General Discussion / Re: Skepticism
Thu 20/11/2008 15:33:49
The main problem with religious debates on internet going to stick quickly is because many do not realize that it is internet.

To stay normal, one should make a clear difference between stating a fact/call to arms and expressing personal opinion... and realize how (un)important that statement or opinion really is. This is where those threads fail. And usually, it starts from a believer who is obsessed with an idea that his almighty God, whatever its name is, really needs a protection from this particular moron in an internet forum.

For example, my personal opinion is that religion - any kind - in our time - IS kinda stupid, and people who go around hating and trying to change the non-believers are total idiots.
However, if religion helps one to be a better person or find confidence in life, I find it really positive and instead of stupid, a clever psychological choice to enforce yourself doing something good and ensure willpower all the time do keep on doing it. Religion is a free choice, after all. If you chose to believe, you had a reason for it.

So I find stupid stuff not about religion itself really, but people who practice religion. If they're stupid, there's nothing to do unless you play same game and try to change THEM in exchange. Ok, maybe religion too. God in a form of burning bush? Come on...

Now surely, some of you agree, some of you call me ignorant, and so on. Isn't that the whole point?

That's why I see no problems with religious debate threads. It's a free world.
And problems/hate are natural part of those threads, till mentioned group of believing people does exist and participate in those threads. I choose to ignore it.

No.

Considering your comments on anything else here aside capitalism, I do imagine you so...  ;D
You forgot monocle from the list! And a top hat.

To be more specific, you're looking for this:

I provided image, because I have this strange feeling that people are talking about different things here.
It's a two-digit display. Coded number shows what the failure/current step on booting is or if startup succeeded.

Most often used name is "Diagnostic LED" (helps to google for error codes!).
Three motherboards I've had (Asus, nForce and Intel) over last 5 years, all had one of those.
#885
If you get SOS in morse code (beeping) when starting up, repair shop straight away.

Do you have motherboard manual still intact? Do you have motherboard error LED?

Somewhere on last pages, manual describes startup error codes and led shows the codes.
If you have no manual, I guess you could acquire it in digital form, from your motherboard manufacturer's website.

Since your motherboard isn't from previous century, I assume you might have the error LED. It's located somewhere on your motherboard, mine is quite big, easy to notice. Not all mobos have the LED, though.

If it's the case, decoding error code might give you some insights about problem.

The old - pull-BIOS-battery-out trick should work too for strange BIOS problems.

You capitalism-embracing people really scare me. Not a single bit of free thinking? Is it hundred years of american brainwash or simply greed?

I've got an idea for you!
Right now, we have worker class doing the dirty work. Despite their productivity, they still want a wage.
Even those asians in shoe factories and so on.

Why not cut some money from there? We could go to third world country, stick em' all onto a ship and bring home. To work for free. As slaves? No wage for worker, more ice cream for everyone!

Now wouldn't it be swell? Wait... this is like déja vu...

I called capitalism a voluntary slavery in other thread. Now why should it be voluntary?

QuoteThis is the best condemnation of communism as I have ever heard or could have thought of myself.  If communism is unable to serve the needs and wants of humanity or inspire it to progress and prosper then WTF good is it?

So, people pulled triple shifts at work during Five Year Plan out of will to NOT prosper or progress?
Every kid wanted to be a cosmonaut, every worker wanted to be the best in his factory/whatever, every factory competed with every other simply out of boredom?

Socialist competition to improve Union, the big idea was simply a joke? US launched smear'n'fear campaigns on daily basis just because USSR was NOT growing a bigger economic and military threat day-by-day at all and simply needed that last push into hell?

Space Race, Arms race, it was only one sided where Soviet Union (the PEOPLE of USSR) had really no wish or motivation to become the greatest?

"Oh yeah, let's get this Sputnik built so our leader would shut up already?"

....
you are crazy people. If anything, the ACTUAL wish to be even better, progress even more is what tore union apart. They really shouldn't have embargoed american cars and japanese TV's. Or foreign travel.

