General Discussion / Re: Blasphemy

Blasphemy?
3D characters is a thing about graphical side of AGS games, so I rely on that.

Blasphemy?
Well, asking for such thing, yeah.
Not only because it has been discussed about 1000 times or so...

Look --
we have totally free, powerful and flexible engine, right?
Why --
keep asking for something that majority can't, doesn't want or simply are not able to (professionally) use?
If --
you want such improvement, which will most likely make a huge change in AGS overall...
Do --
Push the engine into limits! Drain it dry!
Make --
So good, so pretty, so damned good 2D game, using everything that engine is capable to do, so you
Will --
show people that such improvement could do wonders, that there's absolutely nowhere to go on with your game, and you - and we all definetly
Need --
to get something entirely new to make better games.

...

what the hell am I doing? This looks like a weird commercial  :P

Anyway, It's nice to dream sometimes, and I confess making such sin myself, but I'd prefer a simple great 2D game instead of all these horrid polygon messups all the newbs will start to release since the moment 3D characters will be integrated.

* did you save your sounds in proper filename format?

sound1.wav
sound2.mp3

etc

* the game directory is where all project files are, like

ac2game.ags
acsprset.spr
editor.dat
roomx.crm

...and other files. That's the right one, it's most likely inside the folder where AGS program itself is (a subfolder in AGS main folder). The compiled (final, excecutable game with .exe file will be in separate folder, called "compiled" by default, that's not the one where to put sound files). The right folder is also usually named the same that your game is.

So, check if you put them to right folder.

* AGS should have asked for rebuilding VOX files before test-compiling (after you added sounds), but if it somehow didn't, select "Rebuild VOX files" from "Game" menu in AGS main screen (shortcut key - Ctrl+B (ags 2.7))

* It's unlikely, but maybe you forgot to recompile the game after adding sounds! For any case, do it again (File menu, "Test game")

* Also unlikely, but possible: If you ripped the sounds straight from internet and even worse - all from same website, they may have some weird digital signature that keeps them from playing. I've witnessed such things before, some websites just protect their WAVs in some weird way. Your random media player (Winamp, Windows Media Player, Quicktime, etc) may play it fine, but AGS not. I suggest testing the files (and whole problem) with something else, like try using a mp3 song as a sound or something that surely has to play fine. Then you'll know that problem isn't in wav files. Best way to make sure is make your own sound file, take windows recorder or any other recording program, and a microphone... this HAS to work.

Hope it helps.

Arg! I really couldn't imagine winning so much contests in a row and missed 3 days!!!   :P Well, it was a Miami trip, after all.

Anyway, speech these pictures up a little...

Well, here.
A nice amount of detail pleases my eye.
That's good.
But some things not so well, they are:

* whole room yellow? boooo-ring. make at least ceiling and floor different.
* dresser/drawers thingy in the middle looks like it's floating above floor... make the shadow under it extra strong and clear to eliminate this illusion
* the bed looks.... extremely tiny! The human who fits to sleep in this bed is probably very unlikely able to reach the upper drawer on dresser... So, what I mean is that the bed is total bummer and you should redraw it to atleast 1,5 times larger one.
* the lamp in ceiling is... very boring and small. I can't believe that this little bulb can really cast any light to such large room. Also, since room itself looks nice, it's unlikely that people who designed the room, left just an ugly bulb in ceiling istead of buying a nice looking lamp.
* The calendar has a word caleRdar written onto it.

Well, that's it. I like the detailed style and very accurate pixeling here and there. Making good shading, even more details and accurate shadows would make a masterpiece out of this room, so keep on improving and you'll reach perfecy for sure.

eh?
Integer? 32767 (if I remember correctly) is maximum that integer can be. That's your limit and more than enough.

Btw, is there a dedicated thread/site where we can get some info about that game you're making?

No?
I will not put a thread into games in production forum.

I did it with "Trippin'!"
Trippin' is on hold for unknown time.
People send me PM's asking when they can play the game.
I feel guilty.

No.

But since I'm unable to keep my happiness of having another bg done... in secret, most of Henri 6 bg's are somewhere around in Critics Lounge.

Well, this is where I sin. I bump and double-post.  :o

Actually, I just wanted to show what happened after 8 versions and 4 days of headach-ey thinking and aligning...

I decided to keep it simple and dark.
And DanClarke's idea was superb!!!

- Despite chicky's and Thebrat's idea of crap everywhere, I tried it in 2 versions and wasn't quite happy with it. :( Stains and stuff would be pointless to do either, since final version is so dark. Some bottles and things will be of course added, but later and as objects (some puzzle ideas here ;) ).

- big brother suggested a touch-panel register, but since I'm not a frequent club goer, I have no idea how should one look like... nor will many players later. I also have no idea of what word "coaster" means and google image search resulted only rollercoasters .D

- About more neon signs - I think I have enough neon! There's some other rooms with neon too, so I don't want to overdo it.

