Critics' Lounge / Re: Subway critizism

Wheee!

This is REALLY weird style. It's so detailed and clear, and I like it.
But it's also soo-o unrealistic while being not cartoony at all.

I won't buy this "can't do tracks" thing. You're a good artist.

What you should do, is add more colors. Right now I only see black, purple and green in 99% of the pic.

Also, if it isn't a subway in some distant future where dirty people  are replaced with superclean robots, you should add some dirt, trash, broken wall panels, scratches, graffiti and other stuff like that.  I don't believe that so clean and new subway even exists in our world.

I think he means antialiasing in paint program, so sprite comes along with semi-transparent antialiasing, without need for AGS to AA.

Yes, it should be possible. Change your game palette to 32-bit colors and it should work.

right?

Eh, actually resyntesizing human voice is really big waste of lifetime.

This is why people invented alternate ways to do it:

Couple of beers and ask some friends - guys/chicks to come over.
When they're there, just give em' hell until they learn to act properly.

Then use microphone.
#2384
Well, If i needed such thing, I'd surely use Fruityloops for all the voice modifications.
A bit tricky, yes.
But options are endless.

Just load .wav speech into sampler channel and kick it around with all these VST plugins and modifiers.

Of course, Goldwave is teh r0xx0r too.

1. I second MrColossal about admiring anims
2. The start: I mean, when you just decide to start - this new game idea that burns your brains and motivation is sooo-ooo high....

...Well, it cools off soonÃ,  :P
3. The moment where you just released the game and got first (positive) feedback, like a "whoaÃ,  :o :o :o"-style answer in a forum thread or a friend finishing it and looking at you with amazed face... "You really did it?"

Game making rules!

If you start making a game, you're brave.
If you are making a game, you're cool.
If you finish making a game, you're god.

Yes. How wonderful, just as I modified the tv I thought, "hey, it looks more like a microwave".

People recoginize the things on your picture -- therefore you can draw, hehe...

Well, to make it less microwave-like, just do what HillBilly suggested, plus:

* it wasn't so microwave-like on your pic, but didn't look so TV-ey neither
* it was alot more microwave on my edit, but there's also more possible to call this a TV

So find a halfway on those two pics: I suggest just making the light-spots on opposite diagonal corners on the tv and not all around, as I did.

General Discussion / Re: Telephone Madness
Wed 09/03/2005 22:06:40
Right. The telephone.

At my full-time job, one of my assignments is to pick up the phone and hold it until person at the other side of line finally reaches the conclusion that it was a very, very stupid idea to call here, and not where they actually supposed to call with their problem.

The sales department!
I work as a scales operator/accountant/data entry.
They always call and ask some crap that I have no idea about and don't have to - since it's not my profession and I should be alot higher in career ladder to know that.

Like logistics, currency exchange rates, and all kind of corporate crap I don't either know or have to know about. All I can do is tell them where they really have to call (though they know it perfectly by themselves) and hear swearing and whining about "why don't you never know anything? what kind of fools work there?" and so on.
They are too lazy to move their own butts, so the telephone gets it all the time.

Well, I have invented some tricks to keep some phone-peace at the sales department...

1) A matrix printer!

They call, I promise to find the person in charge so it can solve their stupid problems. Then just put the phone onto this 1000 years old Epson FX-890 matrix printer. Andkeep on typing and printing the bills. the door to sales dept. is made of glass and 20 meters away from me. It's quite cool to watch the sales agent jump up from the chair and tear the headset-phone off her/his head along with some hair. This keeps them off the phone for a while. :D

2) Misunderstanding/ear problems

Me: "Yes?"
Agent: "Hey, go see if this truck driver arrived at the other side of the warehouse"
Me: "what?"
Agent: "I said, go see if-"
Me: "WHAT?"
Agent: "THE DRIVER! GO SEE--"
Me: "WHO? DRIVE WHERE?"
Agent: -click-

This works too.

Stuh, you house picture looks very similar to something I've seen already... hmm... I recall snowy version of this house....

?
#2389
Hm. A super fast and lousy edit...

A little brightening here and there can change a lot.
Notice the shelves...

Well, I didn't do it very carefully, but it's just for show.

Ooh!  :o

If I could do such things with oil or watercolors - like this "originally handmade" scene was, I wouldn't never-ever bother to reduce colors or anything else.

I'd just make a kickass game with kickass graphics and high resolution. We have done some progress in technology to make this possible, right?

Yea, that's what I would do.
#2391
Adventure game? Nope.

But who else has created a new map for Duke Nukem 3D in his dream while sleeping? And more complex map that I could ever make, though I have some skills at this.

Oh hell, it was so clear. Just as I would've really used Build level editor.

I remember waking up and looking at the walls in my room. And wondering how could Duke have such a texture for walls, before realizing that I'm in reality now.

Em, this happened, when I was away from computer for 2 weeks.

