, and they started falling into bed, right onto my pillow and blanket.

One fell into my face and I totally panicked. Next moment I was beating them off the bed with towel, and they grasped on towel, one running on it towards my arm. Then I ran into bathroom, threw the towel into bathtub, improvised a flamethrower, using lighter and air conditioner and burnt the towel... Then collapsed and had some trouble to get my breathing back... Needless to say, this night I didn't sleep at all, and walked all night around the town.

I... hate bugs.

I second others --
The main problem is - and will be - wrong perspective.
Ignoring the problem won't make it go away.

If we'd say that you drew your floor absolutely right, the carpet, fireplace and painting are totally wrong and should be more like this:

But I wouldn't recommend so deep perspective anyway, It helps to plan your rooms before hardcore texturing and detailing. This way, you'll find out problems before it's too late/wasteful to correct them.

On such small room, the ceiling should be visible! And perspetive in that case, drawn correctly, of course.

BTW, I love your usage of colors. They're calm and appealing.
Amount of detail even in such empty scene is an amazing thing aswell.

Holy--!

I kind of disliked what I saw on screenies and all these bits of game that have been around the boards during development... I mean, the style.
But having finally played through this (and finished the game), the heavily desaturated art and nightmarey atmosphere/characters really fit in there and add alot to the story, so my opinon totally changed. Plus, it's an awesome game, with some neat puzzles and about right amount of difficulty.

Weird and not-appealing-to-everyone humor is the thing I liked the most. AGS relations too (arcade machine, look at blue cup, hehe-).

Good job, Anarcho. Despite some nasty bugs and somewhat rushed ending, It's a great game and definetly worth to try.

"God doesn't exist and I don't care what you say."
Well, typical response to this would be
"You're ignorant and immature/intolerant"

And this thread wouldn't be 3 pages long.

You're making online debating too easy, lgm. Where's the fun?

There's a strong difference in harrassing laws which are made to:

- Lesser the chance for innocent people to be blown up
and/or
- Lesser the chance for something to happen that will make numerous forces, such as police, international organizations (such as UN), military,  and of course, government - look weak and helpless if it comes to protecting the country...

So who cares about your opinions anyway?
The mentioned forces have become paranoid - so why spare you? Thinking about someone observing when you e-mail/SMS/etc your fantasies to your boy/girlfriend will turn you paranoid any way.

I don't think that's too complicated, but definetly doesn't sound too convincing. So..

If you are able to create interesting, loveable and most important - cartoony enough - main character, this could work.

Trying to have some sci-fi reality here won't help, in my opinion. But I imagine this well as a helluva good comedy. So cartoony and funny is the way to go.

Just remember that:
* The strength of sci-fi is that you may fantasize wildy, without any restrictions
...so you can create really interesting and original plots.
* The weakness of sci-fi is that you may fantasize wildy, without any restrictions
...so it may end up being confusing and even stupid. Same for puzzles, they may end up illogical

The story sounds interesting, and if you are able to keep it simple and well-explained-to-player throughout the game, it should work well.

Also there is a world map of AGS. You can see how many people there are in some parts of the world.

Really? I don't see any usernames or flags on this map...   :-

Game > Test Game

AGS folder > Game project folder > Folder named "Compiled"

Everything in "Compiled" is your game. To publish, you need everything from this folder.

Not bad, I must say.

Still, I hate what you did to movement - the usual CSS/HL2 type of smooth running is replaced with piratey wooden peg leg blah blah limping.

And HL2 engine features excellent physics... why is it totally cut out in this mod? No physically manipulated objects at all! Even windows aren't breakable...

What a waste.

And... if it comes to level design, painted-on-door-handles suck balls.

Apart from that, it looks quite interesting. Pity that I couldn't find a server to get to feel it for real.

17 degrees Celsius and third week of rainy weather isn't what I'd call a nice summer... Effin' Baltics.