- The counter height is made according to sprite sizes. It fits almost perfectly.

- It's a dancefloor mostly here, so tables are at the other side of the room, which isn't seen on this bg

- I have absolutely no idea what Evil said!!! :(

- Posters were nice idea and I used them.

- Volumetric light from counter lights was actually last-second-before-save-idea-flash. But they cover problems nicely and also fake more detail
** Yay! writes it up into his bg detail fake list

Well, that's it. If I get this room filled with people dancing, loudspeakers bumping and DJ rocking all in sync with background music, I'd say that this will be a helluva good job for a...
a...
...cutscene.

Yes. I draw game-critical bg's in 3 hours or so, but end up messing a whole week with a room that'll be displayed only few seconds...
what a moron. Well, nothing's solidly fixed here, not even story, so we'll see.

So, yes...

The point was:

  • Participants will draw a comicstrip following the given theme and rules.
  • You are allowed to use any technique in your drawing. But if you use computer you are not allowed to copy and paste ready pictures.
  • Each competition will last 15 days.
  • The starter of each competition will decide the winner.
  • The winner will decide the theme for the next competition.
This half-month's theme is:

Pets!

Yes, pets and other cute small animals make superb material for cartoons and comics.

Think Garfield. Think Tom and Jerry. Think... even Mickey Mouse... You get the point.

It doesn't really have to be a pet, use an animal you wish and which suits better with your idea and story.

I make no other ways to limit the theme, except it could be funny. I can't really imagine a serious cartoon about animals... Just let your creation flow and put some funny animals into some funny situation.

Thank you for your time. Now get working! You have time until 16th July!

Looks great.
I'm not sure what it's got to do with "Video Game Americana" though.  - Is that a Streetfighter?

WHAT? There's people who haven't heard about Fatal Fury? Garou: Mark of the wolves? King of fighters 1994-2003? And of course, all ported versions of Fatal Fury to almost all consoles I could name?
Whoo.

The picture, of course, is awesome.
I'd only point out these weird teal spots on car (won't quite match with other colors) and Terry's nose, which also looks a bit weird... Or a pixel too high. The front windshield could be a bit brighter, so it wouldn't look so flat.

Acutally, I made simpler geometry quickly in 3ds max to have some kind of reference with correct perspective, since sketching a nightclub is indeed mission impossible.

So yes, you may use it.

And thanks for suggestions, people. I got lot's of ideas and I have it almost ready now.

General Discussion / Re: My Style

And.... what IS your own style?
Draw 10 backgrounds and 10 sprites.

From scratch, don't use any reference or tutorials.
Then, sum them all together - what ways were easiest to make for you? Will you use these tricks and techniques in future? yes?

Well, that's your style then.

There's nothing new under the sun. EVERY style is similar to someone else's. Just when you make a complicated picture, the mix of other's styles you usually use to make different things make up your own cocktail. Or a style, name it as you like.

Soo... here's a nightclub. A simple one.
What I would need, is some designing ideas, like stuff to add everywhere to make place nicer and cozier (sp?).

The stuff on the left is a DJ-station and 2 speakers - unfinished since some parts will be added as animated objects, such as speaker parts and a DJ himself :D
Also, wires and cables are missing yet...

The bar counter has lack of detail aswell, but besides bar stools, I have no more ideas what to use to make it more "populated'.

Also, the place will be swarming with dancing NPC's
I planned to try to make these lights (above bar counter) flash with different colors and sending light rays towards dance zone, but I'm sure it'll be helluva scriptage again until I get it to work. Large objects and hardcore transparency use, etc... :(

So, help me think!

Critics' Lounge / Re: New IJHAA bg

* The door has wrong perspective. At this height, it's top line should be almost or fully horizontal(sp?)

* The bunker itself looks a bit too high. Were bunkers so high buildings? From movies, soliders could rarely stand fully up, since the low ceiling ???

* Also, there's huge amount of floor area. You could evacuate whole town into so large bunker :D

So I suggest to keep it a bit smaller.

And, the line where two walls meet -- flip it, so you could achieve rounded walls effect correctly.

Oh my god... these articles make me so scared, I'll never be able to make "perfect" or "good" puzzles...  :(

Well, sounds simple, but I can't figure it out...  :(

How to simply make a moment, where screen fades out, a text message appears, like "10 minutes later..." and screen fades in again? Fading room out also fades whole palette so displaying speech won't work here.

Should I make a new room for this and change simply the room?
This wouldn't be too simple, because when returning, many room variables will be reset...?
Em - then again... I could just check what room game was before in "before fadein" event and reset variables only if --

Well, just tell me if there's any simpler way!  :)