The communist worker, after reaching the limits of being best in his work, realized, that in western countries, he could profit much more from his skills and experience. And live much more luxurious life. This is when they started to look West.

...which exactly is why I would see powerful dictator/monarch as best option.

Both USA and Russia actually somewhat reaches that kind of system. While people/government/senate/whoever have their say and can blabber and protest till hell freezes over, ye olde' Bush / Putin simply gave bombers a green light. It might be not nice from a simple citizen viewpoint, but in terms of a power of a nation and country, everything's held together, mostly.

Huh, I lean towards nationalism, ain't I? Well, my country is being sold piece-by-piece to highest bidder, it comes from there.

Nacho, you have very black-and-white view on communist era. Are you sure you know what you're talking about? People under soviet rule were not as unhappy as you might think. The system was actually great in most parts. What made it fragile was
* lack of luxuries and free market - everyone wants to have coolest car and tv - having exactly same as neighbor isn't interesting and maked you look West.
* nationalism and immigration - russians everywhere, moscow as the general ruler, the word "socialist republic" actually meaning "russian province"
* the method Stalin tried to build communism: hardcore brainwashing, fear and isolation.

- Brainwashing meant heavy marxist learning in school, russian language in schools, too much Lenin-praying, a cult (read: The Party)
- Fear I described earlier. If you were unhappy with system and let people see it, you were in BIG trouble
- isolation meant no "capitalist" countries for you to visit, no foreign tv channels, japanese tv or american car

If communism was built onto something different and actually gave people a choice between capitalism and communism, while eliminating three previous methods of holding, it might have grown into something workable and I'm sure many people would actually CHOOSE it over capitalism. Because in the start, people DID choose it, during great October Revolution.

HUGE amount of Russians think of Soviet era as the best days even today. They loved it! It's rest of Europe who didn't like occupying at all.

But free choice is not how Marx and Engels imagined it.

Somebody should re-write socialism basics to fit into modern world and it might just work.

There's no end to amount of state policing your idea would need.

To have it flawlessly working, it would require hordes of officials/policing agencies checking backgrounds of wannabe-leader school directors, public service tax rates (so monopolist businessmen would not rip off nation). And of course all this nazi system about citizenship and all this bureaucracy/hair tearing discussions enacting laws would need...
We had such a system. Not same, but close. Communist socialism. It worked on fear... of dark torture cells in local KGB house and a neighbor, who would give you up to nearest party member if you had some criticism talk about government while sipping beer together.

Defensive military? Defensive armies get bombed usually, at least, in modern world... I can imagine building tall drones sitting in a city while artillery reduces it to dust. Sorry, our programmers didn't include routines for offense...

Yeah, I live in democratic republic. Our parliament IS your demarchy. All they do is pass laws to goverment. A soap factory owner proposes low import taxes on soap, a russian spy suggests lower budget on defense, etc etc.

It's a damn corrupted mess where "hand washes a hand". So soap tax laws actually go through, especially when deciding minister gets his share of soap profit as "an anonymous support to his party campaign" or simply something to overseas bank account for retirement days. "No direct power" doesn't mean "no remote power". I don't see how your system could escape corruption here.

Quote3) The Constitutional Council
Is your everday CIA, NSA, KGB, FSB... but without less power? One bad sheep here and whole system becomes corrupt.

While system might be nice on paper, people are not...
It's progressive though. Somewhat utopic.

....
Well, my own view is that people are generally stupid, corrupt and easily influenced.
This needs a powerful leader with as little of sub-leaders and bureaucracy as possible.
Absolute monarchy seemed to be most efficient. Not sure how it would work in modern world, though.

QuoteIf I had one device that was a phone, mp3 player, gaming system and camera in one, that does sound pretty funky, but I'd have to charge it up every bloody day, wouldn't I? And then the battery won't last very long. So I think I'll stick to having seperate devices! Plus if I lose it, I've lost them all!