Well, women sometimes act sick in such situations, yes.

For example, my own neighbors:
The Man is a ruined gambler, though he earns quite a lot, they still live like bums. Every month, when it's payday, the same scene appears: Man comes home, happy and brings gifts. And a bottle of some alcohol. Then, the whole family parties for this evening.  A bottle is not enough, so the Son (from Woman's first marriage) is sent to bring more booze. Soon, everybody gets drunk, and Man gets furious. Now, chapter two starts. First, Man starts calling the Woman a bitch and accusing her in "ruining his life". Then, the Woman sneaks out and knocks at our door. With same text every month "if you hear screaming, call the police".
This happens usually at 3 o'clock in the night, which sucks aswell, since we have a baby in the house who wakes up and starts crying.

Now, she goes back and fighting accelerates, soon, the Man decides that he has a shitty wife and decides to "sink his misery" at local casino. So he starts asking for money, from the Woman. That's because he always gives money to Woman after getting paid, so he couldn't waste it. A sick gambler, as I noted.
Woman, of course, refuses, which adds oil to the fire. Soon, the woman gets beaten up and runs out. Or comes to our place.
Sooner or later, the Man decides to continue relieving his stress, this time on a Son, (which is Woman's son and not his) so Son is soon kicked out from door.

Now, the Woman calls police, fearing that Son will be killed by furious husband.
Police arrives shortly. Since there's many home-fights at where I live, police won't and can't do anything. Well, the Man gets extra angered because of the police and usually attacks either policemen, the Son or wife (in front of them!). Then police, of course stops peace talks and handcuffs man. And now there's the part which I don't understand -- the Woman starts to defend the Man like a lion its puppies. He once bit a local constable, because it twisted Man's arm to get it handcuffed.
Yes, with these TOO fresh bruises, she still tries to stop police.

huh. Same drama, every month.

I wish I had normal neighbors.

But for my previous advice... well, If you'd see the guy abusing your sister physically in front of your eyes, you won't be asking what to do.
#2394
Been there, seen that.

Just ask her husband to come over for a tea.... and prepare a baseball bat.
No matter what your sister thinks or says, It's men thing.

Ooh, it's a really nice bg you have there!
Now, the main problem relies in colors and lines. Both are sooo blending and unclear that whole thing looks just pale.

1. Use stronger contrast! for example, keep one side of shelves as it is, but other side - ALOT darker brown.

2. Play with palette! The walls definetly need stronger and cleaner colors. Maybe a wallpaper with some pattern on it.

3. Eliminate all cases of bad antialiasing, like where floor meets walls and some other places too.

4. The plant looks extremely pathetic, in this quite modern room. It definetly needs more leaves, maybe more height aswell.

Maybe I'll make an edit later.

Whoee! This part of BJ series finally "pressed ALL of my buttons"...

* aaaaaanimations! Excellent. There was about enough of them. Despite some unpolished walking here and there, you really risked and made many very difficult animations.
* No! to boring, long dialogues! The thing i didn't like so much about previous BJ games were long and uninteresting dialogues, but this time, all the essential information is talked and handful of offtopic text too, without too much babbling. I love this!
* Music! Best I have heard for a long time, in an AGS game.
* Puzzles... I just finished it without any need of walkthrough, though it wasn't too easy after all. Well, some things were expectable, every time I ran out of ideas what to do next, I just somehow *knew* that walking out a door will make someone standing in a hallway, which - triggers a cutscene with new leads. This kept game progress so fluid and non-frustrating.

Overall, superb job.  :D

To give a suggestion too... as always, try to keep an eye on bad antialiasing cases in BG graphics and pay a little more attention to perspective, for example, the painting in "travel room" was waaay off...

Critics' Lounge / Re: Pixel People! Yay!

Rii-ii1i-iight...

Well, A look at this car tells me that you most likely drawed it onto a resized photo. Well,  it's nice and fits well with characters! But first...

* fix the rims
* fix that mess at the back of the car, like this wandering shiny blue pixel and weird shading
* the side windows are indeed a mess, but instead of making windshield the same, just make side ones more transparent
* the mirror needs a microscopic rescale - it just feels too big, even if it was same size on a photo (er... if you used a photo, that is), also other side needs a mirror too, there should be a little of it visible
* the gray outline on orange light is bad. recolor this area with darker orange color.

#2398
There was THAT MUCH games released last year?  ???
Aw crap. Gotta start playing...

* German, Italian, etc games -- most of them are not played by majority of voters, so there's not a fair competition
#2399
I like it! :D

I'd still go for some kind of projectile, just a cooler one.
Something like this...

#2400
* too bright(saturated) skin palette, almost orange
* too heavy beard shading, there's not much places/occasions in the world where light can shade so little thing from black to bright white, especially in this way
* left eyebrow looks a bit weird

But apart from that, extremely lifelike. I love it!
