If someone has beautiful artwork in their game, people are going to want to download it, because the effort put into the game is in plain sight and it looks more professional as a whole.
To add to your point. Having beautiful artwork doesn't necessarily mean that the game is going to be good. I mean if you could make a game with Mozart's greatest hits playing in the background, but that doesn't always mean you will have everything else in the game of that standard. Although a game with Salvador Dalí's artwork, Mike Otfield's music and an Egar Allan Poe story then you have a game on your hands.
It's all down to judgement and personal opinion at the end of the day. If you are willing to play to find hidden gems(which are subjective to the player's needs) then it's your win, if you don't and only play games that have been given a Pimp overdose then, fair choice. Although personally I like to play with coal to find a diamond. Even if that diamond isn't perfect I still have fun at the end of the day.

I think Progz masturbates over Pro Motion... Well I use GraphicsGale if that is any help for your list of sprite designers' software.

Oh you wanted talented people.... ignore this post then  ;)

Critics' Lounge / Re: Background- Some advice?

Thanks for your comments guys! And for the link Ali!

So I've decided to redo the background in more of the road runner kind of style:

Kind of rough, but on the right track?

Critics' Lounge / Background- Some advice?
Tue 01/12/2009 12:31:43
So recently I entered BG Blitz and since I don't make many backgrounds I thought I would see if I can gather advice from the wise and wonderful ags community on my entry.

Here is a list of things I have done:
1) Sketched and scanned in my background.
2) Used photoshop to colour my background.
3) Used "effects" such as transparency and gradients for shading.
4) Resized the background and added detail with GraphicsGale.

Is there any YAYs or NAYs in my system? Is there anything you think is dead fugly and I should change?
What I was thinking when I was making this was the Roadrunner landscapes and backgrounds.

Coloured and shading:

Shrunk and added detail:

Any advice would be really grateful. Hopefully I'll force myself to do a few more of these.

Congrats Nihilyst! And well done everyone! Including you Mr 304.

Ok...
I don't understand why people are kicking up a fuss about not drawing the usual "white guy" character. Secondly, I don't understand why in a competition you would get more "points" for drawing another race than Caucasian.
Not to sound like a moderator but:
Have your little race row somewhere else. Post your entries that fit the rules and the best sprite wins. Done.

On topic:
I might put something together for this one.

The top secret, secret weapon testing of the evil villain The Dandelionͭͫâ,,¢'s top secret location of secret weapon testing was unfortunately right next to the top secret Evil Villain Hideout Manufacturer and Architects Corpâ,,¢'s headquarters.

Who'd of thunk'd it?!

That was fun. I had a little trouble getting the crowbar but I enjoyed myself.

I didn't have a clue what the stuff was in Bulbapuck's game so I think I'll vote for Bicilotti's frustrating game.
