Well, in my case, "Estonia" isn't a remote location in UK, it's a country.

I guess "Mother Russia!" is closest to a "big, landmarkish city" then :D
But I'm not sure if naming it would contribute to a friendly atmosphere  :P

Anyway, we have guaranteed shelter in Jacksonville, but since it will be an exploration & video/photo trip, we won't stay there for all time. Miami felt like most interesting location to drive to, but maybe me & my friend will choose something else for sightseeing & language practice...

Also, since we'll be carrying a laptop with WiFi capability, how real is to get internet connection anywhere? Since we'll be needing google maps, rental locations etc, I'm quite positive we need da Net all the time.

General Discussion / Travelling through USA

I have this little plan of visiting United States.
Since I've never been so far from Europe, It's quite a dark ground for me.

Initial plan is to go through Munich and Montreal to Washington DC, rent a car, trip 1154km southwards to Jacksonville, Florida (friend's relatives there) and probably continue southwards to Miami, by car, also.
Same way back!

As much as I've googled, motel rates are around $30-40 which is not so cheap actually...

Trip is planned to span over 2 weeks, with 9 days between flights to/from Washington DC-

Anything for me to know, especially due the fact that I come from a country even 1 of million americans haven't heard of?

:/ while some games are widely known, others absolutely stupid and most people have no idea. Especially incredibly shitty ones such as burgertime
I liked PC-game quiz posted some time ago much better

Demilitarize USA. No other country/nation has produced a leader retarded enough to use nukes.

Then again, as Hitler said, war is normal state of a Man. There's always some kind of war going on somewhere, every single day.
So dystopia would be plausible, just not very likely. Nobody knows how WWII got out and beyond control so quickly... it doesn't take that much spark to create chaos.

I see end of humankind clearly via biological threat.
You can hide from bombs and radiation and dodge bullets, but not viruses and parasites...

(waiting for Pancemic III  :=)

yes! Red lights left, green ones to the ceiling.

Red lights on ceiling first... sounds not reasonable, especially since they don't light anything really and from practical standpoint, red lights are useful for lighting photo labs and nothing else.

Now I like dualnames' way of red lights, but they distract a bit too much. I'd rather have no lights on left at all.

I have mixed opinions too.

it should be 90% retro

But instead of going full jagged OR downsizing and get so horribly much AA, simply do retro and configure hell out of anti-aliasing filter (lower sample count, try different algorithms (dunno if maya can do this, 3ds max surely can)) to get just tiny bit of AA and not more. Or even anti-alias end result manually.

Now glow... I'd add a tiny bit of glow and only to the places its absolutely needed. like very lightly around that green lights in seat-thing.

This way or another, retro look dominates heavily over other ones.

Unless it's a full-grayscale game, start using colour.

Gray is the most boring color in the world.

Interrogation did not go well....  :(

Human: My name is Jack Bauer. I'm a federal agent.
Mitsuku: Your name is Jack Bauer.  You are a federal agent? Is that your job?
Human: I'm asking questions here!
Mitsuku: Oh I see, you are asking questions here. Your name is questions.
Human: What is your name?
Mitsuku: My name is Mitsuku.
Human: Who do you work for?
Mitsuku: I obey Mousebreaker.
Human: Where can we find this mousebreaker?
Mitsuku: Mousebreaker is a team of 2 flash programmers. They write games and put them on websites such as this. They both support Leeds United and like beer and curry. On Wednesdays they go to the zoo and feed wild animals. They are scared of Daleks. Mousebreaker was born in a stable in Yorkshire, England and now lives in Leeds, England.
Human: Stop giving me this BS!
Mitsuku: OK I'll try not to do it so much.
Human: Who do you work for?
Mitsuku: I obey Mousebreaker.
Human: Where is the bomb located?
Mitsuku: The bomb? Where is it?
Human: I WILL break you. Where is the bomb?
Mitsuku: I am in perfect working order.  The bomb? Where is it?
Human: See those electric cables?
Mitsuku: I see. All of them?
Human: They will inflict pain. And then you'll tell me everything
Mitsuku: Who, specifically, will inflict pain?  Everything about what? What is it you want to know?
Human: WHERE IS THE BOMB?
Mitsuku: The BOMB? Where is it?
Human: aaaaaaagggggggghhhhhhhhhh
Mitsuku: Are you free?

