Yes, better indeed. Maybe you could do another tiny improvement? Make text color pure white when mouse is over button!

Critics' Lounge / Some music for C&C
Wed 19/05/2004 05:04:09
First, listen to this:
http://www.hot.ee/increatorgamez/thoughts.ogg

What I want to know is - would something like this fit into an adventure game? I like to use strong bass and d'n'b-ey snares all the time, but most of adventure games have these quiet and atmospheric MIDI background tracks and I'm afraid my track is too... aggressive or something.
Should I decrease tempo, make beat softer and take out bass or not?Ã,  :-\
What else could I add there?

C&C is welcome. Thanks.

Whoa, it worked! Installed nvidia driver version 53.03 over current 53.72 and directx got its wheels rolling! Some other problems did stop too. Ahh, relief.

General Discussion / Need desperately help!

My problem is following:
I can't play anything that uses DirectDraw in fullscreen! This means > whenever I start an AGS game, it loads, starts to play music and everything but screen... remains black. Totally deeply RGB (0,0,0) kind of black.

Yet, games run fine windowed. And DirectDraw test performs fine.

This is total mystery, because this just happened and everything worked yesterday. It has happened few times in last month and I still have no idea how did I get over it. Last time, I reinstalled DX9.0 and video drivers and It started to work again, but not today.

I still haven't figured out what causes this. Last time this happened after I played Half-Life. Once, I alt-x'ed out from AGS game before first room loaded and then it happened again.

I have shitty 16MB NVidia RIVA TNT 2 card. The type of card that works worse every time I upgrade drivers. Kill those guys at NVidia! And this universal-but-stupid suggestion "get latest drivers"! I also have DirectX 9.0. Windows XP professional.

This time, Direct3D tests FAIL too.

Desktop runs at 800x600 32-bit. Weird thing is that after few days using my cpu, edges of screen start to stretch strangely, so clock font is horisontally weirdly stretched and start menu button too. When I set desktop to 16-bit for a moment, It like resets and everything looks normal in 32-bit mode again.

Where could problem be? How do I get this fixed?

Only problem with this GUI is that it's hard to read. Maybe try changing color or color different buttons with different colors so eyes can catch them by different color groups? Text is very little too.

There's actually naothing to C&C, because it's nonexisting lifeform, so it could look excactly as you want to and it's still right. And it looks good, too.
Maybe try to color hands same color as the body is?

I'm not very comfortable with so wacky style, but even if perspective errors go with style, some things are still too weird, like chair where it meets floor.
And this barrel-y thing has perspective TOO messed up. It has height up to half of a wall so there's absolutely no chance to see it's top.
You should redraw (from scratch!) the man's arms, who's sitting at the desk.
What I DO like about this bg is really nice colors and the fact that everything is so... um... clear and simple? This emptyness isn't really bad.
Ah, and get rid of this thin antialiased line below the wall next to door.

Yes, I've noticed decreasing number of posts too. There was 254 posts in "guess who" thread, then 257, and then 255 again. Strange...  :-\

Remembered one of my favourite ones, though it's very silly one:

Man dies. Goes to heaven and meets God. Well, man starts to make a deal with God, wants to live further and get back among mortals. God decides to test his will. He turns man into a spider and puts him onto roof of 100-story skyscraper. When man/spider is able to get to the ground level using his string, he will be sent back to world of living people. Well, man/spider attaches his string to a roof and starts to move downwards. He reaches to 50th floor and feels that he's running out of string. He presses, presses... Reaches 30th floor. String is dangerously low. He presses further, presses... With big effort, he manages to reach tenth floor. He's almost out of string... but he keeps pressing, and so he presses, presses... Suddenly his wife wakes man up and yells: "What the fuck are you doing? You have shitted all over the bed...!"

Too difficult! I realized that I have never tried nightmare before. Made to level 6. Didn't save/load game. Then died. It's monster respawn that spoils the thing. Apart from that, doom2 can make a nice "stealth FPS" when using harder difficulty.

Hmm.

Man walks into public toilet. Sits down, grabs a newspaper.
Suddenly hears:
"Hello, how's it going?"
Man looks suspiciously around, looks into pot under him, then answers:
"Oh, I'm fine."
Voice asks further:
"Where are you? What are you doing?"
Man replies:
"Oh, in a toilet, taking a dump."

Voice says: "Carla, I'll call you later. I'm in a public toilet and some pervert in next booth answers all my questions to you."

Another one:
Man buys brand new Mercedes. Drives around, but hits a nail on a road. Well, pulls over and starts to repair the tire. Another man approaches and asks what is he doing.
"Are you blind? I'm taking the wheel off!"
Other man breaks the glass and says:
"Fine! I'll take the stereo then!"

Heh, It looks like that whatever we do, there's always some way to turn this forum into kindergarten. I'd suggest more strict moderation in General Discussion forum, this is where chaos starts. And treat all members equally, I know it should be this way, but it really doesn't seem so. Some Legge gets flamed hardcore for overposting, but some oldschool members do same all the time and nobody makes big deal.

How disappointing! Title says porn quest and no porn seen on title screen!  >:(
Actually, first and last ones are the best. No matter which you choose.

Locking own thread isn't bad idea.

Pretty! How about making opposite walls a bit darker? especially the one where window is.
#2777
* Looks nice so far. But you gotta decide either you go for photo-textures or just color. Because super-detailed carpet doesn't fit to plain-colored floor at all. Or floor doesn't go with carpet. Same about walls. Is there a photo under your bg?
* Post PNG's instead of JPG's, so there will be no blur on them.
* Bed's legs, where they meet floor, are way out of shape. Make ends rounder.
* Ceiling and wall intersection makes me think that ceiling is made of something soft. Mud perhaps? Make ceiling line straight, instead of this freehand mess you have there right now.
* Make all outlines only 1-pixel wide, or even better, remove them at all.
* There's something definetly wrong with bookshelf.
* use width/height with img tag to show your sprite in double size

Well, you have still some work to do. Overall, this is very good bg for first attempt. I like especially these warm colors you're using. Good work!
#2778
Um, It's not bad...! But this is how you could improve:
1) Start making all bright tones darker
2) repeat step 1 that until your eyes don't hurt anymore
3) Try adding color two and three to things. Single-colored bg looks alot worse than bg with every thing drawn at least 2-3 colors on it. I other words, shade.
4) make outlines on bush at the left-bottom side darker and give variety to colors of leaves, like make some brighter and some darker
5) Little shadows would add alot to this scene.
6) Listen to Petteri

Yes, Minimi, be careful. My opinion is that Christian themed games suck! Messages aren't very good, then again, In Gabriel Knight there was a church and guy prayed there and I felt like this was excactly right and did fit in well. Like, religion was used to give better atmosphere to a game, and it was not the case where game was used to 'spread the word'.

So there's two sides on this. Just don't try to pull player to one of them. Uh, I hope you can understand at least something about what I just said.
