First one is the prettiest, third one most realistic and second one... er- pointless?

It's quite cartoony bg, so I'd go for first one. Too bright? The better it fits then.

But man, don't you dare to leave these blurred unclean lines there, I mean house, sign, etc. The grass looks superb, don't ruin it with blurry environment.

Or is it just shitty JPG compression? Use PNG.

Almost whole edit is made in ArtGem, the mysterious (and cancelled) program I always recommend to starters...
Mysterious part relies in that they'll always fall in love with it. :)

Since It's rarely downloadable at the present day, I kept a copy:
http://www.increator.pri.ee/muz/rlv_ag12.zip

The tree itself was made in MSPaint, but leaves in ArtGem.

-And-

The edit? It's not amazing.
It's mega n00b, since everything is out of proportions(sp?), the perspective is waay off and whole sizes make no sense. Why does bookstore have so large sign? Or so large house? The sky color is weird, the sun aswell. etc...

..er... I even won't say anything, since It's my lousiest edit ever.
Let's just say that I can't edit this picture into my style, since you're very far from it yet, and this would not help you.

I still tried texturizing it though, and you'll see clearly how much even a simple noise on the house changes overall look.

BG's that large just won't look very good in simple coloring, unless done by professionals. Learn using texture and shade!

BTW, the broken windows are unexplainable mess and I didn't do much to improve it. But know that windows never ever get broken the way they are on your bg. Especially the one with some weird hole in center (2nd floor, rightmost). Most realistic one is at the top floor, in the center.

Also, never use black font on dark background! It's unreadable and unpractical. The people who make signs never make such mistake.

Now, take few spare hours and go through WHOLE critics longe to see how people studied and what were their mistakes. That way, you'll learn much more than just posting every try you make and repeat same mistakes people have done for ages.

My best wishes to you and good luck!

General Discussion / Re: NES or SNES?
Fri 17/06/2005 22:54:33
NES/Famicom. All the way NES, and not SNES.
Why?

Technõs Nekketsu games.
That's why.

...OMG!!!
*panically searches for the CD with NESticle and 1000+ roms

Both Famicom and roms are very cheap now, I saw brand new famicom console at the store for a $5 last week. Games are priced about as much, though they're getting quite rare.
Then again, maybe a decent 486DX/66 and sh*tload of old DOS games would be as cool - if not cooler buy...

Good work!

For the first pic,

* Ray-traced shadows feel a bit... unrealistic. Even if they are realistic.

Their edges look too clean. Try either "fuzzing" the edges a bit in paint program or if you can do it in your modelling software, it'll be even better.

* Police stations are usually a bit more than just a building with a sign "police".
Try adding a little plague with some (doesn't have to be readable) text next to door. Like "Los Angeles 116th Police department" or something. Like real police stations are.

* There's no such thing as 100% white light. Add a tiny bit of yellow to all lights. But only veeery little bit...  :)

* While the streetlight looks good, the enourmous post looks a waste of material compared to little light attached to it. Why not add more lanterns and some ornaments to it? For example, something like that...

* Some bump mapping would do wonders to the otherwise repetitive and boring wall/sidewalk texture. If you're using 3ds max, it'll be super easy to do. Not sure about other programs...  :-\

About second image:

* This is where the shadows are REALLY needed. Where are they?

The difference between M$Pain(t) and and PSP is HUGE!
You can't make so big step in little time, so switch to something a bit easier, yet more powerful.

There's much simpler programs available.

* ArtGem - as I suggest everywhere - similar to MSPaint on steroids
* The GIMP - Like Artgem on steroids
* Project Dogwaffle - Adobe Photoshop minus steroids
etc...

There's a sticky topic in this forum, about paint programs. Weird that you missed it  ???
Find your own.

Not bad!

I'd point out some areas in need of more interest:

* right ear (somewhat weird  :-\)
* overall shading color. The pic should look much better if shading was stronger (more contrasty)
* right eye. It seems a bit too small, the face isn't angled that much
* Usage of line tool! Try using more curves and less straight lines. Especially when doing hair...

The title name looks excellent. But blue letters on background give a headache of smaller sort.

If you need a host for your game, you may upload it into my serverspace, which I especially made for AGSers.