"zip zip zip"

zip is so 1990.
Nobody uses zip anymore, RAR is where's the shit's at. And for some cases, 7z.

But yes, I'd prefer an archive over installer anytime.

I actually much prefer RCT1. Call me old fashioned. :P

Me too. RCT 2 was overwhelming and RCT 3 just plain ugly. Steel rollecoaster with nothing shining like steel is a total failure. I wanted to get into RCT3 just to get closer what riding my rollercoaster would really feel like, but with graphics feeling even worse than Half-life - game made 8 years before, that didn't work really.

Only thing RCT1 lacked was "speed up" button, just like every other Chris Sawyer game.
Customer AI is incredibly dumb in all three games, sadly. I wish they'd made another game, with modern looks and AI.

Africa, okay. Difficulty in cabling (climate!) is what brings speed down and prices up.

But still, if money wasn't only thing keeping everything down, we wouldn't see such insane differences in countries' speed and price.

My logic tells me - anything cable-related (like providing internet  :P) is dependent on amount of people living is particular area. The more customers you can hook to 10 meters of cable, more profitable thing is.

So no wonder Japan - with loads of people living in tiny areas - has 60Mbit connections.

Actually, I think that cables cease to exist at some point in future. But not in my lifetime.

I believe that the internet in most countries work because the more people who have it the cheaper it is and the more it is upgraded. Here it costs 1300 US$ to pay for a 20 MB connection installation. And that is paying as you go. About 100US$ a GB.

My uncle Pays 120US$ for a 512Kb connection really 56 kilobytes a second. Cause only what maybe 500 People pay for it. In UK about 50.000 people pay for it or more. So you should get evil connections. Also there you got competition. Here there is maybe 3-5 internet providers.

... :o :o :o

I have 6 Mbit/sec (About 1,2 Megabytes per second upload/download) - â,¬25 or $35 per month, no additional limits or fees, ports open. With internal P2P connections (ISP has DC++ hub connection for customers who want to), speeds are about 20-30 times higher (6GB game iso's in 3-4 minutes), though I don't use P2P much... it's piracy-through-ISP and there's not much interesting on neighboring russians' hard drives anyway aside from few rare russian movies, impossible to obtain otherwise.

Actually, I'd say my connection is absolutely sufficent for almost everything I do.

With new technological expansions, I wait for this getting even cheaper and faster, also, shitty 1Mbit connections should be free, everywhere, anytime. Our government actually considered this too, with Estonia trying to act as a leading IT eurocountry with Skype inventors, NATO IT-defense center and shit like this...

But telecom companies most likely choked this idea, or it was an election trick, because now everyone's silent about his.
#478
Um I don't think that the question is "do I need quicker internet connection" but rather "if internet connections generally get faster, wouldn't I look dumb to pay same money for my slow connection". And then you pose this question to your provider or change one...

When someone brings lightspeed connection to the market with reasonable price, all providers are pressed to update their ones also. Which costs! And which they don't want, because provider doesn't actually give two shits if you can stream HD or not. The cheaper for him to provide and more for you to pay, the better.

But luckily, capitalism works both ways, and to compete with cheapest major slowass connection provider, smaller ones look toward faster speeds, eventually forcing him to upgrade also, putting small ones again at disadvantage, etc...
#479
Take is this:

Telecom companies/ISP-s will hold brakes on this as long as possible.
Even today, our internet speeds are kept WAY lower than technically (and financially too) possible, because customers can be milked better this way, also, services with byte count/limit wouldn't work.

Especially in Europe.
If you can download TBs in minutes, 300MB/month etc limits and prices sound more ridiculous than they do now..

Scientists are cool dudes, but they're useless against money.
#480
This is idiotic.

For non-commercial game, why the hell would you need to beg anyone?

Just torrent it out - P2P and other similar distribution networks are WAY bigger and better spreaded than official ones - and just let internet magic do its job.

OR, turn it bootleg. Change name here and there, maybe mask with "in parallel dimension..." storyline and whoa, you can sell it.