Huh?

http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/products/mobilephones/overview/w580i?cc=us&lc=en

Whatever I do, even play for half of day and listen to music other half, it still survives 3-4 days without recharging.
Not exaggerating here. Battery life was first priority when choosing the product. Since I usually don't play that much, only a charge a week is usual.

Nintendo DSi costs what? $300? My phone did $400, brand new.

Not seeing point here.... but of course, Java games are not DS games.
Then again, who plays handheld games much anyway? Bus rides aren't that long and if you have more time to play than only on those boring transportation events, why not use computer or console? They are almost everywhere today?

I second everything Misj' said.

And point out that I don't like this "girl" at all. Not your art, it's fine, but the girl in general: Long sweater, those footwear, pants and really unattractive feministjugend face, sorry, no.

In a game, I would imagine her as extremely annoying and mean person. The kind that bitches all day about men being pigs and people pointless idiots overall.

When drawing women, pay attention to manga "rules": Big eyes, long eyelashes, less nose and mouth that goes with the packet. It makes drawn women cute. Simply stay to human proportions.
Your girl has everything opposite: tiny, evil/bored-to-death eyes, an enormous nose and mouth that doesn't add anything to the rest.

Oh, thanks for links!

Gimp = Photoshop. Commented & explained in first post.

Pro motion has that exact iso & 1 pixel grid combo I like!
Unfortunately, pre-set palette system kind of... sucks. It's different from anything I've used after 256-color era.

I will think about using this. It's my candidate #1.

Pixelstudio has really cool Iso-geometry tools. But grid settings suck and it has that "hello-world"-app oversimplified feel overall. And it contained a nice thing AVG antivirus named as "logger". Don't know if it's really harmful, but AVG blocked it and program ran fine.

Strong second in my list. I would love to see those two combined. I love grid and I love tools. But I seriously don't want to miss either one - or use two programs for one image. Kind of bad situation here.

I still had only a brief overview so I guess those programs have much more underneath.

---
I'm gonna try to learn those programs more and maybe try isotopia too (though it seemed like not a painting program).
For anyone still wondering what I'm looking for, check out those links by yourself. And why MSPaint-using for iso-drawing is such a pointless chore with tools like this.
--

But if anyone else has anything to suggest, shoot!

Eh, I recall many noob threads with same title.
Sadly, couldn't find any.

Anyway, I have an idea that requires large amount or low-resolution isometric graphics.
There's 2 ways to go: Either MSpaint till I'm bald, or find something better...

Does anyone know something better? Iso-oriented, maybe?
And still pixel-art. Not those strange things like World Creator 1.5 (which I failed to get to start and which was best Google had to offer)

I remember building editor for SimCity2000 which was specially designed for isometric drawing. It had some weird tools and automatic isometric cropping and whatnot.

http://news.softpedia.com/images/extra/GAMES/large/simcity2000pc_003-large.jpg

Anything else like this in the depths of internet?

And please, don't say Photoshop. Unless you're a pro, making pixels in Photoshop is like sharpening a pencil with a pneumatic drill.

It's like heavily retarded version of human being... a monster!

So now heavily retarded people are monsters?

Damnit, I did not say that!!! There's no equal-sign here. Nor a comma.
Monkeys look like monsters. And they resemble retarded human beings. I seriously didn't put equal-sign here even in my head.
But even though you misunderstood, you misunderstood in hostile manner, so screw you anyway.

I like that.
And I have no problems with that.
This is true.

Look at the picture you posted, what to like here?
I wouldn't want to touch or get anywhere near this creature.
It's like heavily retarded version of human being... a monster!

I wonder if apes have ever been used in horror movie - they would do a perfect job.

QuoteI'm rather surprised by some of the negativity in this thread, honestly.  I think humanity as a whole needs to reassess its place in this world if we want to continue.  Many scholars have already established that our trend for demanding surpluses instead of just what we need (this applies to birth rate as well) is going to exhaust our resources in the foreseeable future.