I'd like to see games less than 50MB since I don't have very much space to spare, but if it's really a masterpiece, I won't mind bigger ones.

It's fast, reliable and no ads or crap to let you down.

I won't host homepages, though, so find some other webspace for a page, and simply link the game to mine.

Under the following link, you'll find an uploader to get the game directly from your hard disk to server space.

http://www.increator.pri.ee/ags/

I'd like to see only games in proper .exe (self-extracting), .zip or .rar format, and I'm moderating the space myself, so please don't upload any unpacked games or other pointless crap.
#2231
Okay, after lottsa trying, studying other scripts and stuff, I've managed to finish my uploader. (It's very n00b yet, but works)

http://www.increator.pri.ee/ags/

You're welcome!
Now, how could I make this available to needers?

Is there a way to check if a game is saved into a slot?

I want my game to auto-save in (not selectable) slot when user quits and the game can be played on from "continue" selection from main menu. But I want "continue" option to be disabled when game is not played at all yet. How to check it?
#2233
Even more important is...

Well, imagine yourself an upstart game maker. You hear good words about AGS, and come to page to check out what's going on.

Instead of the magnificent AGS classics, which did lead most of us to AGS and gave imagination lots of new depths, the NewBie/potential-new-superproductive-AGSer just sees a page with missing screenshots and dead links...  :-[

Mentioned "6 Day Assassin" was(and IS) one of these superb examples. In this case, it shows clearly how much atmosphere and excitment can be packed into a game with only 2 rooms and 1.5  ;) characters...

What a loss.
Also, many games are very outdated since AGS has updated all the time. Problem is especially big with very old games, compiled for DOS and so on.  This gives me an idea... a "cleaning day" of some sort. Like declaring a month for it and calling all AGS Veterans to overlook their previous hits, updating/recompiling and correcting links, if needed. This way we could get many old pearls back.
#2234
For either info and downloads, just contact the authors of the games! They're AGSers, after all...

Want 6-day-assassin? Simply PM to MrColossal and ask where and how could you play the game.

Aside from that, I actually have sometimes urge to make similar threads aswell...
Some (many) authors of "deadlinked" games are still very active at the forums. Why don't you care about your creations enough to keep at least links alive?
#2235
The usage of double brackets(right word?) was just unneccessary.

character[who].AddInventory(thing)

is enough.

AGS Games in Production / Re: Rapstar 1.5
Mon 13/06/2005 07:32:07
I think that such game would be

* Interesting to see
* Quite boring to play after first 5 minutes

So, yeah. Make it and we play und rate it.

But--
I somehow find flaming specific music genre waaay more offensive, than - let's say - someone calling me a facist or something like that... And I'm - as most Estonians are - with "fat skin" (very very rarely offended by anything)!
Also, I don't give a crap neither about rap or rock*. I have no side here.

Leave the tastes alone, people... No, wait... shut the fuck up.

*2 rap songs, 3 rock songs against 720 trance/house songs in my playlist :D

Well, for $2 a month I have 1GB free webspace and a domain name with .pri.ee ending. 100Mbit connection, and works fine.
No ads, no lag, no problems.
I really don't need that much...

Now, seeing many unlucky AGSers using insane crap like freewebs and geocities, etc, I thought that if anyone needs a host for a game, I could happily host it. Hm... Let's say - as long as its size doesn't exceed 50MB (unless there's a good reason for it ;) ).

You may always make homepage to game wherever, but downloading should be reliable and fast. This is where I think I can help...

Only problem is how to upload it?
I'm restricted to only 1 FTP client, so I can't make extra user to domain.

Also, I couldn't find any free & working PHP scripts to make such upload page as 2dadventure has... and I'm way too lousy when it comes to php/MySQL coding to make one myself.

So if anyone could give a hand with uploading script, I could spare some space.

If anyone needs it, after all.

Code: ags
else if (value == 38) { //  Percy Gives her shit
     character[EGO].AddInventory((iDress);
     character[EGO].AddInventory((iJumpsuit);

Look closely...

There may be more mistakes like this aswell. The code is way too long to spend a night on it :D

I usually get eof errors when using wrong brackets, like this--

DisplaySpeech(EGO,"well done"];

So keep an eye for such things too.
