Er... no, you don't have to take it...
What does Larry say if you try the vent shaft now?

General Discussion / Re: D&D on the forums

D&D Roleplaying is not unlike playing adventure games. In a situation like this, you are most likely to look at your surroundings, be sceptical with the small sack, talk/interact with other players...
Eventually we will come across monsters which we fight (and maybe steal their equipment afterwards) and thus we'll gain experience.

I might as well demonstrate...
>I look for traps around the sack

If none are found (NOTE: The game master might throw a dice to determine whether I find the (potentially) hidden trap or not! That does not mean that there is no trap!),

>I open the sack to take a look inside and being a dwarf grab everything that looks valuable...
>I ask Goél who he is and what we are doing in that freaking cottage...

Btw. I'm quite a frequent role-player, although I haven't too much experience with D&D...

Angelos, no offense taken and sorry for my harsh answer. I guess I just didn't make myself too clear in the first post.
As for the historical component in my game, you may be disappointed, for I am going in a somewhat fanstasy direction. So I try to make things 'fit' into my style rather than stick to a certain age. You may encounter elements that are from the middle ages right next to some renaissance style elements or even things that come completely from my imagination...
Nevertheless I'm grateful for historical style advice in any way. Things that are 'right' always look better...

jaz, it's indeed a mixture of romanesque and gothic style and I think I have seen this in some early gothic churches, where the builders were just adapting a new style but not yet daring to give up their bunker-style walls...
The windows on the tower sides are supposed to be just small openeings to let the sound of the church bells out.

But now, on closer look, I think that I will change the tower top and the clock face. That's indeed too baroque, you're right...
Also, I guess we can call the cross-question settled, I'll take the first one.

And for the more interested (andhistorically inclined), some info about the town: It will be rather smallish but wealthy, maybe 30-40 houses (mostly half timbered), has small walls around and lies directly next to a river which is spanned by a bridge made from crude stones. What do you think about the walls? would a town of that size have stone walls, a palisade or no fortification at all?

I'll update as soon as I've changed the church, so thanks so far to all of you!

P.S: Maybe I'll also show an image of my work-in-progress town later...

@ Angelos: I lived in Regensburg for almost all my life, and there is a real medieval cathedral there (like the one in Cologne, but smaller, and yes, I was even at the Cologne cathedral's tower top), among other smaller churches (which are even older, but by no means what you would call a cathedral).
Not every medieval town had a cathedral (only the bigger ones had) and the town I'm talking about is not very big.
I worked half a year as guide in a museum about medieval history.
Churches not unlike that have been built as early as 1300, so I guess we can call that a genuine medieval church.
About entering through the tower: http://www.twainweb.de/klapp4a97/dorfkirche.jpeg
About the cross on tower-top: http://www.fewo-heumann.de/die%20Bilder/Dorf-Kirche.JPG
And I think it's better to spend more time answering my real question about the crosses than to dig up semi-correct historical stuff   >:(

@ others:
The church is supposed to look somewhat rural bavarian and I have no strong interest in historical correctness, since I'm making a rather fantasy kind of game.
As for church clocks with hands, those may have been around as early as 1400...

Hi,

Finally started some graphic work again!
Right now I'm working on a 3D scene of a small medieval town and I've just done the town church:

now I have two questions:
1) what should the cross on top look like?
a)
b)
2) would you think it sensible to script a clock with RawDraw that shows the actual time?

funny thing, GMX also has a gig and I've not yet reached the size limit of sendable mails (certainly above 7megs), you can send every file format you like...
It's free also, I can create my own folders, messages aren't deleted automatically, so why the hell is everyone so fucking crazy about GMail?!?!

Yeah, reactor sometimes does behave quite weird. C4D also has a (non-free) dynamics module, which is even worse.
But try to work with a high amount of simulation steps, a low amount of polygons (e.g. if you do subdivision modelling, use a coarse stage of the person model as rigid body to simulate with).
Also you'll have to fiddle with the parameters like stiffness, elasticity and gravity (if one of them ist too high/low, the scene explodes).
And, to my experience, what pays off most in this case: Simulate as little as possible! If you have a coat, for example, "nail" the upper parts of the coat to the body and let only the hem simulate.
That's what I do when I try to make "realistic" clothes. But still I'm frustrated quite often...
Maybe you're better off to animate it by hand  :P

Maybe use volumetric lighting instead of the fog? Also, for my taste, the separation between land and sky is too sheer. Some sad trees in the background would help IMO...

Long hair and beard. That's the only true thing. (Of course only if your hair isn't too sparse or curly and your beard isn't too thin)
I haven't seen a barber in years and I'm glad that this is so. Really saves money and trouble and makes you look like a troll...

Ah, yes... from mine sweeper to mines weeper in just a few seconds... amazing, isn't it?
I myself never find enough patience for that...

Whoa, thanks for your replies, guys!

I think, when I have finished the BG I'm working on right now (yes, I started work again), I'll put a thread into the Games in Production board, show you all what I'm doing and I'll hope to see you guys there to tell me what you think!

If you're still guessing about "it's me", dasjoe already got me. Sorry for announcing his success in German, though...
I thought the beer (-> alcohol) would give me away, instead of my "portable friend"...
The (allegedly) most photographed building is castle Neuschwanstein, wich is south of Munich...

dasjoe, richtig! ;D

Thanks for your encouraging words, Dave...
I think my main problem is that I like to try out new things and experiment with them, but I never get anything really done unless someone (at uni or at work most of the times) tells me to...
That's why I think that I might really profit from some kind of team partner.
Also, about the smaller project to go first: My game-idea is knight-themed and there will be a tournament at the end. I thought of making the tournament semi-standalone (I have in fact made some kind of working demo already), but still I'm stuck right in the middle of it...
Ah, well... You know what I mean, I think ;)

Hi!

About a year ago, I started using AGS and began making a game. I did some (~10) backgrounds and (~5) characters, developed a storyline, thought of some puzzles, did some scripting experiments... but with time passing I worked less and less frequently on the game and it has now come more or less to a standstill.
I do still want to complete it, but I haven't really had the nerve to work hours on a 3D Background or debug a faulty script.
At the moment I feel that I cannot complete a project like that all on my own...
I have no direct idea how (and if...) a partner could help, but I think that having help of other people would put me back into the mood again...

Maybe I just need someone to give me some advice how to organize and manage my work, and maybe ask me about my progress some time or another...

Unfortunately none of my RL friends is willing or interested to help me with that...

If you seriously think you could help me, please post and I will show you some pieces of my work to give a clearer impression.

Thanks in advance!