I realize that his post is rather preachy and that there are no easy answers, but is that any reason to dismiss him or his points entirely?  I think this is an actual cause for concern, as are many others with regards to how we treat the environment.

Em. Nobody's really against his cause. Or better, safer world. And I guess most people care (except me, I hate monkeys). But the petition here, it's based on idea that starting a passive cell here, would ultimately change whole world.

It's the idea that generates negativity: it really doesn't work. 10- or even 1000 AGSers boycotting palm oil won't give even an extra month to orangutans. Yet, choosing your products because of some ingredient for rest of your life will be a chore. Chore that won't do any good really. Many posts reflect same thought here.

And how dramatically robvalue reacts to this, eliminates even last tiny bits of reason in this thread.

To really make a change, robvalue has several WORKING options...
* bring the "light" to the owners and pushers of palm oil industry, make em' see!
* kill them. And anyone after them.
* learn hard, become scientist, invent synthetical palm oil, make it cheaper to produce
* start a seriously-taken fight group against palm oil usage. Something that's in real media, not a small internet community

QuoteI also hate capitalism!!! Grrrrrr! Greedy way of ruling the World! Americans! Brits! Spanish, Germans... Ain' t you tired of this misery style of life you have?!? Let' s move, we have an alternative!!!

We do not have an alternative.
That's the sad part.

Socialism, communism, self-providing-economy, stone age, nothing really works better than capitalism. Atleast not when you like computers, tv, central heating and all the wonders or modern era.
That's why we have capitalism.

But who says it's good? It less shitty option of shit options. Or to be more specific, more good things for more bad things. During soviet era, hunger was rarely a problem, education was totally free, and to survive (basic things like food, shelter) all you had to do was minor effort. Today, getting thrown to street, losing your job, etc is totally more possible, risks are everywhere, safety for future is daily problem. Then again, some of us can benefit from it much easier.

But I still hate it.

All I suggest is third color.

Make it strong neon orange or magneta.
And make all article/thing titles and similar things in that color.
Would look cool, I think.

QuoteI am saddened by what I read. I can only hope the other people who read this and who haven't posted will go away and actually think about this. I won't be returning to this thread.

You're probably missing human element here.

Look. I deny palm oil. Maybe don't eat some of my favourite foods so far, have pain in the heart  for those monkeys, in general, live worse than now. For orangutans.

Same time, a heartless and greedy capitalist in his plantation eats orangutans for breakfast and lives much, much better. He doesn't give a shit.

Why should I do it for him? So he could be even less worried? Have clear conscience? "Not my problem, we have treehuggers for this"
It's his job to figure out how to justify his deeds and reduce damage. Not mine.

We all have 80-something years. In the end, he's lived well and prospered, I've been miserable and worried.
His kids inherit factories and plantations. They will kill orangutans this way or another.

Only outcome is my life being a bit worse. Only. Do I need it? Do orangutans need it?
My point is, fighting the results is pointless and has no far-reaching effect. Especially when problem is somewhere else.

God, I hate capitalism. The voluntary slavery of 21th century. That's my reason to take no more BS from it than absolutely necessary to not be expelled from human race. But I still remain rebellious. Palm Oil ban is not reason strong enough to lower living standards. It simply isn't.
#900
I choose to remain ignorant.

Not using any oils except vegetable oil, though.

I don't see much point in this thread neither.
Why did I post at all? To remind robvalue that there will be people who won't give a damn and treat this as pseudo-problem of someone who has too much free time. I could adopt a puppy who would be put to sleep otherwise or give all my payment to save a sick baby. Like, immediate action. But doing so remote and effectless things as taking half-hour to read every bottle at the store, no.

You cannot change 6 billion people, or fight against heavy advertisement systems. It's pointless.
If people are scum, the ones that you need to change are richest of those scum, owners of factories.

Can you take them down?
Or are you wasting simply time?

But as I said in the first sentence...
